Not necessarily, Fyfe was taken with pick 20, Sloane with pick 44, Danger with pick 10, JPK with pick 40 and then traded for a bunch of late picks. For every top midfielder that was taken with pick 3 there's another one who was taken later in the draft.
Yeh you are right! In the sense outside of the top 5 I'd say it really is pot luck who you end up with. Look at all those picks, they're all well beyond 7. We already have thirteen or whatever and would be equally like to nail a star with that pick then 7 or 8. Kerr and Shuey were 18 for example.
It's a game of probability. I don't think a pick 7 or 8 nets you a gun player at a high enough probability (especially considering we have a pick 13) to trade out a known A grade wingmen who is just heading into his prime. For every Fyfe taken at 20 there are 10-20 Tom Swifts. I would think pick 7 is quite likely to score you a 100-200 game pretty good player (probability wise) and I wouldn't trade out Gaff for that. Just too big a risk
