2017 Draft - Pick 30

Dylan Clarke's ball use wasn't horrific either. Mid 60's is par for an inside mid

DE isn't the be all and end all, he has a strange kicking technique, very high ball drop, can't seem to kick low flat passes and gets very little penatration and lacks creativity both by hand and foot.
The kid was the most prolific contested ball winner of his draft class and was one of the last selections, very similar to Cassidy Parish this year.

I'd like Coleman-Jones just so I can have a ruck in my mock under 25yo Carlton team.

At the moment you have to take big mac out of full forward to ruck
I really want a young, developing ruck, and like Coleman-Jones, however there are a
couple of midfield types I would prefer here. Mature Tim Kelly is my wish if he can get
past the WC midfield second rounders. 2nd choice L. Fogarty if he slides that far. A couple
of other options and then CCJ in the mix.
Want a Scott Jones type at 73 or later.

We may have 3 mature ruckmen, but Phillips is injury prone, like the bloke/player, but
recurring soft tissue injuries could find him out. Needs at least a dominant year in the
2's to stay around.

I know the modern way is to buy a ruck, but surely more chance of "good'un" if you
develop your own.

Watching Petruccelle closely in the U18 all stars replay and can see both sides of the argument. Has huge upside, will become an atheltic beast, built like a shorter early Fyfe but lacks the game sense and polish at times.

There's a heap to work with but his draft range is pretty broad and pick 30 is still a big-ish investment.

Zac Fisher was pick 27 and a much more consistent and refined player. Albeit, not as strong a draft but there's most likely going to be some handy players available.

Not out of the realms of possibility someone like L Fogarty slides.

I don’t mind picking up a ruck at 30 but I would prefer De Koning over Coleman-Jones. I would only take a ruck if L.Fogarty, Daniels and Petruccelle are gone.

I’m really hoping Allen slides to 30 (it won’t happen but I can hope)

Hate to disappoint you, but after having watched Petruccelle live half a dozen times this year he's got Boekhorst MKII written all over him. Would like to think that Carlton Football Club has learned from that experience.

We don't need one but if we want one the rookie draft is the best place for a young ruck. There will be some very good players at 30. Another running player with good ball skills would be great

The players I like at pick 30 in order are
Allen(it would be a massive slide)
L.Fogarty
Petruccelle
Daniels
De Koning

I don’t think a young ruck is high on our need but I think De Koning would be a good pick up and replacement for Casboult as he is a forward/ruck. Unlike Casboult he is a beautiful kick (left foot) and has a lot of X factor. Would make a dangerous combo with McKay and free up Curnow to play in the midfield.

Depending on what we do with the earlier picks (Rayner/Constable), Zac Bailey is one I'd be pretty happy to get. Go watch the last Allies game where they beat Vic Metro, he was outstanding.

Arr0w TheSmokingGun have you seen much of him this year?? The U18 champs were'nt really kind to anyone except Rayner in terms of consistent performance

Others I like at this spot - Stoddard, Ross, McPherson, Moore...really confident we could land a good one here.

Then we can spend 70's/R1 on Roughsedge and Scott Jones

Overall - Rayner (fwd/mid) Constable (utility) Bailey (in & out mid), Roughsedge (mid) Jones (Ruck)....job done SOS :p
Sorry mate didn't see this due to the incorrect tag.

