That's what I always thought but I moved this year to a house with satellite and have all the channels so I'm not sure what the go is. I have IQ3 so maybe that's the difference.
how are you finding iq3 I've been reluctant to change as I've read it can be quite buggy.

Well this definitely isn't true for me as I have satellite Foxtel with an IQ2 and I get ten free to air channels

I have satellite Foxtel with an IQ2 and only get SBS/ABC. It's the same satellite! Are you sure that you aren't on cable, being in Melbourne? Or are you using an FTA tuner? I'm not trying to be argumentative, but your situation is not possible according to Foxtel info and website?? o_O If yours is true, I want some of it! :)

As I said before I suspect the programs are blocked out via the card and that goes on your address. I'm pretty sure FTA Chanel's are actually listed in the electronic guide, but they just don't work.

I saw the person install the satellite. Its the same situation at my parent's place which also gets FTA channels via satellite. They've had access to FTA for years and years through Foxtel

I live in Melbourne and they live in country Victoria

Not a fan. I had lots of issues but it it seems to have settled down, I tried to downgrade it to IQ2 but then I lose wi-fi connectivity.

It's fancy but I prefer the basic functionality of the IQ2 so I wouldn't change if I was you.

It's not as glitchy as it once was, and far superior to iq2, highly recommend if you have NBN. And yes, you get all the fta channels, locally.
If I didn't already get them this would be a big draw card.

What do you mean by lose wifi connectivity?

Sorry folks! I've rechecked the Foxtel website and the variant from what I said earlier is that SOME (not HD) channels are available in the "eastern states", not including Newcastle by satellite on IQ2, so this must include you, Scorpus. All other areas, obviously including Adeliade and Canberra, are considered "regional", and the FTA channels refuse to pay for retransmission of the channels to regional areas. Since it's one satellite, then perhaps Froggy is right and we need to find a way to "Hack" the Foxtel cards? ;)

Many apologies, but the rest of what I posted is right.

p.s. Scorpus, why aren't you on cable? Is that only for central Melbourne areas?

I live in the inner north but I don't have access to Telstra cable, only Optus cable. Foxtel is only available through Telstra cable so I need a satellite.

Back in the day I believe I would have had cable access to Optus' competing pay TV service (Optus Television) but that's obviously now shit and has no AFL. I'm just not in an area that got the dual cable roll-out (although at least I got one type of cable here, sure beats ADSL for internet).

Most of Melbourne's inner suburbs have at least one of the two types of cable, and many areas have both. My suburb received Optus only.

I didn't read very much good about the IQ3, particularly that they were beta-testing it via premature release. I agree entirely with you Elite, and when my original IQ2 blew up recently, I chose to replace it with another IQ2, free of chanrge.

Thanks for that. I'm interested in real-world experience with the IQ3 and might get one later when the beta-testing is finished.

My parents have an IQ3 and it's pretty good. I love the modern menus that don't look like a 240p relic from 2002; it's clearly been built for HD first. The content discovery tools are cool too but you'd need good internet to make full use of its capabilities. Obviously you get more tuners as well if you record a ton of stuff.

It's still a bit slow though, and for someone like me who only watches sport on Foxtel, it's just not worth the cost to upgrade.

I don't really have any issues with mine, very infrequently if so. But then the old box had the odd failure.

You need a good internet connection- I only upgraded both units after the NBN was available. Otherwise probably not worth it. Much larger storage, recording options, streaming. My only beef is that outside of the new release movies the on demand stuff is only SD.

I like Sanders , makes good chicken (not really) and makes good sense (really). Sometimes disagree, but he's one of my favourites on here. Speaking of favourites, where is King Elvis , Poland?

At this time of the year the swamp gets drained of most of the intelligent, interesting points of view leaving only the losers and bottom feeders for the most part.

Question isn't where have they gone, but why are you still here? :)

Happy New Year, Sanders! It's good to see that you have returned from your post-prandial torpor. ;)

I haven't upgraded home boxes from the Mystar HD. North Adelaide cottage has the IQ3 and I hate it. I like the replay from start feature and downloadable movies etc, but we get all that through Netflix, Stan and Presto.

One of my domestic duties is supermarket shopping - and I've noticed different days have different pricing ... but after a quick shop on Sunday, I think I'll avoid New Years Day in future as they appear to have a strange "they will probably still be drunk and not notice" system going :)
