LIONS’ PICK 1 HINT

THE race for Pick 1 of the 2017 national draft has been wide open all season — and it’s likely to remain open until draft night.

But a late-season form surge from a top-five prospect has piqued the interest of the Brisbane Lions, who currently hold the first pick in November’s national draft.

Dandenong Stingrays big-bodied midfielder Luke Davies-Uniacke has emerged as a live chance to be taken by the Lions at Pick 1.

The initial mail out of Brisbane was that it favoured Western Jets forward-midfielder Cameron Rayner, who surged into Pick 1 favouritism after booting a carnival-high 12 goals for Vic Metro during a dominant national championships campaign for Vic Metro.

But it’s understood that the Lions have also warmed to the idea of using their first draft selection on Davies-Uniacke, who produced an outstanding finals campaign with the Stingrays.

Foxfooty.com.au can also reveal that Lions coach Chris Fagan recently met with Davies-Uniacke, however it’s not uncommon for senior coaches to meet with potential top picks a few months out from the draft.

The Lions’ curiosity intensified after witnessing Davies-Uniacke first-hand when he took on the Geelong Falcons at Simonds Stadium, booting one goal from 22 disposals and six tackles. That performance came a week after his 33-disposal best-on-ground effort against the Eastern Ranges in an elimination final.

The 18-year-old, who has grown up in Rye, would also suit the Lions’ young ‘country boy’ culture that they are trying to develop at the Gabba, with players such as Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry, Alex Witherden and Sam Skinner all joining the Lions from country towns in recent seasons.

It’s been a stunning turnaround by Davies-Uniacke, who had dropped down some draft boards in July after a subpar national carnival for Vic Country.

Davies-Uniacke is a bullocking midfielder in the (Swan) Josh Kennedy mould, whose core strength allows him to feed the ball out of congested situations, while he also has great explosiveness on the outside. He also possesses a long right-foot kick.

As well as Davies-Uniacke and Rayner, Bendigo Pioneers midfielder Paddy Dow is also in the Pick 1 mix, primarily thanks to a massive TAC Cup game against Gippsland that saw him boot 2.2 from 35 disposals and 21 contested possessions.

so we get Luke Davies-Uniacke in 2019 trade period for a second rounder?

I wouldn't be against Noah Balta with our 2nd. Still very raw, but his athleticism is absolutely incredible for a tall. Could be a long-term Waitey replacement as a mobile CHF.

Interesting. I'd love Garner at 21. Sounds like exactly the player we need, a smooth mover with toe, skills and composure.
Has been pretty consistent this year but hasn't had the best year. Many people thought he would transition in the midfield this year but it hasn't really happened. Still been influential across half back and half forward. Still think he will go top 15, there aren't many elite kicks like him in this draft.

I think one of the pacy HBF's will be one of the first on our list at our second; someone like Ling, Richards etc

Either that or one of the bull big name mids that aren't being favoured quite first round. midfielders like Worpel, Bonar, or a solid flanker like Garner etc.

If O'Brien or Clark are there after the end of the first round, we will take them.

I now want Red Richards with our second pick.

Who's Red Richards?

McMahon would bite the mic off if Clark lasted.

Paddy Dow at #4 :thumbsu::thumbsu:
Not stressing about pick four anymore. Worst case scenario as I see it is 1. LDU. 2. Dow 3. Rayner and we get Stephenson who could be the best of the lot still. We're getting a gun whichever way you cut it. It's as good as pick 1 this year I reckon.

Ok time to step up again Pykie Hunters Host #3 roos_fanatic08 (edit) and especially the expert in all things under 18 athletic boys Groin guru .

Give us your favourite 3-5+ players you'd like to see arrive at Arden Street via the November draft.

I still think Adam Cerra should be our guy if we have the option. He’s just what we need and has not been near full fitness all year and has still performed well.

Agree. With LDU, Dow, Rayner, and Cerra all looking like solid midfield picks, and Stephenson as the higher risk-reward option, we are well placed. That's when it just becomes a lottery as to which of them becomes a star. Happy with pick 4, and wouldn't want to give up 21 either, as there will be some quality there too by the look of things.
