Considering rookies can play unimpeded from next year one would think most clubs would go 38-6.

Why give mandatory 2 years for ND if you don’t have to

Exactly, unless of course, some absolute 'must-have' gems were still left on the table after our #72...........which there won't be.

Id hate to be in charge of team selection this year. Not because we have too many superstars. But because we have so many kids with huge potential that need games into them before our 2019 season.

Williamson
Cuningham
Sps
Lang
Pickett
Kennedy
Fisher
McCreadie
McKay
Polson

Just to name a few... I'll go out on a limb and say i think SOS will go to the draft and again do whats best for our future rather than 2018.

If Rayner is there he will take him. And at 10 i feel if Higgins is available, SOS will pull the trigger and take 2 forward/mids.

Lets say we pick up Lynch and Sloane next year as free agents. With another 20 games into Cripps, Sps, Kennedy, Fisher, Cuningham etc. Add Sloane to go alongside Murphy, our midfield will be strong.

If we take Rayner and Higgins and get 15 games into them then put lynch up forward with Curnow, we will look extremely dangerous in 2019.

Hf: Higgins Curnow Pickett
F: Sos Lynch Rayner

I just think although our midfield isnt elite right now. If we took Rayner and Higgins, our team looks more dangerous. Add Sloane to the mix and games into the kids in 2018. 2019 could be massive. And our midfield depth will be looking pretty good.

Last 5 drafts have taken something like 77, 76, 70, 61 and 68 live picks (ignoring passes and rookie elevations).

That works out to be about 70 live picks per draft.

There might be 97 list vacancies across the league, but I assume clubs are going to increase rookie list spots at the expense of senior list spots, given rule changes.

We could end up with extra picks in the 60s and 70s. We may not like anyone there or we might have some Polson/Williamson-esque targets. But definitely some scope to take more than 3 and maybe even more than 4 ND selections.
You need to consider the clubs that pass, and those that don't.

In 2015, Geelong had picks 67, 85, 103 and 121 after their trade activity. With the (now different) academy bid system and teams passing, they became picks 59, 66, 69 & 70.

Pick 66 was Menegola, and pick 69 was Buzza, so there's value to be had. I think there'll be upwards of 75 live picks, and I think we'll take a pick after 72.

Considering rookies can play unimpeded from next year one would think most clubs would go 38-6.

To get ahead of the rookie draft order if there's prospects you want to invest two years in. The salary difference is chump change in AFL terms, and we have cap room.

Generally speaking most first round rookie picks get two years anyway, so if there's someone you value, it's a smart move.

You seem to think I'm prejudging him for the WADA penalties, and that I'm allowing that to influence my opinion as to whether he'd be a good/bad pick up.

You want to replace the most important role player in our team - as he covers CHF, FF, ruck - with an old FF who is more than 10 cm smaller, who has had a year out of AFL, is coming back from injury, and is two years older? And is just as inaccurate?
*************************************************************************************

He may cover these roles, but he is not very good at it. We have endured 8 years of Casboult's kicking, and the excuses and waiting for him to come good. Just hasn't happened and won't happen. Not one club has shown any interest in him which tells you a lot. He cannot improve but just go downhill.

Rowe who is a broken down veteran, runs rings around Casboult whether he plays in the ruck, defence or forward line. That is why he was given an extension, because he is the insurance policy, and he gives you everything. I would prefer Rowe in the square, because he actually brings other players into the game.

I would rather take a punt on a 29 y.o drug cheat with a questionable body, than have to endure another year of 8 years of Casboult re-runs.

I don’t think we need Lynch we could swap him with McKay and your forward 6 still looks just as dangerous.
Our free agent targets should be Sloane, Gaff, Wallis and/or Smith. (Try to get 2 of the 4)

If you feel this way - and feel comfortable talking about a player this way - then I think I'm about done discussing this with you.

The last thing I will say is this; if you think that you're going to get another eight years of Casboult running around, you'd be point blank wrong. Harry McKay is the one who you should be looking at, as he plays Casboult's role as the hybrid ruck/forward. If he takes sufficient strides in terms of fitness, you could see him stepping into Cas's role inside next year; if not, it could take a year, which is coincidentally the length of Casboult's contracts for the last two years.

But then, pessimism is your thing, so if you think I'm being entirely too optimistic, that's fine too.

Casboults biggest issue isn't his kicking, it's that he can't follow up at ground level. The opposition know as long as he doesn't mark it they'll be able to rebound strongly off him
See, that I actually agree with.

It's why I'm actually pretty optimistic about Big H coming on to overtake Cas at some point next year. Harry's quick and agile for his size, knows where the goals are, and doesn't mind hurting people in a tackle. There's going to be more than a few full backs hearing footsteps in a year or so.

It's also about support.

That's when Rayner swoops from behind and pile drives the opposition into the ground. Close up view of the other "green shoots".

But that's not Levi's fault, most big guys are a bit limited at ground level. We need our smaller players to be poised to shark the ball when Cas brings it to ground. Isn't that how it's supposed to work?
If the opposition are getting it instead, then our smaller players aren't working closely enough with our tall forwards.

Interesting concept the idea of bringing in a confirmed and penalized drug cheat to the club. Would that mean we acquiesce his behaviour or does the fact he was banned from the game (and consequently missed the Dogs' flag) mean he starts with a fresh sheet. Will he wear invisible stripes (no not the Roos away strip) for the rest of his career. Are there some behaviours we simply feel are too repulsive to accept even when the perpetrator has been charged and sentenced ie, Stevens, Lovett, Ablett Snr etc.......Milne & Montagna the greyest of grey areas here.
