Now you lost me with your superior witticism. It's ok to say "too edgy for classical".![]()
Yep it was 2013 those guys left, we have reset and it is time for the club and supporter Base to stop pointing at it as the source of all our woes.
We had issues before they all left and some of those still exist (training base).
But as a whole we are a lot stronger and the key positions have been filled. We are a better (and younger) side than we have been for the last couple of years. We are positioned to take a step off the bottom next year, how big a step we take will rely on a bit of luck. But one thing we can be confident of is that we CAN develop the players now.
With the move to less restrictions on free agency the onus will be how well the club is run at a particular point in time. For the first time in a long long time I feel we are being well run.
We are always going to suffer a geographical disadvantage, that's life. Nothing we can do about it except develop the local juniors and make the academy the source of the majority of our draftees. This will take years, but is the best long term solution for us.
In short there is no point looking to the past and bitching about it, yes we can learn from the plethora of mistakes made in recruitment and welfare and coaching and venues etc.. But the only way forward is looking to the future and our future prospects don't look that bad.

My eldest grandson goes to Brisbane State High and the AFL programis a bit of a joke, it's all union, union, union then cricket, cricket, cricket. Would take decades to change that mindset if ever.
Yeah read about this a few years ago one night when I couldn't sleep. Interesting read. Looking back at some of the state carnivals QLD was actually one of the stronger States as well.Did some reading up on the history of AFL in QLD and apparently it was the dominant code in the 1880's until this in 1887
In 1887, one of the most significant events in the history of the code occurred at this time. Independent Schools headmasters voted by 1 vote to adopt rugby football. The decision was influenced by the recent creation of a Queensland-based governing body to govern rugby, and the majority of councillors objected on the basis that the reference of "Victorian" in the name of the sport did not represent the interests of Queenslanders. This dealt a significant blow to the sport and advantage to rugby union.
Also came across the Barassi line -dividing line between AFL and Union/League - which I found very interesting although not sure how accurate it is

Yes very interesting read. Even in the 1950's Australian Football rivalled rugby league as the premier football code in Brisbane. A little known fact is that two former leading Queensland Rugby League identities were closely involved with the Sandgate Hawks.Ron McAuliffe, the longest serving QRL Chairman and NRL powerbroker, was president of the Hawks in 1948 and Dick "Tosser" Turner, the godfather of Maroons State of Origin teams, was a Sandgate player and committeeman in the 1950's. Time to get Afl in Brisbane back on track and wrestle back the power I say. Suggestions welcome on how to achieve this?Keep in mind the AFL is quite wealthy and have been bold with the GWS venture.Did some reading up on the history of AFL in QLD and apparently it was the dominant code in the 1880's until this in 1887

I hear what you say Winged and agree with most of what you say. However, just because we produce a small % AFL standard players out of QLD doesn't solve our problems with building a successful list. For me, professional administration/coach's/facilities/culture have more to do with having players all over the country who want to come play for us. That's the key. If you look at Melbourne Storm in the NRL, how many local players out of Melbourne do they have listed yet are one of the most respected, successful clubs in the competition. Everything they do is professional. The % of players who would not consider playing for them is extremely low compared to other clubs. Duplicate that & we are going to be in the top half of the competition for many years because players will WANT to come play for the Lions. (unlike what's happened in recent times.)
From memory we were interested in Savage when he was looking to leave Hawthorn for more opportunity a few years back. I think he'd be a handy addition. Would strengthen the depth of our list and provide us with another fast and skilful player.Shane Savage is of interest to the Lions who have met his manager Hazell. Apparently, he had some trouble settling at St.Kilda and would be reluctant to move again but we've signalled our interest and have a plan none the less.

There's a thread on the Barassi Line on the Footy Industry board, FYI.
Very interesting!
I am not much of a Historian, but, if only it was called the Afl back then?
Might have still been League trying to establish itself in Qld.Would have made a difference for sure
Depends on your definition of a successful trade but I think Stef Martin, Moloney and Staker worked out alright for us. Beams and Christensen have had their fair share of injury troubles but whilst on the park they've been good additions. I don't think Bastinac has been all that bad either.I don't think we've had any success reading for guys besides M.Robbo in the last few years.
Christensen can't get on the park.
D.Beams has been a tick but how much longer will his body hold on for?
Since 2009 it's been a never ending list of trades that haven't worked out for us. Commit to the draft. If they come cheaply grab em but I wouldn't want to be giving up too much for some mature age guys.

Moloney and staker put bandaids over serious list issues. Staker as well played a few good patches but in the long run did either take our list forward? Nope. I think if we could add Charlie Cameron and Shane Savage in the trade period and still go to the draft with multiple picks inside the first round we'd be well placed to be far more competitive next year than we have been over the past few years.
Shane Savage has played 119 games, has finals experience including a grand final appearance, and he's only 26 so I think we could get 4-5 good years out of him. He'd provide us with another big bodied, experienced player and his main strengths are his line breaking ability and foot skills which are two things that would complement the game plan that Fagan is trying to implement. At worst he improves our depth a fair bit. I see him as a superior player to the likes of Bewick, Bell ect. who are our current mature aged depth options. Savage is OOC and I don't think he'd cost much at the trade table. We'd probably have to conjure up a 3rd rounder for him.
Charlie Cameron is 23, played 66 games, has finals experience and fills a major need as a quick, line breaking wing/small forward who prides himself on applying defensive pressure. Fagan has highlighted the need to add a small forward to our list and Dayne Beams has stated we need to add talent in that 23-25 age bracket so Cameron would be the perfect fit.
A possible 2018 best 22 if we added those guys and kept Rockliff-
B Gardiner Andrews Witherden
HB Rich McStay Mayes
C Savage Rockliff Christensen
HF McCluggage Hipwood Taylor
F Cameron Schache Lester
R Martin Beams Zorko
I Robinson Robertson Cutler Berry
Players next in line(23-30) Cox, Bastinac, Mathieson, Walker, Skinner, Keays, Smith, Bewick.
That is a talented group of 30 players and I think we could push for 8 or so wins in 2018, possibly even more.

Bastinac is currently on a good patch of form so the jury is still out. Both burton and Gresham went around the pick we traded for him both of whom I'd take in a heartbeat over him.
Stef I agree great pickup.
Compare our drafting to our trading. Damnn id back our recruiters with picks 9 times out of 10. Stick to the draft, no shortcuts this time. We're finally in a promising position another good draft and we're set for 10 years. Then we can start looking at bringing in the extra pieces of the puzzle through trading.
We would have had to of used that pick to match the Hipwood bid though...Moloney and staker put bandaids over serious list issues. Staker as well played a few good patches but in the long run did either take our list forward? Nope. Moloney also had what, one or two good years?
