I said this earlier this year, and often it's true, but after watching a few championship games it's legitimately the underagers that standout.
Agreed and if it was an open draft, I dare say more underagers would be top 10 than those eligible this year.

Every BF draft watcher who go to games and talk to the scouts keep saying the same thing. The scouts keep saying next years draft is looking very strong and many of the underagers would go top 10 in this years draft.

Haven't we had this every year where next year's draft is always looking better than this year's? There's always a few super draft comparisons as well.

Surely the system really shouldn't vary that much year to year.

Could it also be this years draft looking a bit shallow is making next year look overhyped

Our academy kids get overrated every year. Started back with Conway and Tickner and just kept happening.

It's one bad aspect of the academy where I think maybe so much is invested in these kids and so much put on having to have home-grown talent that they can get taken without really being deserving. Allison is a current example.

Not sure about that, Allison has been going pretty well in the 2's. He may not have had the best of draft years but he is showing enough to be on the list.
Unfortunately not everyone makes it, simple fact of life as a footy player.
If the club don't think he or others are good enough to remain on the list then they will be filtered out. As with every other list in the Afl.

I disagree what you have said about Allison. He cost us pick 72 when he was bid on in the 50's. He's shown something to be worth drafting. Whether he makes it is up to him, his work ethic and ability to add to his game.

One reason all Academy kids drift a bit is they don't get to play TAC Cup finals. Invariably there's a bunch of Vic kids who elevate their profile performing during finals. From Dale Thomas to Clayton Oliver, there's a long list of bolters. For every bolter, everyone else goes back a position.

Inevitably that's kids that are injured and Academy kids.

There are a few rep 'show games' during the AFL finals that a Ballenden might get a shot in, but TAC form carries a lot of weight towards the end of the year.

It's not a bad thing either. We wouldn't have Witherden or Skinner if early year rankings held.

I don't think that's true. We've let plenty of Academy kids thru to the keeper. Corey Wagner and Declan Watson all got bid on and we said no thanks.

If it comes down to a total line ball, I suspect we'd take the guy we have the most data on. Probably the local kid. That's just smart.

But we picked an injured Sam Skinner on a knee reco rather than draft a known quality in Wagner - who'd been in our academy for about 5 years and desperately wanted to play for us - because we thought Skinner was a better risk/reward.

And talking to the Vic recruiting guys last year, they were certainly not super complimentary of Allison at the time. I have little doubt they'd have baulked at an earlier bid on Allison.

Why is Ballenden named in the backs?, shame about Payne, would like to see how he went
Who cares why, as long as he plays there and someone kicks 10 on him ... then watch him tumble out of the first round ;)

Ballenden played in defense doesn't worry me. I still see him as a ruck/forward but the defensive abilities when up forward haven't been all that crash hot from what I've seen. All fine when he's predominantly the big marking target but if he's going to slot into our line-up he sure as hell needs to be able to offer tackling and defensive pressure otherwise playing him alongside the Hippy-Schache combo might not work, even if Hipwood is able to offer huge second efforts and speed. Good learning exercise (that also potentially reduces bids on the open market)

Because l would like to see Ballenden actually do something worthwhile. Been talked up but hasn't really done anything. Don't really want to spend a 1st ronder or even a 2nd rounder on a ruck. Plus these are games where he should be developing heaps with kids his own age.

Wasn't involved in the conversation. Just saw it while reading tweets in regards to the weekend team announcements.

So Brett Andersen is listing 6 underagers that he would have in this years top 10.

This has been a common narrative since early in the season when they played the combined AFL Academy game.

S.A. won their first two games on the back of their underagers.

Lukosius absolutely towelled up Jarrod Brander in the first half of last weekends game, and Brander is rated a top 5 prospect and best KPD prospect in this years draft.

How many times this year has McStay been named in the forwards but played as back?

Lions and Allies tried playing Ballenden back early in the year, and it didn't work. Good chance Ballenden plays up forward and through the ruck and Brander plays back.

Looks like we have picked a bad year (2018) to surge up the ladder briz.

At least even if we do surge it seems like the KP are too good to pass. For a team that is set on KPs as we are we can just sit back and wait for the best Rankine, I mean mid.

Its a waste of time forming opinions on the quality until a. The Nationals, and b. the Tac cup,...15 to 20 kids "suddenly " emerged over this period last year.

Unfortunately tonight's win to the Hawks makes it very, very difficult to see us not taking the spoon. Hopefully over the next few weeks and/or TAC a genuine number one emerges. Whether for us to take him or someone desperate to bring in offering us a good trade we need a bonafide indisputable number one.

It all depends on your definition of a waste of time Len, I really enjoy the speculation and discussion re drafting/trading etc. I don't consider it a waste of my time. Some might say BF is just one big wast of time, not me.