Think Pick 30 is much easier to find suitable options than Pick 10 tbh. Just a few thoughts:
  1. Zac Bailey - Good acceleration out of tight places, runs both ways and can hit the ball at speed. Disposal by foot can be iffy at times and the only other question I'd have is does he find enough of the footy??? Does have excellent awareness around him in traffic though.
  2. Jackson Ross - Medium Forward/Outside Mid who appeared from mid season at Eastern Ranges. Not sure that he finds enough of the ball when playing as an outside mid and I'd argue he probably does his best work as a 3rd Tall inside F50. For a scrawny kid his sticky fingers make him a tricky aerial matchup and he makes his opportunities in front of goal count. We've been strongly linked to Ross although I question our need for more 3rd Talls atm.
  3. Nathan Murphy - Some might be surprised to see me have him out here, but I've seen him listed as going anywhere from Picks 7-27. Not sure he's done enough to be a 1st Round Pick, let alone Top 10, despite the promise he's shown for mine. Has a powerful, if often errant, right foot and Kenny Hunter like arms. Despite the hype, I think come draft night, saner heads will prevail and the mid 2nd Round is where he'll get picked up.
  4. James Worpel - While I agree with TerryWallet that he's very much a meat & potatoes player, there are plenty in this area that don't even make it as bubble & squeak or bangers & mash. One of the very few midfielders in this draft who works as hard off the ball as on it. Really hasn't kicked on this year and will probably relish the fresh challenge that an elite AFL environment will provide. My biggest criticism of Worpel is that he isn't always as team focussed as he could be, but he has demonstrated that he's strong and durable. Seems to be very little middle ground with Worpel you either love him or hate him. One thing I can tell you is that wherever he lands Worpel will be in the running to start Round 1.
  5. Andrew McPherson - Hampered by a couple of soft tissue injuries at inopportune times, which means his 2017 was like SPS's 2016. Whenever he has gotten on the park though he's been terrific. He's bloody fast, disciplined, runs both ways, can be used from inside mid to HBF, at 186cm he's a nice size, his ball use by hand and foot is exceptional and always finds plenty of it and is team oriented. If you like Williamson then this kid's just as good if not better. I think he's arguably the best player around this mark, but that's JMO.
  6. Jake Patmore - Game has gone up a notch since the U18 Carnival and snaffled the ball almost 50 times in one match. Has a good team ethos and works very hard, but can burn the ball by foot. I'd be surprised if WC don't take him and local clearance machine, Braydon Ainsworth
  7. Ryley Stoddart - Sound one-on-one defender who picks out the best option with his disposals. Can also be used up on a wing, but I'd query as to whether he finds enough of the ball for that role. Stoddart is another prospect that's been heavily linked to us.
  8. Lochie O'Brien - Outside mid with a booming left foot. Like Garner, O'Brien hasn't had the year he would've wanted which has seen him drift in the rankings. Spent the second half of the year working on the contested side of his game which should see him eventually become a more rounded player. Would be very tempting if he drifted out this far.
  9. Dylan Moore - Struggle with taking yet another sub 180cm midfielder, especially one without speed. Everything else about him is pretty good, but there are others who I prefer here.
I still find it pretty hard to go past McPherson here. Except for a couple of soft tissue injuries we'd be talking about him as a late 1st Round Pick. There's certainly more than one credible option here and a number of them wouldn't be out of place if SOS selected them.

That’s an excellent post my friend, excellent. McPherson seems like a great option here and can build on his body as he develops as there’s no huge expectations. I also like Worpel if he lands here. I think he has the skills we need as a workhorse which releases others. The two of them would be great gets at 30. Not sure O’Brien or Murphy will drift past 15-25, but you never know. There’s often a couple of speculative picks early.

Does this late growth spurt remind anyone else of Cripps?

Pro-tip.

Don't go from watching a Lochie O'Brien and Hunter Clark video highlights back to back and then watch Ballard.

Makes his shaky disposal look truly atrocious.

A lot of wobbly kicks, missed handballs and wayward balls.

Moves well in traffic, stands his ground, good frame to build on.

Better options at 30 for mine.

Could you have a midfield that is too tall? I think the focus should be on explosive players like Judd, GAJ, Dangefield (they grow on trees i know) but we need someone that can burst away from the packs and break open the game with raw speed.

These are the results from the combine, i dont know what smart speed is but I assume these are the guys that are quickest in the draft. How many of these will be available at 30, Petruccelle seems to have slid a fair bit since being highly rated early in the year.

Smartspeed 20-metre sprint
Jack Petruccelle - 2.87 seconds
Kane Farrell - 2.90
Aiden Bonar - 2.90
Ben Miller - 2.91
Nick Coffield - 2.91
Ben Paton - 2.95
Brent Daniels - 2.95
Stefan Okunbar - 2.95
Jaidyn Stephenson - 2.95
Nicholas Shipley - 2.97

Smartspeed agility test
Kane Farrell - 8.10 seconds
Ben Miller - 8.10
Brent Daniels - 8.11
Trent Mynott - 8.20
Nathan Kreuger - 8.21
Aaron Naughton - 8.22
Mitchell Podhajski - 8.26
Oscar Allen - 8.27
Stefan Okunbar - 8.29
Matthew Ling - 8.30
Callan England - 8.30
Aiden Bonar - 8.30
Andrew Brayshaw - 8.30
