Im pretty stoked about how well SOS and Co have re-balanced the list over the last two draft/trade periods.
Defensive balance in particular is not only stacked with exciting youth but also has plenty of reserve in experience with Jones/Alex and Rowe and McCreadie/Williamson vying for positions. Mullett inclusion as an older recruit adds to depth.

Midfield is looking much deeper for 2018 ( Cripps and Ed back) but also Kennedy /Lang added with Charlie/SPS/Fisher/Cuningham/Pickett/Polson and #3 and #10 coming...

Forward line looks ordinary by comparison - but Mckay and Kerr and maybe LeBois should be pushing into 22 and Wright/Lamb will have to fight for inclusion as both Cripps and Kennedy will be 'resting' up forward on rotation and I expect Murphy to play a lot of HFF/Wing this year... IF we are lucky enough to score Raynor will be some welcome factor X.

To think that players like Fisher/Williamson/McCreadie will have their work cut out to get into starting 22 not to mention new draftees this year as well as some expected DFA action - it is a new Carlton.

A lot of work to go in this pre-season to make things gell - but all points towards Bolton having many more options to consider when developing a game plan week to week...

FA targets will become really clear during the season according to where the obvious 'holes' are if any...and SOS is already well placed with picks for the next trade/draft period and a lot of cashola.

All that Bolton has to achieve is another 20 or so games into the new core of youth and maintain a competitive game against any side we play to have set the Club up for rapid rise in 2019 and beyond. There wont be any huge thrashings copped this year s long as the engine room of Cripps/Kennedy/Ed/Kreuzer can stay on teh park and develop their own mojo with kids running off them.

After finally 'releasing Gibbs' (literally) the logical progression is releasing Docherty into the midfield.

Mullett's output actually stacks up pretty well with similar half backs..

Perfect fit age wise also, keeping all this information in mind..

Plowman(23) Jones(27) Weitering(20)
Mullett(27) Marchbank(21) Byrne(23)
Docherty(24) Cripps(23) Murphy(31)
Pickett(22) Casboult(28) SPS(20)
Silvagni(20) McKay(20) Rayner(19)

Kruezer(29) Charlie(21) Kennedy(21)

Lang(22) Cuningham(21) Ed(28) Fisher(20)

All of a sudden our age profile is looking a lot more competitive with our talent profile looking off the charts.
Think Mullett is only 25 mate, so even better! He'll get a good chance to cement a spot this year if he's willing to work hard. But otherwise, he'll go the same way as Palmer and Smedts in 12-24 months.

Pretty much. If we pick him up he knows it is perform quick smart or out the door in no time at all.
Although think he is more or less signed on to be back up at this point and hope he can take a step forward to another level in a different role.

Let me frame this for you in a different way...

Why do clubs often say about flankers "we see him progressing into the midfield"but you never hear them talk about midfielders progressing to halfback?
Because playing in the heart of midfield is the most aerobically, technically and tactically demanding position on the field.

You're also glossing over how many midfielders move into other positions as they age or as teams supplant them with better players. Or how some midfield draftees are considered 'versatile'.

Frankly, anything more than a quick search on Footywire will explain this for you.

You were obviously out sniffing the roses this morning, I really hope this fairy tale comes true too, we're in Gold Coast suns new franchise territory with all the chops to the list over the last few years - but minus all the concessions they had, fingers crossed our boat doesn't sink too. What did we beat them by again?? We are five years away at least!
That's the reality of it.
I'm not saying the kids will be crap, it's just going to take a long time.

Doc is AA HBF - FFS just leave him there and if we need MIDS - SOS should go and recruit some!!!

What you are promoting is just ridiculous.

Sure play Doc in the middle in an emergency - but when he was played as a MID last year he was terrible and so was our defence.

Bingo.

Took 200 marks as a rebound hbf, blokes like that don’t come around too often, if ever.

He’s the general down back.

Exactly! same can be said about weitering

I say Doc goes mid and forward of centre or at least rotates based off the momentum of the game. We have plenty of backline talent and depth, not enough midfield talent. Doc needs to step up and fill the Gibbs void.

The Club bottomed when
1. Malthou$e was served his eviction notice and replaced by Bolton; and
2. A dysfunctional trade and draft operation was fixed by the appointment of SOS as List Manager - who many on here criticised.

It has all been upside since then and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. If it takes a flag for you to be happy that is your problem. It is a fact in life that young recruits take time to become fully functional AFL players - so what? What I am happy to see is a list which looks like it has some chance of morphing into a formidable competitive animal over the next few years - and investment in the right processes to build and sustain a competitive football team.

Will every player succedd probably not. Will the Club definitely win a flag in the next 5 years - no one knows, are we likely to be in the mix - i think so. Neither of these measures are relevant to a rebuild and reset - the likes of which very few established Clubs have had to go through - sans enormous financial input from the AFL and numerous dubious concessions - none of which Carlton has enjoyed.

btw - you seem to think you have a mortgage on reality - don't be so arrogant, the forum is full of posters who understand 'reality' and are happy to see an emerging better 'reality' for the first time in a decade.

If there is one thing that our performance as a football club over the past 15 year should have taught us, is that no person who is part of our club should be beyond criticism.

Certainly Stephen Silvagni is a very marked improvement on previous managers responsible - but he can (as can everyone) do better.

Renaissance’s don’t just happen, and for them to happen people should always question and demand higher standards.

If boek hadn’t of played 3 decent games at the end of the year would have been first gone.

White got the most of himself and a great servant but needed to go.

IMO smedts was the worst player I’ve ever seen pull the jumper on for Carlton. Harsh but true.

Ruthless delistings but needed to be done for the greater good. If your doing a total rebuild you don’t half arsed delist.

I no longer have a whipping boy, who will it be.

I would like 2/3 of O’shea, mullett, miles, lamb, hartung picked up. Solid backup & solid vfl players to help the kids develop.

Few new targets for the ignore list too

You could always choose Kerridge, he's tracking nicely for this years whipping.
Probably one of the most undeserved 2 year contract renewals that Andrew McKay was responsible for.

Aaron Joseph says Hi.

Pfft no way. This side will soon have the best squad of young talent in the league. Once they are all 20-24 we will be competing. And when they are 24-28 watch out.

Haha 37, never did one thing that impressed me. Played safe, soft, poor skill.

Who you got for a top ten?

Expectation and draft position weigh in here. Leaving David Clarke & digby Morrell safe
gotta say never been fond of those head-kicking worst ever threads - race to the bottom of club support

From memory didn't Mullet play some very good games as a run with /tagger role? Maybe he could fill the Carrazzo role.

Good Reply ...totally agree with your reply here..

The thing with kids is you dont know !! Some will show they've made it at 21 and some will show it at 25. Painting a brush over a set of young men and saying their in the same boat development wise because their all 19 is rubbish...Some will take longer and some will find their range earlier...build a base and then improve again.

Just my 2 cents worth...drafting is an vague and imprecise process as it is...there is no way you can say we'll be world beaters by 2024 cause we've got kids. There isn't a gauge that tells you how long their gonna take to develop as individuals or as a team..

Gonna have to be patient...but maybe, hopefully not as patient as we initially thought !!

Stuffed if I know but from video highlights he has leg speed that Carrots never had.
For mine I always struggled when watching North games to work out whom was MacMillan, Wright and Mullett so remembering what he did specifically in any game I saw is a bridge too far for my memory. The video highlights is only way I could identify whom he actually was between those 3.
