It's all in the planning and when to have as many pieces in place as possible and if it means letting go of an early first this year instead of a mid-table first next year, then fine, but the way some are talking about next years draft, you'd think there are Chris Judds and Dangerfields from picks 1 - 10.

We'll see what happens, but I still see us letting go of next years first in favour of this years first, if it comes to Kelly/Hopper.
......and you just know that the draft of 2019 will be so much better than '18's.......and after everything, we're talking about one player........just one.

Still a lot to play out, one thing I will say, Hill & Rankine are 2 of the best under age kids I have seen in a while

Yeah, yeah.......Just like Harley Bennell & Jack Martin. :)

Just give me a team that wants to win, respects each other, play for the coach and play for self-respect,
Sum of the parts over one hero, please.

Why don't you want to wait 1 season? What's the hurry? Not like we're going to win a flag next year.

It's about getting the process right so that we are a formidable unit for years.

Like I said, Hawks will back themselves to climb next year, but chances are they're going down even further.

If it does end up being a 2018 pick #3 for Gibbs we will be laughing vs #15+#18 this year.

Quality over quantity and patience. Two key factors to building a strong team.
100%. Next year's draft crop looks ridiculous. Get two picks inside the top 7 and you have two A grade elite players for the future! Look at how St Kilda are positioned this year with two first rounders. It gives you options on the trade trade or secures young talent. I'd fully endorse this kind of trading

Rozee and Walsh none too shabby either, will be some "riches" on offer.

I was in the trade 2018 first camp, but honestly while there is some talent in this draft, I don't see a player
that ticks all of the boxes at the pointy end.

Seeing blokes like L.Fogarty, in the second tier being attractive, if we acquire a couple of late firsts or
an early second (you all know how by now). Don't see Rayner and Stephenson as fitting the bill for our
needs unless we acquired a better inside type by trade, which takes away a pick for them. I like LDU, but a
little pedestrian for a top end mid. We don't need KPP. I was big on O'Brien but underwhelming, on the back
of phantom drafters reports that has been tagged out of games at school level. Like Coffield, but probably a
top 5 reach too.

You could add Lukosius and the King twins to the list of 17yr olds that would go in the top 30 if they could be drafted this year.

As apposed to selling the farm for Kelly? SOS is aggressive with this rebuild, but not stupid. Confident that we will retain a 1st round presence this year and next

Keep a close eye on Constable

Anyone see Barrett on the Footy Show last night? Dusty and manager are stiill sooking at Richmond for giving a lower contract to Dusty after GWS and other clubs passed on him last time round ...

Dusty is as good as gone IMO.
Richmond would be a pretty good club to at at the moment. Going to play finals this year, good list and pretty stable off field.
Gotta think the Dusty to GWS rumours are pretty rock solid.

These underagers nearly sound as god as Worpel did last season or Clem Smith did as an underage player ;)
Worpel definitely looked a first round player if he was in last years draft... this year, he might be lucky to make the third round from what I've heard. Is not coping well at all.

Yeah but the best thing about next year's is the beanstalks are very highly rated. Meaning with a pick 3 and 5, we could have a shot at the best mids. With this year's pick that won't happen best mids gone before we even get a pick.

Plowman is a tricky one.

I love his disposal by foot and his one-on-one aerial defence. However, at times he has brain fades and commits errors in crucial parts of the ground. Mind you, he is still young and Marchbank/Weiters also make mistakes occasionally.

I do think he is suited to play on a third tall more so than the gun small forwards of the competition. But we have so many slightly better options to use. This makes his place in the team shaky IMO.

I met him out once and he isn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree. However, he's a good kid and has a bit of cheek which I like. I really hope he continues to develop and hold his spot but it wouldn't surprise me if he becomes a back-up option as others grow and mature (Macreadie).

He was posting on here for a while btw

Wondering people's thoughts on some moneyball type options for a couple of list holes.

Ben Lennon from the tigers. Every chance to be a dfa at the end of the year as he's out of contract and they have a glut of small/mid size forwards ahead of him. Only just turned 22 and has kicked 22 goals in 8 vfl games I believe to date.

Reilly o brien is on Adelaides list. Not sure about contract status. Could be steak knives in a Gibbs trade young ruckman who's numbers in the sanfl seem very good. Turns 22 shortly so would just be coming into physical readiness for AFL.

Ashley miles 25yrs,is dominating vfl. Has his limitations but might be worth a look if we don't land hopper to chop Cripps out as one of our few inside mids.

Wouldn't expect any stars here, but all you have some upside and could be acquired cheap/free. Worth a look?

Anthony Miles* - older slower Graham. No point.

O'brien is very important to Adelaide. Considering Jacobs is getting older. He'd be worth a bit.

don't know what to think about Lennon. Looks good at VFL but can't crack it at the top level... Yet...

I imagine they have been watching players like Marchbank but more so Lever and trying to get him into that roll, which isn't a waste
Considering his attributes, it absolutely is. He has clear midfield potential, whereas those guys looked like commanding KPDs.

Pick 3ish to Richmond for their pick 14ish and 2018 1st

2017 pick 14ish and Carlton+Richmond 2018 1sts (3 first rounders) for Josh Kelly and Jacob Hopper.

Tiges get Naish and a top pick while Giants get 3 firsts, two of which are in a supposed strong draft.

Blaine Boekhorst for Harley Balic because why not
I'd want more from GWS. A lot more.

Hopper is going to Geelong apparently.
And Devon Smith, and a whole host of others. How are they paying for this?

We thought the well was dry last year in terms of high picks, it definitely is now. There's going to be a fire sale at Geelong if they want to make this happen.

No to Lennon; we have SOS and Kerr, both of whom are better forward prospects.

O'Brien suits Adelaide's system, they'll keep him. Probably not suited for us anyway.

Anthony Miles? Massive pass.

Hawks trade way too risky... And wouldn't want to lose Gibbs then not even use the picks we get in return until next year.

Must involve those picks or one in trade for someone like Hopper. If not go go draft with them as is.
Agree. Hawks would also still want to be in next years draft. How about:

#20 (Casboult FA compo) + CFC 2018 2nd round pick > Hawks
Hawks 2018 1st > Blues

Hawks would expect to have O'Meara, Rioli, etc. back next year so will expect to make finals in 2018.

If this years draft is shallow SOS may want as many 2017 first round draft picks as possible and moving up in next years draft would help also.

If we took #3, #15 and #18 to the draft we should have some very good options (A grade Mid, Ruck, Joel Garner)

For mine lennons a different sort of player to both of them. Less a hit up forward and more a mid smallforward ego best attribute is pressure and foot skills. High draft pick sos was keen on when he was negotiating the yarran trade.

Very hard to find fringe players at other clubs with out flaws.
Probably wouldnt cut it, if it's as shallow a draft as it's implied I'd potentially take a swing. Lucky we've got sos steering the ship instead of me maybe haha

Well they have their 2018 picks to play with and our 2017 second. That's enough trade currency. The new pay deal has probably improved their salary cap situation.

Why does Lennon get brought up every trade period? Personally I have no idea how he even got drafted, let alone for a first round pick. Sub 190cm slow HFFs with poor foot skills aren't particularly suited to AFL footy.

And yet here we are, talking about Rayner at pick 1 despite some clear similarities.
