Just reading of the AFL's Trade Talk updating article:

Highlights a lack of creativity from our list management team to not even consider the possibilities. Either that or over-rating Gaff's potential to impact games, and how easily or not that it might be replaced.

Yes, not trading out very good players is a sign of lack of creativity. Because creative clubs do that, do they? Like Melbourne when it traded out everyone all those years ago.

Why do u think saints want gaff? Issue is really that you don’t rate gaff so maybe it’s you who lacks creativity.

This article is a little overdone but i certainly agree with the whats its trying to illustrate, that west coast never court, headhunt, chase or make public offers to available talent.

It almost smacks of arrogance by us, that unless someone puts their hand up to come to us, we rarely bother. Certainly, the author is right to question why Fremantle is in the box seat and the eagles arent even in the frame for a lot of these deals. Nathan Wilson we should definitely be going hard at IMO, and if Jesse Hogan wants to come home to WA next year we should really be getting far more proactive.

This isn't to say the club does nothing during trade period, but in terms of public effort we seem to exhibit some apathy.

I am happy for him to stay but i do hope the club has sat down with him and asked him if he plans on sticking around past next year and if not how would he feel going this year?

And if he says he hasn’t made a decision and wants to explore free agency to see his worth and not leave this year (which is what I would do)?

Can anyone name an instance of a club actively shopping a player and it working out well for that club?

I can think of a few examples of it working out well for the player, and for his new club (e.g. McEvoy, Caddy) but not so much for the selling club.

It's funny cause few years ago we got sick of interstate players leaving because they were homesick and now we want to push one of our best players out even tho he seems happy in wa. I wouldn't trade unless it was a ****ing good deal however, I wouldn't push him out for it. That's how you piss off a playing group.

Hope some of you realise how ironic you are. All happy to get rid of Pridda ( his hack kicks out of the centre going straight to the opposition are disgraceful ) Which is pretty much what Richmond did the entire Grand final, just got the luck in the game and/all their man in front. I have stated before , Gaff to me is one of the biggest problems with our midfield. Not explosive, can't win his own ball ( rarely ) doesn't tackle ( rarely ) doesn't kick goals ( rarely ) not quick , terribly one sided, doesn't have a penetrative kick. Has great endurance which allows him to accumulate high possessions.
We need to rebuild our midfield, we would be negligent as a club not to entertain or avenues to achieve that.

Ports trading plans could either be a complete masterstroke next season or complety back fire on them. They have a very complex entire group and bringing in 3 players that are good players on their day but can also be dead set average.

What's to be gained in playing out our trading intentions in the public arena save for appeasing some fans who assume we are doing nothing? The Sam Mitchell trade is proof that we have the wheels turning behind closed doors. So is the Redden trade and the Yeo trade..

I couldn't care less about us signalling our trade intentions via media, as long as we get our man.

Club has been pretty clear that we want an A grade midfielder, Wilson isn't one, nor is Hogan (a player who we have publicly said we'd be interested in if he wants to return).

Foster is right up there with Hagdorn in terms of unreadability.

"Since the Judd/Kennedy trade the only players the Eagles have traded in are"... then goes on to list about a dozen guys. Missed Dalziell though. And Ellis. And Giles.

Then suggests we should be chasing Stringer, who's publicly said he's not leaving Vic for family reasons, and some other guys who are zero chance of moving west.

It's basically written as a particularly whingy post in this very thread.

I'm not sure Fremantle's ability to be active in the trade period and bring in established players is a yardstick we should aspire to. Sure, exciting for message boards, but much more an example of 'what not to do' rather than a blueprint for success.

Stoked Gaff and the club have come to this position. With good options on all sides of this equation he and the club could easily have gone their separate ways. The fact they haven't tells me there's a healthy two way commitment. Bodes well for a long career in the jumper which is exactly what we need if we are to get on top of the shit full state of other elements of our midfield.
