Think your going a little bit early saying Weitering is soft.

You honestly don't think he's been soft?
Do you feel that Bolton would be happy watching him playing dead possum?

Weitering showed his willingness to show others how much things hurt in '16 and even though he got better this year, he has to get......harder.
It's a tough game and showing everyone how much you're hurting won't be doing you any favours. Your weakness will be exploited.

By the way, I do like the guy and know he'll be an asset going forward.
I'm sure he knows what he has to do as Bolton won't mince words.....even to a #1 selection. That I know.

No question Weitering has to harden up .
Bolton recognized this early and gave him some tough love in teaching him to endure .
Weitering is a class footballer though and once his early AFL lessons are learnt he has the smarts and ability to dominate wherever needed .
Jones' amazing emergence in defense in 2017 may well see plans change .
If he maintains/improves , he stays along with Marchbank and Plowman .
Macreadie also looks AFL class and may kick the door down for a senior berth down back .
This paves the way for Weitering to go forward and begin what could be a lethal combination with McKay , Curnow , Pickett and Silvagni .
Next season will of course have plenty of growing pains but going forward that lot would be a nightmare for opposition defenders .

How many rookie spots do we have to fill?

Happy to take on O'Shea as a rookie but wouldn't want to take on Shaw as anything more than a rookie selection. Even then, not 100% sure we should.

He improved that aspect of his game substantially I'm 2017 and certainly played injured for some of the season. He may not naturally be a resilient person but he is a very intelligent one. As he continues to harden physically and mentally, I'm sure this won't be a problem in the future.

I may have placed in wrong thread but on analysing our team, I'm liking the work of the recruitment team more and more. With Bolts and co. working hard on development it's not unfathomable that we could be playing finals in 2019.

My thoughts on the draft has chopped and changed dramatically over the past 5 months. The one thing that has remained consistent is my belief that we need to spend majority of our picks this year on players that can transition through the midfield. Having 34 players currently on the senior list and 3 on the rookie my draft list as it sits today is:

#3 - Dow
Alternatively: Rayner, LDU or Cerra

#10 - Brayshaw
Alternatively: Bonar, D.Fogarty or O'Brien

#30 - L.Fogarty
Alternatively: Spargo, Kelly or Garner

#72 - Penrith

#95 - Giro or

#96 - Pass

R#3 - O'Shea

R#21 - L.Hickmott

IR - Cabdi

IR - McDaid

That sits our list at 39/5/2 and gives us some terrific additions

Carlton Blues
Simpson - Jones - Marchbank
Plowman - Weitering - Byrne
Petrevski-Seton - Cripps - Cuningham
Kennedy - McKay - Wright
C.Curnow - Casboult - Pickett
Kreuzer - E.Curnow - Murphy
Fisher - Williamson - J.Silvagni - Lang

Northern Blues (Depth)
Penrith - Rowe - Macreadie
A.Silvagni - O'Shea - Mullett
Thomas - Brayshaw - Giro
Kerridge - Kerr - Polson
LeBois - Lobbe - Lamb
Phillips - Graham - Dow
Glass-McCasker - Cadbi - McDaid - Hickmont

*Injured: Docherty

With another year of development and players from the reserves putting pressure on spots I can see the 1st's winning between 5-8 games next year. What I am more hopeful for most though is the continual advancement of our reserves leading to success in the VFL. Looking back through recent history all of the Victorian premiership sides has had success around the time their senior teams do. Geelong, Box Hill, Footscray & Richmond have all been extremely strong and this has reflected in their senior sides.

Thank you for taking the time to read and please feel free to pick apart my team structure or draft picks as you feel fit. I would love to hear people's thought's on which position they believe McDaid will play if we indeed sign him.

5 days to go till draft day and feeling excited.

Go SOS!

Most Irish players start from the back, and McDaid is already tagged as defender in Ireland. Think he’ll be back pocket / HBF.

Sheehan was a forward and Byrne too, still think he could have been a good HFF, actually started up forward when starting out with the NB’s.

Heidelberg Heights and Banyule. Next Generation Academy although if he isn't bid on in either the national or rookie draft we can select him as a cat b

Cheers, Cat B vs IR.

Haven’t heard anymore on Stefan Okunbor since the combine, though would need to be drafted/rookied now with the imminent McDaid signing (not sure why we haven’t officially announced it, pending his arrival early next week by reports).

Weiters has two weaknesses: lack of aggression and lack of speed.

These can be exposed at both ends of the ground. However, I see his best role as an intercept marking defender with no immediate man to run with. TMac did a number on him during the Melbourne game. Could not go with him 1 v 1. On the flip side, he doesn't have the speed to lead a defender to the ball up forward.

The kid isn't perfect, I've been very hard on him this year but I feel like he will make it as a player and a very good one.

I don't think he'll be the best player in that draft crop (Curnow, Hipwood, Oliver ahead), but he'll lead that defence and use his smarts to set up and generate play, either through linking up or directing the half-backs into position.

Could be a big year for him with Docherty out.

I would like to know which other 19 year old in the comp, playing KP in defence is doing better?
Yeah mate some people forget that he's only 19. Give him another 1 or 2 years and we will see why he was drafted at 1. p.s. Welcome to the mad house.

We're a bigger chance to pick up Okunbor than Cabdi, and I don't think we're getting Okunbur at all.

Cabdi would have made it up the chain to a higher grade of football if he was any chance of getting drafted.

Cam Rayner tested at Ethiad stadium this weekend, completing the 3km time trial in 7.57 slower than expected.

Tanking or taking it easy after an injury?

Fogarty completed the same trial in 7.33.

Stephen Conole, the Lions Recruiter spoke about this on radio over the weekend and said that the four who took part were grouped together for the most part, so from his observation it seems there was nobody dictating the pace hence the slowish time. Everyone knew that endurance was a weakness for these guys and he didn’t seem to bothered by the times.

Plus said all of them were coming back from an injury and so may not have gotten their fitness up in the lead up to the test, especially since they have year 12 exams around now.

Who plays 3 & 4 talls these days and does well? Game has changed and will change further. One big forward is enough. The rest are mobile players

Adelaide- Walker 195, Jenkins 200, Lynch 191 and McGoven 191
Carlton- Kerr 194, McKay 200, Curnow 194 and Silvagni 191 we just need the defensive forwards like Betts and Milera (Cameron)
