No offence to Brisbane as a city, but I feel the big city vibes of Melbourne, food, culture, extra endorsement opportunities/ and playing in front of bigger crowds, more regularly, somewhat inhibit most go home factors. Dayne Beams is obviously the exception, due to family reasons. If we don't match a bid for Connor and he goes to a big Melbourne club like Collingwood... good luck getting him back to the lions!

Agreed. Great city, especially when you're young.

If I was an AFL player no matter what state I was from I'd want to be in Melbourne.

10 of the 18 clubs are here 5 times more jobs than any other AFL city. most of the AFL media is here, most of the AFL endorsements are here, most of the random 'promotion' activities are here.

And all of that is true post playing career as well. more clubs coach at, more players to manage, more media agencies to work for, more 'sportsmens nights' paying $1000 for an AFL player appearance.

Then throw in if it all fails you have the VFL to fall back to as a shop window or can get good money ($10-20k per year + "job" + car/housing) at probably 100 local footy clubs in Victoria.

and thats not mentioning the lifestyle.

Just ask Tayla Harris about all that.

Best game I've seen from Thompson (from the few I've seen).
Great Stats: 43 disp (38 Effective), 5 Tackles, 5 goals

Fair to say that his stats were inflated a little due to the lack of pressure applied by what was a poor opposition on the day (for the first three qtrs at least) and quite a few "give & gets" (24 H/B receives), but that aside, I thought he was close to, if not, BOG. Most would say Higgins (7 goals from 14 possessions). What I liked most was not the volume of possessions, but his in & under work and his disposal/set shot accuracy by foot.
I certainly marked him down as one to keep an eye on, especially in the finals where the pressure will be far greater (one would expect). He could be a good value late pick, in that contested Mid category that we need.

FWIW, it was interesting that the Commentators referred to him needing to develop his "gut running" ..... kind of reminds me of Oliver in his draft year (and not just that comment, but the way he went about it on Saturday).

Another who caught my eye (again) in that game was Ed Richards (Med Def) - super cool & very efficient down back (can't recall him missing with any disposals) ...... may not be a priority need for us, but someone else I will be "following" in the finals when the intensity will be up a notch.
yeah me too ed richards fast and good kick and has played a quarter on the ball in another match

Not in terms of blistering pace, but he definitely has some leg speed.
Not much really. It's the reason he won't go top five because he has pretty much everything else covered.

Having lived in both Melbourne is overrated as ****.

Brisbane is second only to Vancouver as far as my top cities go and I've been very fortunate to have seen a lot.

However if you enjoy the smell of your own farts then Melbourne is the place for you

Quality post.

Agree - quick footed .... and used it to great effect.

Yes, but what you get in a cosmopolitan city like ours is a better fart mix.

A lot of the above is for the Top 10% of players only, especially media, endorsements and promotional activities.

Yes, Melbourne is a unique and vibrant place to live and work, but you can't tell me that Voss, Black, Lappin, Brown, Leppa, Johnson, Akermanis, Power, Lynch, the Scott's have exactly struggled for exposure after football. Same will occur for the Top 10% of GWS players if / when they win premierships.

Just being a Melbourne based player wont mean they get luxury benefits thrown at them. Yes if you're Marc Murphy or Scott Pendlebury...but do you really think that a David Myers or Robbie Tarrant have or will be better off having played for a Melbourne club? I'm tipping no.

Izak Rankine currently playing the secondary school knockout final for Henley. Wearing number 50. They're hiding him but he kicked a great goal running from defensive 50 to forward 50 taking around 3 bounces.

Bailey is going to be a beast when he can throw his weight around at AFL level like he can at school level. Mitch Robinson level aggression on the footy.

Rankine might have cost Henley the game with a cheap shot and a 50 for mouthing off

Hahahahahaha. He did.

Wow

He's meant to be the hero of their school.

Tackled a bloke. Gave him a cheap shot which resulted in a free. Gave away a 50 for mouthing off and PAC kicked the winning goal in the last 20 seconds.

Jack Higgins is someone I'd love for us to draft. Would be a terrific clubman I reckon. The coaches would love him as they'd just know he is going to do absolutely everything he possibly can to succeed and get the best out of himself. He has leadership qualities as well and would fit in well with the new culture Fagan is trying to implement as a hard working kid probably similar in some ways to Jarrod Berry. Oh and he can play footy too:cool:

Agreed, would also help drive professionalism standards.
