Of all our seniour players the only two not traded in that have shown loyalty since being drafted are Rich and Rockliff. Two players who have been in the top ten basically since walking in the door.
And the "logic" is to trade out one or both of these players for more young kids so we become less competetive and struggle to hold onto young players again.
The definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.
Rich has consistently signed on with little drama and while i don't think he's overpaid as some do, with the new CBA coming his contract will seem relatively cheap from next year.
Not sure the list needs a clean out as some are implying. Plenty of young talent that needs time to grow. When leppa left he said he finally got the list he wanted. I tend to think that its in pretty good shape with most on the list having some sort of future and purpose for being here. That includes role players/depth such as bewick bell and harwood that keep young kids honest about earning a spot.

Players with no future here (beyond their current contract).
Claye Beams
Ryan Harwood
Jarrad Jensen
Josh Clayton
Cian Hanley (R)
Tom Bell
Liam Dawson
Jack Frost

Players with a questionable future here (beyond their current contract):
Jonathan Freeman
Matthew Hammelmann (R) must be upgraded to the senior list or de-listed
Matt Eagles (R)
Rohan Bewick
Corey Lyons
Ryan Bastinac

Bloody hell. Give the young kid a chance. He's been with the club for 6 months.

In a season or 2 they should be able to hold their own. I'm not sure there's much need for a very short term fix. Especially with Walker, Close and Freeman on the list.
Its that "season or 2" that they need help, not when they can "hold their own."

Dawson is only in his 3rd year. Bit harsh. Most of those in the first list all have a role to play over the next 2 years while the young players develop. You don't need to be a star to contribute to the side positively.
Clayton and Jansen likely to be delisted along with someone else but that's hardly a clean out.

Some were suggesting we let him walk for the draft pick. Basically the same thing.
There are a couple conditions on this let him walk.

1. Rocky is actively looking for a new club and we're not shopping him.
2. The contract offer to Rocky is large enough to net a band one compo pick.

IMO briztoon (contracted to/age) -

Claye Beams- (2017/25) Has to have a really good year to get an extension.
Ryan Harwood- (2017/25) Ditto.
Jarrad Jensen- (2017/22) Gone, not up to AFL standard.
Josh Clayton- (2017/21) Must have a very good NEAFL year to even be considered.
Cian Hanley (R)- (2017/21) Show even a few glimpses and I think he gets one more year.
Tom Bell- (2018/25) Looking like a mistake, his disposal is atrocious and he plays like Jane.
Liam Dawson- (2018/21) I like him although needs to step up to best 22 next year.
Jack Frost- (2019/25) Oh dear.

Jonathan Freeman- (2017/23) Worth one more year, only turned 23 last month and a KPF.
Matthew Hammelmann (R) must be upgraded to the senior list or de-listed- (2017/21) I want him to be given a shot, has something IMO.
Matt Eagles (R)- (2017/27) Gone.
Rohan Bewick- (2018/27) Lucky he has one more year.
Corey Lyons- (2018/19) Still positive on this guy.
Ryan Bastinac- (2019/25) Oh dear.

The problem is obvious, the players 25 and over mentioned have had years (except Eagles) to have an impact at AFL level and while they show glimpses they display an extreme lack of consistency.

This is Cian Hanley's last year as a rookie, he would need to be upgraded to be kept. We don't have a list spot for him.

If we do not trade anyone out or in during the trade season, we need to free up four list spots for draft picks. I'm proposing C. Beams, Harwood, Jensen and Clayton are the four out of contract players that will be de-listed for these draft spots.

It's a choice between Freeman and Hammelmann. One of them has to go, we can't keep both simply because we don't have the list spots.

With Hammelmann, Hanley and Eagles gone from the Rookie list, that's 3 spots available in the rookie draft. I'd definitely be giving one spot to 19 year old Academy graduate Sam Copland as a Category B zone selection. And I am hoping Jack Payne from our academy slips through draft to the Rookie draft, as a second selection. Leaving us the first pick in the Rookie draft to either pick up another clubs delisted veteran or a draft slider.

Not necessarily. We could upgrade Hammelmann to the senior list and demote Freeman to the rookie list.

Re: Cain, is it possible to be delisted and selected again as a rookie?

I don't really have an opinion on this one at this stage so just putting it out there as I am interested in some points of view. If we could convince Jason Johannisen to join us, would you be willing to offer Port's pick in exchange for him let's say pick 10-12 as I think that is what it would take to complete a trade for him?

I'm definitely torn on this one. On the one hand we need to continue to add quality young talent and as many top 20 draft picks as we can to our list, however, at the same time we desperately need to surround our younger talent with some quality, experienced players and creative, quick, line breaking half back flankers can have a big, positive impact on sides in this day and age. Plus Johannisen is only 24. I'm sort of leaning towards no due to what it would take from a trade point of view, however, I think it would be a tough decision for the club to reject a talented 24 year old like Johannisen if he made it known he was keen on joining us.

Yes yes and yes. A 24 year old run and gun player with an absolute minimum of 6 years left in the game and a best case of maybe 8-10 years. He is a proven performer on the big stage and the exact type of player we need. He is a lot surer thing than an 18 year old draftee, and if we are not pushing for a top 4 spot by 2021-2023 something is drastically wrong.

Offer him 4 million over 5 years.

Does he genuinely bring more than just speed? Are his talent/skills inextricably tied to his speed? Is he a leader or potential leader, or just a good player with attributes that our team lacks?

Eagles likely gone.....coaches see him as a physical prescence in the reserves helping in terms of size, and his prospects have already been remarked on by the new regime. Clayton, on the other hand is highly regarded as borne out by his season so far.All the young players, are still in with a chance.

Yeah I get the feeling now that he has won a premiership and Norm Smith he is chasing a big pay day.

I think he is a pretty unique player, mainly due to his speed and his ability to break the lines. He sets up a fair few goals and he can kick them himself and he has no problem racking up the footy. He has a really good work rate as well.

Just had a look on footy wire and compared him to Adam Saad. Saad stacks up very favourably to Johaniisen considering he is 2 years younger and has a superior career disposal efficiency ie. 82% to 76%, if anything Saad takes the game on even more than Johaniisen, OOC end of next year FYI.

Unfortunately I called Saad a spud the last time I visited metricon. He won't come to the lions because of that.

He is 1 year off a free agent
Not worth a first round pick.
Mid 20s maybe, doubt he's coming here anyway. Were 1-2 years away from being able to recruit someone we actually want

I rate Saad. Extreme pace and a very accurate kick when going full tilt which is a rare combination. Needs to get more of the ball though but I can't see him leaving the Suns.

I think a few of you guys should remember Jack Crisp with 6 rounds to go a few years ago, was unbackable to be cut and he turned it around and is forging a pretty decent career for himself. Way too early to be talking about delistings and especially on first year players.

There was something strange going on there. His reserves form was solid. Turned out he had one foot in the door at Essendon at the end of the season. Whether or not we didn't rate him or knew he was on the way out it's hard to tell.
