In my humble opinion you dont recruit mature aged players to play in the 2's, so they are there for reason. What that is? I am not the coach, but from seeing the games it's my opinion that fagan believes the kids offer more growth and enthusiasm or effort then the likes of bastinac, bell, walker and frost or they would be playing.

Edit: I should point out that fagan didn't recruit bell walker bastinac or frost ( cause frost was recruited by schwab) so it doesn't confuse anyone. Even though it's OBVIOUS.

This is kind of true, though the process may go something like this. Early in the season when the grounds are dryer and faster the youth we need to get to 50+ games into asap will get a good long run at having a look at each other and gelling a bit. As they become run down, the grounds get softer and games become more of a slog they will be rested more and more and those bigger, older bodies will fill the breach. We can't just play youth all the time as they will blow up, and I think this is the last chance saloon for those mentioned above so they just have to live with it.

As much as I think your right in the case of walker I find it hard to believe fagan would be playing kids over bell, bastinac and frost (especially considering he was a targeted recruit) if these guys were performing at afl level, which they should be, considering the terms of the deals these guys are on. I think it's unfortunate that the contracts aren't or weren't performance based. Plus I would forsee a bleak future for fagan if he chose to play kids over mature bodies who were performing (loosing big v competitive loss or win)

This was sort of answered, "On the Couch" in relation to Carlton...Spreading the experience players in both the Magoos and Seniors to provide on field leadership. The point was that the young players learn their craft in both divisions and are not getting bullied or pushed around by stronger bodied opposition..The experience players going in and flying the flag..As they were saying that I related this back to us on Sunday and Nick Robertson standing over and roughing up Sydney's marque player...that spoke volumes..

Issue I had wasn't the recruitment of Bastinac or Bell. Both were senior bodies willing to come here, and provide protection for the younger guys.

The issue I had was how heavily we overpaid in terms of draft picks. Both were traded for picks around the end of first round, which even at the time, was not a reasonable price. It was overpaying clubs to get them out - Bell because he wanted to come here, and we can't say no to someone who wants to come here; Bastinac because we stated we'd refuse to trade Aish without a mature player, and we couldn't lose face. We overpaid for both - at the time, and in hindsight.

The big concern I have is the motivation behind these trades. To me, the motivation for the trades was to sell hope, save face, and present ourselves as a destination. Improving our list long-term doesn't seem to have been a consideration - short term, maybe, long term, absolutely not. At the time of recruitment, both would've been fringe best 22 in a finals bound team. Basti wasn't even in North's 22 when we paid a late first rounder for him.

Bastinac wasn't traded just for a late first round pick. We've been over this quite a few times.

And IIRC Bell was about pick 41 (net).

I never knew but apparently this system of trading is called Rusing. He supplies his own KY jelly and knee pads.

Do you have any idea of how the academy points bidding system works?

Facts are fake news after all.

I can understand the frustrations that certain posters feel. All though this maybe an unpopular veiw it needs to be address. Though some posters may not accurately or factually state the basis for their veiw points to the level that some require, it does not make their veiw any less valuable then the rest of us. In certain circumstances the facts are not important to the essence of their veiw, if it relates to a more broader issues. Truth is if everyone had to state or provide factual evidence to submit a veiw point on a public thread board about any topic it might just evolve into a news paper article or become so long and drawn out no one participates. We have the ability to agree or disagree and thats fine but pulling apart or pointing out minor inaccuracies, which don't effect the essence or intended veiw is just self indulgent and goes against what forums like this were intened for, to be inclusive and bring together a group of people who share the same passion. The Brisbane Lions. Just an opinion

My opinion is Leigh Mathews is the worst coach ever to grace the hallowed turf of Gabba.
Mate I don't give a fact about facs. It's my opinion and I don't need to back it up cause I'm on a public forum and the basis for my opinion is just as valuable as yourars.

There's a difference between not getting all the facts and completely ignoring them. Presenting a view or opinion that is completely ignorant of facts or states a fact completely incorrectly to try to support that view rightly opens you up to be challenged or criticised. There's nothing wrong with putting out an opinion, and nothing wrong with people questioning it either, that tends to be what happens when opinions get put out there. Putting one out there and using incorrect facts to try to back it up is wrong however and should absolutely be called out.

Hallelujah, thankfully someone finally said it!

Sorry, it wasn't a late first rounder, it was a late first rounder and some pick swaps. Oh how terrible of me.

Bastinac, pick 38, pick 40, plus a future year 3rd rounder
for
Pick 17, pick 26.

All picks got push back. Yes, pick 17 became pick 21 in the draft. Was still a late first rounder.
