I suspect 2 or even 3 of those names won't be there next season.

2 names only. LeBois is coming from some way back and learning on the run.

The other two are now out of our favoured age profile and for one reason or another, shown relatively little.

I thought I read the Rockliffs are just building a new house. Unless it's just some investment property would seem a bit strange to undertake such a project if you were dead set on leaving.
The same was said about Gibbs.

These AFL footballers with their massive paypackets could afford to negatively gear an investment property in every capital city.

Hunt is their 8th. Williamson is ours. We also have Rowe and ASOS around still.

I suspect Rowe and ASOS will play a fair bit of VFL footy next year. Jones holds his spot, and JW, Marchy and Plowman are all best 22. Macreadie might find it hard to force his way in next year.

Pickett has been pigeon holed as a forward - but I get the sense that once he has a pre-season, we'll drop him in the middle and he'll set the comp on fire.

Galluci, Lebois, Sumner etc all still on the list suggest we have other options for goal sneaks - his talent might almost be wasted up forward.

Once Pickett builds a tank he could play that speedy wingman type, ala Brad Hill. Once he gets the footy no-one will chase him down.

I went to the game on Saturday night and I've never seen anyone cover the ground like Pickett did. Was like he was running on one of those travelators you see at the airport.
Needs to develop more poise when kicking inside 50 and stay in the game when defending. Thought his job chasing was done in the 3rd to allow Burton to continue running to receive the ball back and goal.

That said it is finally coming together like we hoped after the JLT. Up until 4 weeks ago was a big disappointment for the year.

I was thinking our backline on the wkend is probably the best combination of players we've had all yr
Plowman Jones Byrne
Docherty Weitering Simpson/Williamson
Im struggling to find a spot for marchbank
Does anyone agree

We usually play 7 defenders anyway, with one playing loose.

BOOM! Problem solved.

I'm still not sold on going after Kelly at that price. One player doesn't make a team and North will find out if they get him. Would like 2 good Mids for his price and some player retention going forward. I'm worried?

Always quality over quantity. An A grade Midfield of Cripps Kelly SPS CC(part time) would be awesome. Will be able to fill the blanks around them EC, SK, DC

Full strength midfield before trade period

Murph - Cripps - SPS
Kruz - E.Curnow - Gibbs

Charlie roaming around also :swoon:

Very exciting. Add Cuningham Pickett Fisher Polson maybe Kerridge and then Hopper & Balic and all of a sudden it's a very good midfield with some depth. Can change very quickly and those kids have so much upside.

Getting Kelly has a good flow on affect.
Helps Cripps, releases Murphy a little, and Kelly is a goalkicking mid, which we don't really have alot of.
He makes us significantly better if we land him.

We need to be bold with Gibbs. Its non negotiable for mine.

With Lever and McGovern every chance of leaving the Crows this year (and both commanding 1st round picks) the Crows will likely have 3 x 1sts to play with.
  • Melbourne (Levers most likely destination) face either Port or Sydney (away) in an elimination final. They should get knocked out, leaving them to finish 7th (Pick 12).
  • West Coast (McGoverns likely destination) are likely to be finishing 9th (pick 10) and sending that pick Adelaides way for Gov.
  • In addition to those picks, Cameron is likely to be headed to the Lions for their second rounder (currently pick 18).
Most likely scenario - Adelaide finish runner up in the GF and have picks 10, 12, 16 and 18 to play with at the trade table (and lose McGovern, Cameron and Lever).

Its a golden opportunity for us to leverage some good compo from the Crows. They can well afford to lose one of those top 20 picks, load up with Gibbs while the window is open, and still pick up 3 x top 20 teenagers in the Draft (to get the list replenishment underway for the imminent retirement of several older players of Betts, Walker, Sloane, Gibbs etc in a few years time).

If we dont trade Gibbs for one of those picks (presuming the opportunity arises i.e. Adelaide and Gibbs are still open to the trade) I will be furious. The kids have been protected enough now (moreso seeing as we would be using those picks to get in Kelly - who is an established mid - and more mids).

It is the perfect win/ win/ win scenario.

Something as simple as [Gibbs] to Adelaide, [McGovern/ Lever] to WCE/ Melbourne, and [Pick 10/12] to us.

We then get to play around with 4, 12, 39, 57, 76 etc, letting us work on a [4 + 12] for [Kelly + 23] type deal.

How does that conversation go?

SOS: We really want you to move now Bryce?
GIBBS: Nah. You wanted me last year and I'm happy now.
SOS: Of course......................next.

Where do you go now?

Are you seriously suggesting that Gibbs wouldnt want to head to Adelaide at the moment? He's in the twilight of his career and it's an opportunity to pinch a flag before he retires. He wanted to go last year, and I cant see any reason why he wouldnt be open to it this year either.

We cant force him to go, but I dont think we exactly need to be twisting his arm that much to get him to agree either.

Presumably Adelaide still want him, and presumably he is still open to being traded. He might not actively seek a trade this year (like he did last year) but Im very confident that if we tapped him on the shoulder and said 'We've got a deal in front of us; Adelaide are offering better money than we are at present - do you still want to go and chase a flag before you retire back home? the answer would be 'Yes'.

GIBBS: Nah. You wanted me last year and I'm happy now.

SOS: 'Adelaide have a 3 year/ X million dollar contract in front of you. Its more money than we are offering next year under your current contract which we frontloaded a few years back, and If I'm being frank its probably more than we will be offering you next year when your current contract expires. Its probably your last chance at a significant contract before the standard 1 year rolling deals for 30+ year old players kick in like what we have Simmo on.

You could leave next year as a free agent, but your contract value drops each year and its unlikely you'll get a 3 year deal as a 30+ year old. Thats the economic reality.

Long story short, you are going to be significantly better off financially if you agree to move.

You and I both know its also going to be your best chance at a flag before you retire.'

Let me reverse the bolded.

Gibbs has a contract.
We wanted Gibbs last year and stuck firm, but.....
If Gibbs doesn't go this year, you will be furious. :)

If he's re-worked his situation now and cast off the pull to go home, how are we impose ourselves upon him?
Put yourself in his shoes. If he doesn't want to go, he doesn't have to. It's very simple.
