Why do u think saints want gaff?
As a replacement for Montagna, as they already have several inside mids (Ross, Steven), and young and upcoming talent in Steele, Billings and Dunstan.
Issue is really that you don’t rate gaff so maybe it’s you who lacks creativity.
Well, no, he's probably our second best midfielder behind Shuey. He racks them up, and on a good day he's great at delivering inside 50. But that's a problem for us. That guy's our second best mid. He's got no right foot, he barely tackles, he barely breaks a tackle, or evades a player.

I've stated this in previous posts that what Gaff is is a really good winger, but he's also just a winger. He doesn't go forward and provide a small target, he doesn't go back and provide rebound, and he's generally not a contested mid, so Gaff is just a link-man. How many teams are running top level pure wingers? I've got Scully at GWS, Hunter at the Dogs and 2 others I mentioned last time that I can't remember now. The thing is, a winger is not what you build your footy team around.

Gaff mashes 17km a game but is often too gassed to make a good pass to the tall fowards, or too gassed to get back in a tackling position. He's been hampered by the slowness of other mids who should be the ones receiving from him to make that forward pass, or covering for him so there's no burn on a turnover. So maybe Gaff is more useful to us next year without Priddis/Mitchell. But maybe he's also cream who might be worth a top ten pick and a player to the right club with some creative negotiation.

It's funny cause few years ago we got sick of interstate players leaving because they were homesick and now we want to push one of our best players out even tho he seems happy in wa. I wouldn't trade unless it was a ******* good deal however, I wouldn't push him out for it. That's how you piss off a playing group.
That's exactly it. These blokes are mature enough to know it is trade period and things get discussed, but if you have your head in the sand none of the ****ing good deals get presented or negotiated.

Yes, not trading out very good players is a sign of lack of creativity. Because creative clubs do that, do they? Like Melbourne when it traded out everyone all those years ago.

I always read your posts out in Calimeros voice.

What're everyone's thoughts on Hartung for some extra speed? Is there any scope of him becoming a good player or is he doomed to become another masten?

With the hawks interested in Impey, what would you guys think of something like

Hawks give up Hartung, get Impey.
Port give up Impey and Ah Chee, get our pick 30.
West coast give up pick 30, get Ah CHee and Hartung

No to pick 30 pick 48 for both is more likely but Port will cry foul.

These are fringe players.

Why would we pickup hartung?
Gaffs a better player all round.

For several reasons.

To supplement Gaff leaving this year or next.

Gaff has stated he's looking forward to playing more midfield now Priddis and Mitch have retired. That sounds like centre square ao we need anorher winger.

We lack pace.

It improves the team adds depth.

Hawks do not have a lot of depth.
Hawks lack outside run and speed
Hawks are very willing to let Hartung go...

I wouldn't be expecting him to add anything to the team if a club that knows a player is more than willing to let him ship off

That article, like all of Brendan Foster's work, is more like whinging from a frustrated fan. If I want to read that I have Bigfooty.

He rattles off that we've only traded in 7-8 guys since the Judd trade...players who made up about a 3rd of our best 22 last year...

'Get that bloke! He's great!' is really easy this time of the year, but ultimately 90% of the players that move clubs come with baggage - either a knock on their game, their lifestyle or their overall commitment to their club (sometimes, all 3). You don't just go out and get an 'A Grade Midfielder', unless one lands in your lap ala Paddy Dangerfield.

The only one I would feel disappointed on would be Nathan Wilson - but he's under contract and has links at Freo - considering the complete lack of attempting to retain him from GWS, I think this was sorted between the 2 clubs for family reasons - the guy was never 'on the market'.

Good that Ah Chee has come out and said "make me an Eagle". Wants to leave and play here.
The more I think of it the more I like it, could be the surprise packet for next year.
I am sure if he does come here and get game time he will give it everything to put it up Port for not playing him.

So how is it known that we never court, headhunt and chase a player if it’s not made public?

I suppose what i am suggesting is when was the last time you ever read or saw something like this:

"West Coast set to offer out of contract (opposition) player 5 year deal" etc

I cant remember anything off the top of my head. In fact, we would have to be one of the very few clubs, if not the only one, that i cannot remember having made a public approach for a players services. If i am wrong, i stand corrected.
