Analysis 2017 List Management Discussion - Part 3

So just piecing together some training news and thinking a little bit left of centre and I’ve decided to come up with a team for round 1:

Fb: Plowman Jones Simpson
Will be a pretty set back 3 I think. Simpson will play loose a lot. Jones owns this spot and the last line of defence. It’s Jones domain.

Hb: Cuningham Marchbank Williamson
Two fast flankers who won’t back down and have good penetrating kicks plus Marchbank who will be our intercept king.

C: Lang E Curnow Daisy
I think Lang will be part of our midfield rotation, Ed will be our stopper again and another big body in the stoppages when the first liners are resting and Daisy just seems to be able to give something still. Bolts loves him and he will likely be in the team for the first part of the season

Hf: Pickett Weitering Fisher
Fast and hugely talented line. Don’t need to add much except that I like weits up forward.

Ff: Wright Casboult Lamb
My least comfortable line. I went with Lamb over Silvagni. I think this mix gives us two small stay at home forwards as Pickett and fisher will be pushing up the ground and hopefully spending more time in the midfield. Lamb to play the role of a pest every week, Wright to be Mr reliable. I think last year his numbers suffered when he had to play more midfield minutes.

R: Kreuzer Cripps Murphy
Murphy will gradually spend a lot more time up forward. However early in the season I think he’s going to be racking up the midfield minutes. Absolutely blitzed the gps stats for us every week. Brilliant gut runner.

I/c: Kennedy C Curnow SPS Macreadie/Asos

Plenty of running power on the bench and a tallish utility type defender which I think will still be part of the game plan.


That seems to be a fairly balanced team. It may not be our most talented group of players but it looks like a good mix of experience and there is plenty of flexibility in the line up too.

I think all of Silvagni, Byrne, Dow, Garlett, Mullet, Kerridge, Shaw, LOB, Mckay are very close but I really quite like the team I’ve come up with.

Polson Schumacher and Kerr are really promising but coming from a bit further back I think - track watchers!!! No one has mentioned much of polson all summer??

We have good bodies for injury cover too. Phillips, o’shea, lobbe and graham with Rowe coming back

Tough call. I like Jack and think he’ll make it, just not in round 1.

Interchange or starting. Don’t think it really matters anymore. Even with the cap everyone still plays plenty of game time. Can’t you imagine Charlie starting in the bench as bolts identified some role he can wreak havoc in that specific weak. Then unleashing him, fresh.

My two bob on our team's structure with explanation... Be warned it is somewhat left-field.

FB: Ciaran Byrne – Liam Jones – Caleb Marchbank
Byrne replaces the injured Sam Docherty and with Jones plays a more lock down role on their opponents while Marchbank plays his accustomed intercept role.

HB: Lachie Plowman – Jacob Weitering – Kade Simpson
These guys play as they did in 2017 with Plowman and Weitering to hold down the defensive fort while Simpson provides the much needed run.

C: Sam Petrevski-Seton – Patrick Cripps – Marc Murphy
The skills and football I.Q. for this line is outstanding and all three will rotate through the forward line.

HF: Charlie Curnow – Jack Silvagni – Levi Casboult
Now I am aware this might cause some unrest but if you watch our games against Sydney, Adelaide and West Coast again (just to name a few) you will see that both Curnow and Casboult roaming the wings and providing a marking option worked extremely efficiently and really made an opposition's defensive line struggle. The problem in these games was not having another marking target forward. Now, I'm not saying this is the way to go but definitely food for thought. Add them alongside Silvagni at CHF who applies terrific pressure and can be also very dutiful in the air, and we have a very unique half forward line.

FF: Matthew Wright – Harry McKay – Jarrod Pickett
Two goal sneaks and the Big H, who I am certain will clunk a few, but I would be happy for him to provide a contest to help bring the ball to ground for the likes of Pickett and Wright to work their magic. Also believe both goal sneaks, although probably more so Pickett, will spend ample time in the midfield.

