He might have gone to bed. He said he was sending a list to someone.

This will be a long wait if he has gone to sleep, just hope he has sent his choices through.

# 11 GWS GIANTS

AIDEN BONAR– DANDENONY STINGRAYS / MIDFIELDER & HF / 190CM

Had a fantastic end to the year and think he has dispelled any concerns around his knee. I don’t think he even had strapping on it in the last few games. Big bodied, explosive player who has fantastic speed testing 2.9s for 20m. Some really good games late in the year and through finals but probably had his best day on the G in the All Star Game. Showed off all best attributes. Powerful inside the contest and wins his own ball, competitive and made really good decisions exiting by hand and foot. His finishing is first class as well.

Wont be surprised if he goes as high around 4-7 on the day. The upside in him is really significant and people will liken him to a Bontempelli type midfielder / forward.

Who else - Jack Higgins. Suits what the GIANTS need but Bonar to good a talent to pass on.
BONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pick 13 . West Coast. Jack Higgins. Mid/Small Forward 178 cm 76 kg Oakleigh Charger.

It's hard to imagine what more Higgins could have done to put his name in front of the recruiters , in short he has a very impressive 2017 season.
After having a stella Under 18 Championship where he made the AA side he topped his TAC Cup season of winning the Morrish Medal for the Competitions F&B.

His production in front of goals where he bagged 29 games in his 13 games for the Chargers was also impressive.
This was on the back of a high production TAC season where he averaged 23.2 possession 2.3 goals and 5.1 tackles per game.
Higgins is a ball magnet and in capable of turning it on with devastating passages of play as he did in the first half of the Championships against WA and in another game where he kicked 5 goals.

He is a tough in and under player that is impactful.
He doesn't have a deep kick on him but its accurate enough and his vision in the short game is special.
His clearance work is high quality and his ability to drift forward and hit the score board is a real bonus.
The level of commitment and professionalism that he has shown and applied over the last two year in getting himself prepared to be drafted has been commented on by several in the know.

Why West Coast: West Coast need to both improve their midfield and also acquire some small forwards, Higgins fills both needs plus slot in as best available at this point in the draft.
So it was a pretty obvious choice IMO.

The Eagles would be thrilled to pick him up in the real deal and I am very happy to start this mock having picked up Higgins.

ringo1 Swans are up.

Having someone in there working their guts out is a great thing for a team. I think he works great with Kennedy and Darling to pressure the opposition defenders and be there at their feet when they need him. With the departure of some of the main movers through the midfield he can also provide assistance there. The kid is going to leave no stone unturned and that kind of attitude can be infectious.

Seems like a low bar for a first-rounder.

Is he the best midfielder available at that pick?

Are you serious? The guy would be ideal at West Coast. I am not sure what of the TAC and U18 champs you watched but Higgins has a skill set that the Eagles are missing and well worth pick 13.

I would be disappointed from the players available if did not take him at this spot.

Your previous input and your track record is that of criticising and sniping from the sides. So can you please elaborate who would you have taken and why?

How so?

I think my style would be more aptly described as full frontal.

There are a load of inside mids available in the 20’s and I would wait for our second round picks to address that need - with Constance and Clark taken, Higgins is both best available and a position of need.

You have dodged the question of who you would have taken instead of Higgins? Will you answer or are you just wanting an argument?

Meh. I'm not convinced.

I don't have a definitive view and I'm generally willing to defer to the "experts". But Higgins doesn't put any lead in my pencil.

You seem to be the one looking for the argument. I merely passed judgement on the player selected.

Pick 14 Sam Hayes Key Position Forward/Ruckman (Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro)
09/06/1999 | 202.7cm | 92.6kg

Hayes has had some dominate performances throughout the year, however as a young tall his consistent performances are yet to be strung together. He can play as a ruck option or as a tall forward which will give the Swans some much needed versatility. With Tippet looking like he is on the decline and the outer, the Swans are in need of a player that can play a similar role. Hayes to my mind can do both. The Swans could do with a deeper tall target and one that could go through the ruck as well.

With the Sydney game plan based around contested ball its important that their mids get first use and Hates is the best ruck prospect in the draft. Whilst it may take him some time to build his strength to AFL Level he has a number of strengths including Strong hands, tap work, is agile and can hit the scoreboard. The Swans attempted to make Sinclair into a ruck/forward but I feel that Hayes could do this better. He needs to work on his defensive pressure and strength in and around the contest. The Swans need to develop a player like this for the long term, especially on the tight SCG. There is no doubt that their are plenty of knocks on him but I think he is well worth the investment.

From what I saw at the championships, Higgins is hard working, skilled and provides good tackling pressure and has enough weapons to be more than vanilla. Given the eagles are fairly slow and not great at tackling, he'd be perfect. He'd also provide some important balance to a forwardline which often looked too tall in 2017 and a team which looked one-dimensional in 2017. Richmond proved this year that a good gameplan with a good forward setup is as important as having a gun midfield, and Higgins allows you to play that. Unless West Coast find some guys with some pressuring skills and pace they're going to continue to be beaten up by faster more mobile sides.

I find most times people call players vanilla its just a vague term for "I don't like this guy but can't specify why so I'm just going to vaguely say they're not quite good enough in general". Give me a specific aspect of the player's game that you don't like or wont work at AFL level, then we'll talk. If you read most of the good scout profiles on bigfooty they'll say something like "x does y which wont work at AFL level" or "x doesn't do or can't do y which other similar players can", they don't use the phrase vanilla that much.
