Surley the AFL block the trade, no way they let Port pay more for Rockliff just so we take on Lobbe's contract. There would be a huge uproar.

But if it works thats absolutely genious, Rockliff would be laughing all the way to the bank as well

Could the AFL prove this deal happened? Maybe that’s just market value for Rocky?

Thats the main question I guess, the good thing is that its in Ports interest, it doesn't matter whether we have pick 2 or 19, they get pushed back 1 pick either way.

Intresting to see how the AFL would view that.

Port's offer would come Friday whereas the earliest we could signal our intentions to take Lobbe publicly is Monday. If Port is able to offer a larger sum to Rockliff on the unestablished condition we trade something for Lobbe, there's not really any way the AFL can see anything untoward there, unless there offer simply wouldn't be possible without Lobbe leaving. However with Trengove, Ah Chee and Impey all possibly leaving and the increase in the cap that would seem unlikely. I'd say worst case from AFL is it raises some eyebrows and means they tell us to not ask for a priority pick any time in the next decade.

Considering free agency opens before trade week, we should just agree to this speculated arrangement then not trade for Lobbe after Rockliff signs with Port, landing us the compo pick regardless of Lobbe.

"Sorry Kochie, we had our fingers crossed"

Martin will be 31 next month...

Exactly, Martin is getting no younger, he isn't going anywhere, Archie and Oscar are still developing, Lobbe gives us the experience and backup that we need now. Remember he was Ports #1 ruck until they AA ruck came back from a years suspension.

Smart move in my opinion.

A move for Lobbe would mean our ruck depth consists of: Martin, Smith, McInerney & Lobbe - with Walker as the "break in-case of emergency" fallback.

This seems excessive, so why would we do it?
  • Martin will get moved
  • NBA-type salary dump - we take a bad contract (Lobbe has two years to run on a healthy deal) in exchange for a juicy asset. In this case the asset would be an inflated compensation pick for Rockliff. Worth remembering Port doesn't have a first round pick so they have nothing to lose in terms of draft capital
  • We are going to reinvent the game by stacking our team with 22 195+ cm players and play keepings off

Having four rucks is/was usually viewed as pretty standard:
  1. Senior ruck
  2. Backup ruck
  3. Developmental ruck
  4. Rookie lottery ticket ruck
Funnily enough a Lobbe-style player would fit that to a tee - Martin; Lobbe; Smith; McInernary. Not too long ago we had Leuenberger; West & Martin; Smith. We're actually running fewer rucks than normal at the moment.

I'd dispute that given we've already seen Lever confirming pay rates on his offer from Melbourne, Geelong and Ablett both confirming they're interested in a trade, Kennedy nominating Carlton, and so on.

So Port are going to give Rockliff a mil a year ?

If the rumours are true about what Lobbe was earning per year it would probably mean they could stick $80k-$100k extra per year on Rockliff's contract to around $800k and then pocket the remaining $400k or so from what he would have been paid in 2019.

Yeah, I was more suggesting in that scenario at which point it really becomes difficult to establish anything.

I don't think you can 4 rucks. They need time to develop. We'd have 3 rucks in the reserves and it'll slow down Archie and Oscars development.

If we got Lobbe for free I'd trade Stef for any second round pick and hope Archie or Oscar develop into an AFL standard ruckman by 2020

Would hate to lose Stef but if we did get Lobbe I think this would be the pragmatic approach.

Don't we have to take us his wage though ?

Yeah, but I can't envision us having any issue covering that. Just that Port can give themselves a lot of breathing room in their cap and they get their man. Issue I think comes in list balance with 4 rucks but as said by others it might mean one ruck we have gets jettisoned in some way.

Hmm but Archie should be pushing for senior ruck status not developmental ruck - he is coming into a contract year.

Also worth remembering we will have Ballenden on the books too, and depending on who you ask he projects best as a ruck.

I'd also argue the game has changed since 2013 and no team carries two rucks in the best 22. Hell, Shaun Grigg is a premiership back-up ruckman

Wont happen anyway, why would Port give a **** about us when they will just offload lobbe to GWS

Have the Giants been linked to Lobbe? I guess that's a chance, though maybe there a chance they might not have the space to cover whatever Lobbe will be entitled to for his remaining 2 years, as well as having to pay out Mumford his last year. Unless someone else takes Mumford but I can't see that happening.

Because GWS wouldn't want his salary. Port want to dump as much of his salary as possible.

Lobbe signed his current four year deal on the back of a season where he was very influential in helping Port get within a kick of making the Grand Final. He'd be on a sizeable contract.

If Martin decides he wants to go back to Melbourne we can also cover his contract for a better draft pick. While we have youngsters I think it would be great if we can become a salary dump for opposition clubs in return for better than expected draft pick returns.

Could be for a bunch of reasons. We could be the only club with the cap space and inclination to cover Lobbe's full salary. It could also remove any chance of the Lions matching a bid for Rockliff.

I still don't think it will happen but it is more than just a theoretical possibility IMO.