R: Matthew Kreuzer – Matthew Kennedy – Ed Curnow
Kruez to continue playing his incredible Ruck/Roving style, Ed to negate the oppositions best midfielder, and the newly acquired Kennedy to work alongside Cripps and the other midfielders to raise our clearances. I also predict Kennedy will spend quite a bit of game time up forward to coincide with the team's rotations.

INT: Tom Williamson – Zac Fisher – David Cuningham – Jed Lamb
By far my hardest line but I went for these 4 guys because they cover every line on the field. Fair, it doesn't consider if we lose a key positional player but with the talls already on the ground, tactics can be altered and that position can easy be covered.

Williamson showed he is well suited to the back line with his aggression at the ball and his dash. Like many here, I believe he will make a seamless transition into the midfield to provide relief there also.

Zac Fisher showed last year he has the skills and work rate to play AFL and I believe his midfield and small forward game will be taken to a new level in 2017. Needs to work on his strength and courage in contests which will help raise his disposal count.

Cuningham had a somewhat sporadic year but what I was impressed with was his pace and work rate. Had some pretty solid performances against North, GWS and Melbourne and if what we hear is correct that he might be making a move to the half back line, then he really might stand up in 2018.

Lamb applies terrific pressure and is a relatively accurate kick on goal. His game on Sicily still has me smiling, but having said that he is lucky to be making the team over the likes of others.

Unlucky to miss: Dale Thomas (I guess), Sam Kerridge (I guess), Nick Graham (I guess), Paddy Dow, Lochie O'Brien, Jarrod Garlett, Harrison Macreadie, Alex Silvagni, Darcy Lang, Cam Polson and Aaron Mullett

Exciting stuff as my unlucky to miss section last year had 2 players. GO BLUES!!!

how likely (if mckay comes good) are we to play a forward line of mckay/curnow/casboult/silvagni?

I would think unlikely that all of McKay Curnow and Casboult would play in the forward line, seems to me there is only two spots available.

Harry and Levi look to be contending for that second key forward spot with Charlie a lock for the other spot.

Harry seems to be a bit more of an unknown quantity and if he is fit would seem to have a little more upside than Levi.

I'm not sure it's really too tall. Weits, March and Plow are pretty mobile, not traditional gorilla KPDs. For arguments sake I'll line them up against Richmond and Adelaide's starting 6s from the GF. Considering the Ade and Rich fwd lines are almost opposite of each other and the extremes (1 vs 4) there's not a massive amount of difference.

Nice input. Any reason? From that team it’s clear how much flexibility we have and how much exciting talent there is. If you’re uninspired simply because Daisy is in the team then you’ll probably be uninspired by our team round 1 because the way he’s talked about by bolts and the mentions he’s getting from track watchers suggests he’s going to be in the team. It’s hardly uninspiring knowing how much talent is pushing to get into the team I came up with.

19 goals 17 behinds isnt too bad for a 2nd year player in a forward line that can hardly function. Fix the conversion rate and things seem a lot better

I’m not seeing the gloom in Jack that others are.
2nd year, 2nd or 3rd tall forward.
He’s a kid FFS.
Don’t jump on the “he lacks pace” bandwagon. That’s bullshit when it’s all said and done, just one ingredient when baking a cake.
Had nearly 40 shots on goal as a second year forward with a team playing an ultra defensive game plan. Where our main mode of entry to the forward line being the bomb it long to a contest type.
I’m not much of a stat person, but those stats stack up very well when you line them up with similar players at the same point in their careers.
Just look at a couple of other Jacks, similar heights, similar positions, in Riewoldt & Gunston.
Plus I remember the slow burn his Dad was, didn’t look like a footballers arse in his first couple of seasons. He turned out pretty handy.
Give them some time, give them some sun & water, watch them grow. Many here would pull out the shoots thinking they were weeds.
