FFS why do so many posters want to "release Doc into the midfield"?

We looked terrible when Doc played midfield late last year.

He did sweet FA in midfield and our defence looked disorganised.

We have the wonderful fortune to have an AA HBF - why weaken one of our few strengths??

If we need mids - trade or draft them - and leave Doc where he dominates.

Obviously, the man who can sing tenor.” - Henry Ford

Hi all.

I really like this side:
B: Plowman Jones Marchbank
HB: Byrne Weitering Cunningham (this is obviously experimentation - but he's line breaking speed and kicking could really set us up.
C: Fisher Cripps Docherty
HF: Charlie Harry Rayner
F: Pickett Levi Wright

Foll: Kreuz, Kennedy, Murphy

IC: Ed, Lang, JSOS, Simmo

Emg: Willo, Macreadie, Kedge

Depth: Pick 10, Lobbe, Phillips, Lamb, ASOS, Thomas, Kerr, Boek, Polson, etc...

I really like the idea of Cunningham at haft back

There's 2 reasons why I suggested we move Docs into the middle. The first is we've just lost one of the best mature midfielders in the competition, out of a midfield that was already weak and now lacks speed and experience.
The second reason is we now have one of the best defensive lines in the league. Byrne, Williamson, Simmo, Marchbank, Plowman, Jones, Silvagni, Rowe and possibly Weiters if needed can definitely cover Docs loss out of the backline.
Its not without its risks, but need to start becoming a more attacking team and putting Docs on the wing will strengthen our midfield and make us a huge attacking threat imo

Because Docherty could be an AA midfielder

Not the best disposal but is quick and tackles like his life depends on it. Moved to a fwd flank at times, could be a good pressure forward.
I would still be hopeful that he can make it off HB from what I've seen if he can improve his kicking. He reads the play really well, shuts down with his speed then creates a contest with his pressure every time.
Just really like the kid!
Where do you see him going? Pick 73 or are you confident he'll slide to the rookie?

73 at best, likely rookie

Most attack comes from defence. Docherty is vital with ball use as is Weitering & Williamson. We are looking at one of the great Carlton defences of all time if we leave them there.

Our midfield is developing well. Most are going to be around for another 6-10 years. Cripps (elite) Charlie (elite) SPS (elite) Supported but Cuningham Fisher Kennedy (all probably very good) maybe Polson & Lang with Kerridge as depth. Curnow still has a few years as well and Pickett could be anything. We then add Pick 3 & 10 (who will be mids) and maybe Pick 30. in 2018 let this group develop. On top of that is Murphy. There is a lot of talent in it.

Then in 2018 trade/draft try and get a Kelly type and a few more kids. All of a sudden our defence and midfield is set. Looks good to me. Patience

The group of Kelly Cripps Curnow SPS Charlie Cuningham Polson Fisher Cerra Coffield Kennedy Lang Pickett pushing through the midfield and forward looks good to me :)

I’m in the leave Docherty and Weitering back group. I think Williamson can push into the midfield rotations next year.

Thought for you HARKER We are within a couple of goals of the Tigers at 3QT in our Round 1 match 2018. The match winning move is Weitering to the forward line.

I see Willo as a damaging HB. He is composed, reads the ball well coming in and then is left foot out of defence can break up zones. He may play some mid in time but like others needs to settle in a role for now.

Docherty Byrne Williamson with Weitering & Marchbank makes for a very attacking defence

Welcome to the new season of "Everyone's A Midfielder!" starring the entire cast of the Carlton Football Club! You're a midfielder and you're a midfielder and you're a midfielder...............

It's the sequel to "Eveyone's a defender!" which apparently bombed at the box office.

So much so Gibbs declined to be in Part 2

Yeah Penrith's the guy.
Been watching some old games on youtube and i've been super impressed by him. Tidy disposal, great 1 on 1, super quick.
What's the knock on him? There doesn't seem to be too much chatter about the kid..
Still rushes his kicks a bit, and hasn't really shown any ball-winning ability through midfield.

A WYSIWYG small defender.

Sam Jacobs thread?

This is what some don't understand or maybe don't care to.

You cannot load up with too many of the same positional players (especially if they're of genuine quality) and then endeavour to re-distribute them around the ground, for it all to make some sort of sense.

We had Warnock, Jacobs, Hampson and Kreuzer and juggled them around so much, we confused ourselves.
Trying to make Hampson a forward and then Kreuzer a forward and in the end we gave up the best tap ruck-man of the lot.

Just don't wish for a similar **** up to come about with our back-line talls, hence some decisions will likely need to be made.
It does seem though that JGM will be hanging around, ASilvagni has got himself another year and Rowe isn't going anywhere and even there we ave 4 trying to go into 2 if things remain status quo. We can't fit Jones, Marchbank, Weitering, Macreadie and then a 192cm Plowman into the one back-line and either we'll have to try and re-distribute some roles or confine one player at least into the VFL..........and you know where that will end up.

Our list isn't particularly well balanced right at the moment, but we have got the quality. Just don't want to see it wasted.
