Sam McClure on SEN this morning said that he's got it on good authority the Lions will take Rayner, the Dockers will take LDU, and Carlton will take Dow.

Hearing it on SEN probably doesn't count as a rumour though. Best I've got.

As you write it's probably not a rumour, And while Rayner is a gamble at 1 I liked his tackling in his highlights and what seemed to be a competive streak, the best ones have a big competitive streak Voss, Hodge etc. It's that competitive streak that mitigates the risk some what in my opinion as he'll break himself trying to improve his tank to get into the 22.

Agreed. Except for the team that holds pick 1. Our next two picks are late first rounders, so it's not like who we draft at pick one has much bearing on who will be available at 15 or 18.

The top 5 picks, Rayner, LDU, Dow, Cerra & Brayshaw, should be generally locked in some order. Unless say Cerra is a genuine flight risk for Fremantle and is the player left at pick 5, so instead Fremantle go for Darcy Fogarty, seeing Cerra drop to Collingwood at 6 or the Saints at 7. Then the draft will reset around pick 12. While Brisbane sit there with crossed fingers and legs, hoping Sydney don't draft Lachlan Fogarty at pick 14, and then ponder the flight risk of drafting Ed Richards.

You only have to look at Twomeys final mock draft over the last few years and their isn’t much he gets wrong. More connections than anyone else around. I think Anderson’s could be a bit off this year. Quite a few picks in his I don’t think will go the way he has them

Saw an SEN article with the following snippet:

The Lions coach said the club interviewed 30 young players at the draft combine and said years of honing the process believes he’s adept at sniffing out those with a reluctance to travel outside their home state.

“You pick up players who have a really strong preference to stay in Victoria and that makes you think twice,” he said.

Not always going to get it right but i think ultimately clubs will pick up whether a player is being genuine or not or at least keep getting better at it.

Lets hope they are getting better at it, lets also hope they understand that the speed and agility profile of the Lions squad must improve.
Last year it was obvious they had to many in the 22 who didn't have the speed or agility to succeed at AFL level.
The recruiters are to blame and are under pressure to improve in my opinion.

If he's there at 10 and we don't select him I'd be hugely disappointed. IIRC he ran a 6:20~ 2km. That tells me he has the ability to train and play at the next level.

Think he goes to the Saints at 8 along with Coffield. They'll have a good draft this year.

Over all Rayners TAC cup and PEGS season didn't live up to his U18 Championships games. And in the champs, he played in far and away the best team, with a dominant defence and midfield feeding him.

No disputing he has some good highlights.

You want players who will break themselves trying to improve, look at Andrew Brayshaw and Jack Higgins. They may not have the same ceiling as Rayner though.

Fo me, Rayner is the ultimate boom or bust type player. If the Lions draft Rayner, doG I hope he proves me wrong.

With our poor recent history of first round draft choices, taking a boom or bust player like Rayner with our first No. 1 pick for ages would make for a very nerve-wracking few years for Lions supporters. The fingernail chewers amongst us are going to be ****ed.

Not in a position to spend endless hours as recruiter do analysising draft crop and can only go on highlights I've seen however Rayner might be worth the gamble if he gives the impression he isn't a attention seeker that wants the attention that the big Vic clubs offer.

I'm pretty sure I read on here (maybe this thread) that there are concerns his heart medication may impact him in a less than ideal way; drowsiness or something. Regardless I'd love him at the Lions, If he got to 18 surely we'd be willing to have a crack, would have to be too good to pass up.
