Good question. Byrne is the better athlete and the dasher out of defence.
Sheehan has the magic boot, is very disciplined and a better lock-down defender.

I have little idea what our starting back 6 may look like next year........and that's a good thing, as I feel our game will also change tack.

Could Byrne move up the ground onto a wing, and Gussy stay at HB?

Went about trying to figure out why Scrimshaw was being described as solid in defence week after week, had a look at last week's NEAFL team sheet and he's playing a key defensive post along with Brooksby. Predictable ****ing Eade and Clayton.

Maybe SOS can rescue him at the end of next year?

POS: Midfielder, Ht 187cm, Wt 85kg, DOB 8/6/1999
From Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country

The tough, composed and hard-working midfielder started his carnival in brilliant fashion, steering Vic Country to a win over the Allies with 34 disposals and 10 marks in a dominant display. He didn't quite have the same impact thereafter, but recruiters are well aware of his talents. Davies-Uniacke is the right size for a modern midfielder, he's competitive, good by foot and has a turn of speed, evident in his breakaway goal from a centre clearance against Vic Metro in round three of the carnival. Davies-Uniacke is a prospect you can see playing plenty of games at AFL level next year.

POS:
Midfielder, Ht 186cm, Wt 85kg, DOB 7/10/1999
From Eastern Ranges/Vic Country

Cerra didn't blitz at the carnival but is a midfielder you can depend on. He's classy by foot, keeps running all day, makes space for others with his hands and never appears rushed into his decisions. He had 24 disposals against Western Australia in Metro's round one win and 17 touches, seven tackles and seven clearances in their title-sealing win over South Australia at Etihad Stadium. A knee injury limited Cerra last season but he has pieced together a year of consistent showings in 2017 that makes him one of the leading midfielders up for grabs.

That's it, slide to our pick

Agree with this totally. It feels like we have our act together now with not only recruiting, but also development. We may be in a weaker position in coming years with our picks as we climb the ladder, but I now have faith not only with who SOS picks but how they will be developed and reach their potential. For too long it seemed be pick and hope. Now it seems to be pick and grow. Green shoots!

We've had some very promising early signs from kids picked late in last year's draft. Plus SOSOS late in 2015.

I think our systems and coaching have as much to do with that as does recruiting skill/luck.

Feeling very good about not needing early draft picks in order to add AFL quality players to this list! :thumbsu:

Can get turned around relatively easily, which shouldn't be surprising given his size against some of the guys he's been pitted up against.
Fortunately though there's usually back up there for support.

What I like about Lachie, along with most of the other guys in the back-line, is that they play with lots of energy
By that I mean, they're all hands and legs, like table football players............. even though table-football players don't use arms. :)

In one of DOC interview, he said the club aware of the blame Plowman gets from small forwards goals but said that:
1. it is a team defence, not one single person fault
2. Plowman useably the one closed to the small forwards when they kick for goal as he is the one to react and get back first

I really love listen to DOC interviews, so clear of team directions, instructions, structures, where team heading etc...

Well said ferrisb, Wells said the same about Geelong where they trust their recruits and developments to turn second rounders into firsts :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Who needs to draft KPS's when Cripps can just play CHF and rest in the middle.

I've been so pleased that he has worked on that side of his game. He's now a legit threat when the ball goes forward.

Maybe, but I don't really see a need for Byrne to move up the ground.
Feel it may be Williamson with his running ability, stamina and kick that may be moulded into that mid.

Need to find some KP forwards....Weitering back forward again? He wasn't that bad initially.
Macreade tried up there?

Is this a serious comment?
We have Mckay developing in the VFL, Curnow looks like he could be anything and we have a 195cm Ben Silvagni on his way next year.

Watching the replay we need to keep Gibbs at all costs. He is still young enough to play in our next finals push.

He also gives us the ability to push Cripps forward at times which really really excites me (not in that way either)

Give up our first this year for
Kelly/Hopper....we won't get both

Levi I think we will Lowball and get a 2nd rounder in and we will just take that to the draft

I feel it to be a serious comment.

McKay is a still somewhat of an unknown, but one we clearly have faith in.
Ben will need several years of development before he come into 'serious' play and Charlie? He may well prove to be better and more damaging around the ground.

It may seem like we've gone for a slow-slow build, but I don't think that's going to be the case, when we may have most of the puzzle pieces in place.
If we are after a serious ready-to-go forward then we aim for Lynch.

A lot can certainly be said if you're good at both ends...

The thing with drafting another KPF is, even if McKay comes on, and BSOS is a prodigy, we can still get a decent return on investment for a KPF should we end up overstocked.

IE. Take Brander this year, take BSOS next year. McKay has a few years' head start, and should be playing seniors while the others develop. If 2 of the three come good, we have a quality pair of tall forwards in 5 years' time. If all three of them do, we either adjust the gameplan to accommodate, or we trade one of our AFL standard KPF's for a high draft pick to help sustain our list quality moving forward, or trade them for a quality player who helps us win a flag.

The thing is, by the time all of McKay, Brander and BSOS are of an age to be playing seniors together, it's 2022 and the whole landscape has changed.

We certainly shouldn't be knocking back a quality KPF this year because we have McKay and hope to have Ben Silvagni. If there's a mid available at our pick who we think is more important to us, that's fine - just don't get sucked into thinking that McKay and BSOS will have us covered.

We also have a big surprise playing down at Preston by the name of Kerr.

Are we really calling out Kerr as something special?
He may develop into a nice third tall, but on my viewing, he hasn't got the big guns to develop into a serious, primary forward.

If there isn't space in front of him, he may find things very tough.
He hasn't the leap, the power off the mark, nor has he developed particularly great leading patterns yet (although being a forward in the VFL......you know)

Can't see much being achieved by such an exercise.
We have next year to sort out all the pieces, before being in a much more serious position come '19.

This is how I see it as well.
2018 will be much the same as this year.
2019 I can see us starting to work our way up the ladder.
2020 Will be the earliest that we'll start challenging for finals.

Natural progression. Definitely HBF
But if you throw in the possibility of Gibbs leaving and we gain picks to help get Kelly and/or Hopper. Or if we just take mitch McGovern. Then somehow pick up both Hopper and Kelly. We are that much more advanced come 2018.

Then if we did pick up lynch as a FA at the end if next year. I'd suggest we would expect to be plsying finals in 2019.

i believe we will be challenging for finals in 2019. i believe next year we will start moving up the ladder. i dont see us getting worse. 7 wins last year. 5 already this year (prob finish on about 7-8). Hopefully have 10 wins in 2018 (helped with another great post-season by SOS). Then 2019 push for finals with about 12-14 wins.
If we lose Gibbs, im confident SOS will not keep those picks (assuming 2 first rounders or close to it) and use in the draft but use it to get kelly/hopper or someone else fitting the age profile so we wont go backwards. The biggest loss i believe will be casboult as our forward line needs the structure he provides. could all be dependent on McKays (and Kerrs) development over the next 12-18 months

I also believe Shiel is out of contract by the end of 2018. If they fail to win a premiership in the next 2 years or so, there will be a few stars wanting to come home
