His debut was good, and since then he's been pretty average for a contested player. SPS plays more on the outside, and has a contract for next year.

IIRC had like 30 touches in that game, haven't really seen him put together a similar preformance since.
No doubt, the kid is a contested beast and we do need some more fire power in that particular area.
I would have like him to have put up some more similar type performances, but then again if he had, he's trade value would be much higher, as it stands, a pick the the teens would probably be around the mark.

Quad and broken hand this year iirc..... hasnt had a good run at it, no doubt facevalue has dropped due to said injuries, as harks said probably worth a mid teen pick. Youd walk away whistling dixie.

We have one of the worst midfields in the game yet there are 8 teams with more points scored against than us.

I agree our giant(s) backline is baffling, yet it's somehow effective.

I don't think our midfield is as bad as some people are saying, our top 4 Murphy Kruz Gibbs and Cripps as a starting midfield, are as good as some of the better starting midfielders going around, it just drops off very sharply for us, we have some good young talent at the club in, SPS Fisher Cuningham and potentially even Charlie, but they will take time and we need to add at least 2-3 more.

I think people are seriously under rating Hopper. His first season was a lot more impressive then SPS's and I know I wouldn't trade him for anything less then a top two pick

If we let Gibbs go and gain only Hopper, more short term pain is on the cards next year.
If Gibbs goes, we need to add Kelly and Hopper to be in the green

You hit it on the head.Spot on.

Just a point on H.McKay.
Harry was taken 1 pick behind
Weideman, although Harry is yet to debut Sam has only managed a handful of games.
Being nearly a year younger than Sam he is a year behind in development.

The criticism and paranoia regarding him not being in the 1sts is laughable
I'm happy for Harry to continue in the VFL for a while, maybe get a couple of games at the back end of the season. More development and time to build his body and fitness. Fans are so harsh on young key forwards if they don't light it up straight away, we saw that when Weitering played forward, no patience from so many. I've got no problem with him spending time away from the lime light at this stage.

Definitely. Surely we are fast approaching the time when we stop gifting talented, needed players to opposition teams for a negative return.

IMO we should keep Gibbs.

From GWS' perspective, its current 2017 first has 1,000 points deducted from it (so somewhere deep in the draft order). Two 2017 firsts looks very attractive, but lose Kelly and Hopper.
From our perspective, we lose Gibbs, Casboult and our 2017 first round pick, get Kelly and Hopper.

We go to the draft next year and hopefully we don't have to match the bid for Ben SOS before we use our first draft pick.
With that in mind aren't we better off using a future first rounder (2018) and keeping one of the 2017 first rounders in this scenario. Simply because (a) we hope the 2018 pick is a later pick and (b) then our earliest pick if required for Ben SOS isn't compounded as much. Does that make sense?

It makes sense. Good post Poultry.
Regardless, it will cost us to get both Kelly and Hopper, even if Gibbs goes and we use what Adelaide gives us.
Due to the Penalty and where any academy kids sit, GWS may prefer the 2017 picks rather than 2018.
If we are getting Kelly and Hopper, and SOS judges the 2017 draft crop is not great, then I suggest take the hit in 2017 and keep our 2018 picks.

If Shiel is a free agent in 2019, then so is a host of other players such as Cameron?
I think GWS might try to trade a player next year to maximise the value before taking the AFL free agency compensation in 2019 ... (If lose 2 in 2019, GWS still only gets the one compensation pick?) Reckon this will be the discussion next year.

I don't understand how anyone is confident of getting Kelly. Sure we may have more assets to trade than North but I doubt we are willing to offer him 9 million over 9 years so surely they are in the box seat.

Money in the short term isn't everything. There's also:
  • Bolton's vision
  • upward trajectory of playing list
  • mates already at the club
  • Corporate supporters to look after you post-football

I get your point, just feels like hope more than anything. Would take him over nearly anyone in the comp with the exception of probably Cameron, Bont or (Close your eyes) Daniher.

Daniher is a 'close your eyes' proposition on so many levels...
