Aren't we meant to be concerned for him, he's obviously afflicted with a mental illness. It's hard to know when I'm expected to want people to be held accountable for their actions or when I get to point the finger at a failing society or under resourced mental health system. Modern life is so complicated.

Easy to have a mental illness when you haven't slept in 9 days.

Need to tackle mental health by reducing reliance on drugs & more preventative lifestyle measures.

The Iceland article in the Backyard is a good example that we need to get smarter about addressing problems.

Poor eating habits & diet are a big factor.

If we invested more in eating, exercise & outside activities at schools, we would save significant mental health spending.

I can't see any do-gooders arguing for this guy.

There might be a few arguing that mental health needs more bloody focus but that's to prevent this tragedies.

And there's less crime than any point in history, isn't there? More jails and less investment in infrastructure seems wrong.

I believe it because for every one person that goes over the top there are more than 10 that show the same signs but refuse for whatever reason to give in.
It easy to find a back story after the fact than write a story before it happens.
Remember Stories about the how the system helps or stop action like this are not newsworthy. But that does not mean it happening.
There are people walking around daily working in high profile jobs that have been down some dark paths.

Harsher penalties and truth in sentencing for a start may actually

Of course there are more types of mental health & there will be those which there are little we can do about... but how about we address those which can be minimised...

There may be a huge time spent schools (but I would argue your definition of "huge"), but it's obviously not effective enough!

How much time is spent learning how to properly cook for yourself? How many kids leave school capable of cooking nutritious food? How many kids are not having a decent lunch everyday? Nutrition has an impact on so much for a healthy lifestyle, yet we don't do this as well as other countries.

It's not just about exercise at school, but outside as well... & it's not just about sport, but other activities to keep the mind & body active.

Do we want a heathier nation - both physically & mentally?

The ramifications of not addressing this early, is we pay more as community later.

It was interesting as it had real significant focus for me. On the addiction side as well as the life-skills training component. I have talked previously on the improvement of thoughts and self esteem which I was masking through addictions. I think its a great idea for our youths and parents as well.

As to whether this will prevent the more significant mental health issues that will need psychotropic medication I cant say. I still think there will be a place for patients to receive medication and while they are manageable then the responsibility falls upon them to continue to do so, otherwise facilities will need to be built.

we had Man Haron Monis a few years ago, the coach of our footy club being murdered by his own son in a drug induced psychosis and now this.

details are still emerging, but much like the previous incidents its sounds like a very similar falling through the cracks/could have been prevented situation.

now it might seem callous to you, but when would you prefer we start having this overdue conversation? Reasonable thoughts to air I would have thought.

that's fine, but were the reports of him laughing sitting in the street when he was picked up with no recollection of what happened debunked too or is that correct?

whether he was high at the time or not is irrelevant if he wasn't in a clear state of mind regardless.

My argument here is not to deny those with genuine mental health issues help, but the ones like this appalling person should NOT be on the streets.
