Plenty of examples of KPF's drafted in the first round who sucked at AFL level. Just like any player its how you develop them. We can take the risk of drafting a Dixon/Kreuger/Miller/McCartin with a later pick now with a wiser, more selfless Jack who can develop players around him. Just take the best talent available, then draft for needs or pick a Collins or Close for backup until we can trade in a gun. No need to miss out on the Hannebery's and Fyfe's of the world for the Post's and Elton's because 'key forwards come from early picks'
Best available sounds nice but simply put it's a waste of time slecting KPFs from 25-30 onwards. If the whole league has passed on you as a KPF given how valuable they are it suggests they aren't that good. I think thise three would be good value at 17, 20 and 25. Gut tells me we're in for a curveball though.

The whole league passed on Graham 52 times......

Hopefully we end up taking all 3
#17 - Brander
#20 - Allen
#25 - Balta
#30 - Naish

If we got Brander and Balta at 17 and 20, I'd hope we look at a mid type at 25 if Naish gets past that pick. O'Brien, Peteruccelle, or Murphy type would be ideal.

Development is important but the best KPF are usually found in the top 20-25, we should be taking the risk this year with talls sliding and our position in the draft.

Don't forget Tyrone even though he was drafted as a Ruck

Midfielders are easier to find than KPFs and are valued more because they're harder to find. If you look at the strike rate for late KPFs it's very low. Reiwoldt x 2, Franklin, Daniher, Lynch, Kennedy, Roughead, Hogan etc all taken early. Exceptions like Hawkins, Dixon, Cameron and Walker were either zone or father sum picks.

This. I wouldn’t give a shit if we didn’t draft a tall as long as we drafted the best available talent. Don’t want to do a St Kilda and draft a Fatty McCartin ahead of a Christian Petracca.

Trade for needs.

Absolutely correct ^^.

We need to get a key position prospect at both ends from this draft.

Luckily they will be available.

Richmond is shrewd all of a sudden.
Brander and Balta would be a brilliant result.

Mcgovern may not be Rance but he's a superstar in his own right.

You'd spend a top 5 pick and be stoked to get him.
I wouldn't. We got Astbury at 35 and he actually plays on an opponent.

Lets see us much controversy I can stir up with my adjusted ideal scenario. :)

17. Sam Hayes 203cm 93kg Ruck/Forward
Our current ruck stocks are Nankervis supported by rookie upgraded Soldo and injury prone Hampson(missed most of year with back) and Griffiths(head knock away from end of career). Hayes is a dual AA in the U18s and while Bishop has expressed some concerns about his tank a couple of years development should fix that. As mentioned Hayes is a ruck forward, which would make him the perfect foil to play alongside Nankervis alternating between the 2 positions.

20. Noah Balta 194cm 92kg KPP
A swingman who can play either end of the ground and even pinch hit in the ruck if needed. Initially I'd develop him at CHB as the only real developing back we have is Garthwaite while Chol gets thrown back when he isn't impacting up forward.

25. Oscar Clavarino 195cm 86kg KPD
As mentioned above we don't really have much in the way of KPDs in development. Clavarino has been spoken about as being one of the better defenders in the draft. Has good closing speed and takes intercept marks.

29/30. Patrick Naish 180cm 69kg Winger/Flanker
Despite the media hype I now reckon that Naish could actually slide down to pick 30 given the requirements of the sides between 15 & 30. Brisbane Geelong North Suns Giants & Eagles all need bigger bodied midfielders or KPPs. Melbourne at 29 would mean a 16 point deficit heading into next year. If I read the draft rules correctly the points come off our first pick in the draft which would have zero impact in terms of where the pick would end up. In other words if we were to have pick 18 it would stay at 18.

So there we have it folks. Have I gone too far the other way? Have I over rated anyone or am I dreaming about getting some of these guys where I've picked them.

Nailed it :) ;)

Really warming to Hayes. It's been well documented he's a poor runner at this stage but I'd back our development guys to build his tank and get him fitter. Dual All-Australian ruck, can find the footy and go forward and kick goals. If Nank goes down we're screwed. Hayes and Nank together sets us up in the ruck department for the next 8-10 years

I’m leaning towards Brander over Balta. He looks like a natural forward. Brander and Allen. Balta might not work as a forward.
Brander and Allen sound like a song writing team from the 60s
Mad Tiger with his number 1 hit written by Brander and Allen

His ability to Play kpf is more important than his rucking prowess imo. I'd want to be convinced that he could make it as a forward before using our first rounder on him.
Not many 200cm plus kpf, Buddy, Dani her and Hipwood the exception but pretty sure Hayes doesn't possess their speed or athleticism

Exactly - He could even slot into the first team next year as a second KPF/ruck rotation with Nank next year if necessary (I mean Soldo did it this year and he has a piss-poor tank). I heard he kicked 6 in a game for Eastern this year as well, not many mugs can do that! I've even heard a few "experts" saying that he is potentially the best KPF in the draft, along with being the best ruck. I'd personally take him over Allen...I guess the biggest worry is that Freo take him @5, other than that, I reckon he'll be our first selection @17.

The queries in relation to his tank, has to raise doubts over his ability to play KPF at AFL I reckon.
Id be looking at a big mobile type that can push up and get to as many contests as possible and play some ruck time. Don't have to be a Buddy or Carey (although that would be nice) just need to be physically capable of playing the role, bringing the ball to ground for our smalls and mediums.

All i see with Hayes is a Tyronne clone ,couldn't be less interested in a player .
BIG NO from me for Hayes .

Ben Brown?

Ben Brown?
He's the one exception to the rule. On the other hand there are lots of gun midfielders drafted later. KPF is a position that requires footy smarts so generally you either have it at 18 or you don't which is why teams kinda already know who can make it and who can't. And teams generally have a better grasp on which players have the athletic traits to play forward. Of course not every KPF drafted early is a gun but picking a KPF say 25-30 onwards is generally a waster of time. You're hoping they will be able to play flank or midfield.

Jack had the smarts early on , remember one old poster when we drafted him said that was his key strength. But it’s a rarity at that age esp for kpf

I'm not that keen on Hayes as Nankervis is young and looks fairly durable and the team wasn't really reliant on his taps anyway, the side won a number of clearances with Grigg as ruckman im tje grand final because once the ball hit the deck, Grigg would act as an extra midfielder. Unless a guy is a transcendent talent like Naitanui I wouldn't go for a ruck early. It depends how good he is as a forward and I'd prefer an actual forward not a half and half. Ruckmen are generally cheap anyway and you're bound to find someone languishing in the reserves sitting behind the incumbent.

Grundy goes okay.
