I'd trade McGovern to Adelaide for picks 10 and 16.
It would hurt my soul, but it's a smart move for our footy club. (It basically guarantees Higgins AND Clark too).

Plus whoever we use 13 on.

We would also likely get their 2nd for our 3rd.

So a Higgins 10 , Clarke 13, Allan or OBrien 16, Warple 30, Kelly 36 and Ah chee.

Thats how you inject top end midfield talent into the list and only give up one quality player.

But this will never happen because we are too conservative.

Where did pick 36 come from

Or have the belief we are in premiership contention, in which case the asset used to garner picks 10 and 16 is more valuable to the club on the field in 2018 as opposed to the development time required for the players taken with those picks.

I think people need to realise that trading Gov would be like trading Nic Nat - he's so essential to our structures that without him, it would basically fall apart.
Actually trading nn is what we should have done when gws came in - they would have given us the midfield we needed to win a flag.

Kevin sheedy would gave sold the farm for him

Or we could keep Nic and fix our development and drafting (i.e. replacing Rohan O'Brien).

IIRC Nic Nat and Priddis were both enquired about at the time. They would've sold the farm to us for both of them and our team would be massively different now because of it. But that's hindsight at its finest.

Whats troubling is our reticence to take a risk. To break out of the midfield on the ladder we have to be prepared to give up something. If speed, contested ball winning, long accurate kicking and tackling pressure are the key to the modern game (i.e last 5 years) and we want to combine that with contested/intercept marking then we should shed players that don't have those skills or do not project capability to develop them.

I know we've laboured the point, but Gaff/Masten are our wingers and project none of these skills. They are endurance athletes who get the ball in space and link play. They aren't particularly quick, they don't tackle, they cant kick more than 45m and they don't tackle (or are not encouraged to tackle). Therefore move them on for the best price you can and recruit players who have some of these skills.

Buy low, sell high.

This trade period is unbearably slow even by the usual trade period standards.

It's been going almost three full days, trade radio has somehow been running 11 hours a day for the last week and a half, and they basically have nothing to talk about. There's been one and a half free agent signings and that's it.

It's maddening.

I completely agree on Lever and posted something in another thread about it and the reaction being ridiculous. That said, I think we have very few genuine A grade players with a pretty big drop off to serviceable players. I wouldn't be trading one of our A graders for potential, even if that potential covers a need. McGovern is the full package, can play multiple positions with very few, if any limitations. I don't see it as a step forward trading him for two mid/late first round picks. It could be, if they both work out being guns but if they end up being duds, we go backwards. Some may take that risk, I wouldn't.

KP backs is one area we have covered. Especially intercept marking tall backs.

Gov is high value but not indispensable, he's also carried a dodgy shoulder for several years in a row.

Playing this soft zone defense hasnt worked IMO and needs to change. Will Gov still play as well if not playing so loose in defence?

The midfield engine room wins games of football and we currenly have a four cylinder diesel.

Like I said the club is simply too conservative to make hard calls and take a risk or two to improve.

Trade gov and play 4 to 5 under 30 gamers in the middle. And you thought this board was salty this year about finishing 7th... Next year would be a hoot.
We doubled down on immediate success (playing Priddis and Mitchell near every game, Petrie, LeCras, etc.) and finished 8th on the ladder. Context is pretty important.

Finishing 13th with a young squad > finishing 8th with a "premiership list"
