Really excited to get another year into the kids.

In two years, our potential A graders (in their position) from this current squad are:
Murphy, Gibbs, Docherty, Cripps, Kreuzer, Jones, Weitering, SPS, Curnow, Pickett, Byrne, Marchbank, Plowman.

Not discounting Williamson, McKay and Fish who I also rate very highly and Simmo could still be around too.

If our development goes as planned we'll have a solid 22 and now it'll be about strengthening it and creating good depth with competition for spots.

Right now I could comfortably make a best 22 from about 27 players. Factor in retirements and trades and we still have work to get more quality in but the core is great.

All hail SOS

Maybe we should play him forward during our practice matches for next season. Then Charlie could spend a bit more time in the midfield.

Even if you look at the need to cover for long-term injuries we will soon be at the point where we will have 3 or 4 excess back men; Jones has come in out of the blue, Byrne has made as successful return from injury and ASOS served with aplomb and may have another couple of years in him. With Marchbank to come back and Macreadie and Rowe potentially in the wings, we would be well-served to give at least two of our back men an extended run forward. I still like Weitering forward or even Rowe in the short-term if he comes back! Whatever happens, I don't want us to end up losing a potential long-term talent like Macreadie or Williamson because there is no spot for them down back!

Agreed on all of the above with the exception of concern for Willa. He won't be doing the permanent back role much at all beyond 2018. All class mid.

I wouldn't be too concerned about Williamson, as he'll likely find his home on a wing. Is an Isaac Smith type and given his athleticism, can run all day.

Macreadie @ #47 was 'must-have' value and looks capable of locking down a key back position post for years to come.
There will be some shuffling of Key-position personnel as we go along and I still see Weitering going forward. Maybe even so, we could still be too top-heavy and if that does become the case, we'll have trade value on our hands.

That may not be the way we wanted things to go, but who would have planned for Jones to do what he's doing?

So who's on the de-list train this week?
Gorringe
Korchek
JGM
Sheehan
Jasck
Sumner
Armfield(ret)
Buckley
Palmer(not sure contract status)

Perhaps earned new contracts:
Thomas
Boekhurst
Lamb

Now Keep for depth:
Kerridge
Graham
Palmer had a contract for 2017 only, going by what I read on our contract status page...............
We are as good if not better than Lions and I like Lions list. Our defence is set and elite and we have more too end talent developing. Charlie SPS Pickett Fisher Cuningham Cripps are way ahead of their midfield. McKay will be better than Schache
Why do they always beat us then...........just slightly bias I would say!!!

Brisbane's list is a couple of years ahead of Carlton's in terms of depth. I dont think the get me out off Brisbane factor is a real as it was anymore - a lot of the old brigaders are now gone.

Rockliff is still a chance to leave at the end of the year I reckon.

They had 4 players at 192+, Milburn 189, Enright 187 in 2009

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_AFL_Grand_Final

Not worried by Richmond's structure this year, it is not a trend, but does works well during the home and away. I have a bet on that they will go out in straight sets, don't think it will hold up in finals.

The thing that is missing with the Tigers is the lack of contested ball, which they sit outside the top 8. (* have the same problem)

People say the Dogs won last year with a new trend shorter forward line (still taller than the Tigers), but people forgot that they were ranked 4th for contested possession.

Contested possession wins finals
You're right I always forget Mackie is that tall (192)
I don't doubt you can play 4 talls but I think they can easily get exploited and I can see it happening to our backline. I think back to Hawthorn when they had Rioli, Breust and Poppy running around. I don't think we would be able to match up on considering our most athletic tall would have to go to Gunston. It's the main reason why one of the Marchbank or Weitering imo have to add another string to their bow and be able to play other positions to a high level.

Don't mean to be a pedant but you left out Daisy ;)

There is no doubt that flexibility will make us a better side. When the group improves as a whole, these concerns will reduce dramatically. You also have to be mindful that in 2-3 years, when guys like Casboult, Rowe and ASOS are no longer on the list, the amount of KPP's we have will be better balanced

It's clear we're after mids and we're going to want a few of them, or at least one quality one and some support staff.
Some player positions will change and I'll take out Murphy, Gibbs and Casboult out of this, as future plans may need to be looked at beyond them.
I'll only list players that will be around for a minimum of 5 years here;

Byrne Jones Plowman
Docherty Marchbank ................. Maybe Pickett, but if not, I don't think we have anyone else that will serve being that lightning-fast exit player.

Kreuzer Cripps ............
Williamson ............. Cuningham. No surprise we're going to need a couple of A-Grade mids here. SPS will spend time in the middle also.

Petrevski Weitering CCurnow
JSilvagni McKay ....................... Speedy goal-kicking forward. I don't think we have that player yet.

Fisher Pickett Macreadie Polson

No mystery in that we need more depth, but along with a three to four more mids, we may need that quick & clean back-man and a small forward.
Reckon that's where our primary targets will be over the course of the next two years, but someone like a Rayner or Stephenson may appeal this year.

Pickett has been pigeon holed as a forward - but I get the sense that once he has a pre-season, we'll drop him in the middle and he'll set the comp on fire.

Galluci, Lebois, Sumner etc all still on the list suggest we have other options for goal sneaks - his talent might almost be wasted up forward.

I think Pickett has proved he could be the small forward we are after rather than the lightning quick HBF. I personally would also include Ed into that midfield as think he still has 5+ years to go.

But yes mids mids and more mids please.

Interesting, but if in the midfield might be just for 5 - 10 mins a quarter to provide that spark and x factor.

There are so many directions we could take with a few players at the moment and if the development is right they could be really powerful.

Pickett - burst player through the guts.
Charlie - burst player through the guts
Cripps - another target up forward
Weiters - mobile half forward
Marchbank - spent time on wing
Willo - move to midfield
Fisher - burst player through the guts.

Some pretty exciting options if they pan out.

Cripps was pick #13 in 2013 draft. Yet I see a 0 in the elite column for pick #13.

That pretty much nullifies that person's opinion on elite players for me.

Could say the same thing about Zac Merrett (just one example) who was taken with #26 in the 2013 draft.
