2017 Rookie Draft

Luckily we don't have to wait weeks anymore. The Preseason and Rookie drafts will be happening on Monday at 5pm AEST. Technically, I think we have a pick in the PSD. But I assume we'll pass, like everyone else. Which brings us to the rookie draft.

Someone will post a full draft order soon, but it follows the same order as yesterday. So we'll have the 5th pick in every round. Last year we went in with 6 rookies, and have retained 3 - Nyhuis, Duman and Strnadica. But I think we'll only have 5 this year, going in with an extra player on the senior list.

So that would leave us with picks #5 and #23.

So who's available? Lots of people. The AFL website has a list of 10 players here. Given the talk pre draft, there's probably a good chance that Angus Styles is our first pick. There was a little bit of whispering around Flynn Appleby and Joel Amartey, the latter probably unlikely given the two rucks we picked up. I know everyone will want Nathan Kreuger, but I don't see that happening personally.

I think a lot of clubs will be going for mature aged players or at least 19 year olds, with the depth dropping off now. I think we may follow suit, with someone like a Bailey Banfield. Or perhaps pick up a local small forward.

We'll no doubt take Bailey Griffiths just to give us some more ruck depth though

Couldn’t agree more. Those 2 would make perfect rookie pickups for mine. Probably about zero chance of either but.

Last year any club could have given up a rookie pick for Liam Ryan. This year Eagles had to give up pick 26 in the National draft to get him.

Played a few games for Euroa in the GVFL and by all accounts acquitted himself well. Would be a great story. Fair to say Wadeye has its challenges, but they sure do seem to love Freo up there:

Surely we go for a couple of skinny HBF's or skinny mids or skinny small forwards.

If we pick up another couple of ruckman the axles on the team bus will collapse.

We may not have the best list in the league but crickey we've got the heaviest.
