I’m not fussed on anyone else we’re losing this off-season but I think Arch is the one who could really come back to bite us. In a few years’ time you’ll be wondering how he struggled to get a game at Port (I know I am) and how the hell you got him so cheaply. Enjoy.

Except for Ah Chee...who we just traded in about 10 mins ago.......and who we are talking about..

The post I was answering asked whether Cummings was the last player we got from Port.

He was. And the first.

I'm satisfied with that deal. We keep 3 picks inside the top 50 this year and even get to use 67. Next year I'm sure we can find a way to trade our way into the third round again.

If the draft is deeper next year then having two 4th rounders would be better than having two 4th rounders this year.
how come every year its always 'next years draft is deeper'. The same thing was said last year and when August comes around again its like the draft isnt very deep this year, its bollocks, a declaration made by some muppet trying to gets its voice heard

No it can't. Darling had fallen outside of the 1st round. That's the point. Any other late first round pick still had the chance of being picked up in the first round. Darling didn't. The 1st round had ended when he got picked.

The poster who said your original post was good was spot on. Just not 100% correct.

An updated post.

WCE 2nd round selections for the last decade:

2007
Pick 20 - Tony Notte. 2 games (delisted)
Pick 22 - Scott Selwood. 135 games at WC (traded)

2008
Pick 20 - Tom Swift. 34 games (retired)

2009
Pick 22 - Gerrick Weedon. 1 game (delisted)
Pick 23 - Koby Stevens. 11 games at WC (traded)

2010
Pick 29 - Scott Lycett. 50 games

2011*
Picks 23 and 28 were first round and netted Newman (2 games, delisted) and Mccines (11 games, rookied)

2012*
Our first pick was start of the 3rd round at 45 Brant Collage

2013
Pick 31 - Malcolm Carpany. 7 games

2014
Pick 32 - Tom Lamb. 1 game.

2015
Pick 28 - Luke Partington. 6 games.
Pick 36 - Tom Cole. 6 games.

2016
Pick 37 - Josh Rotham. 0 games.

Not a single blue chip player or even high level contributor on the list. That's not to say recent picks won't come good, but WC history with 2nd round selections is terrible.

Consider both the rate of attrition, so players still at the club and average numbers of games played, even if you do include Darling, the only high quality (B or above) player on that list.

EDIT: if you want, feel free to include 2010 pick 26 Jack Darling (151 games), who was a priority selection.

There is a bit of science involved. They rank the kids with a points system. This year the ranking of 130 point players started dropping away after pick 30. Next years crop allegedly doesnt drop off until close to 50 kids.

But it is a tad subjective fir sure.

Is it a good deal? I thought next year's draft is deep AF?

Don't really get why it was next year's picks instead of this year's since next year's draft is supposed to be better... Kind of an odd decision, isn't it? o_O
I hope we can move away from cohort descriptions like this soon. It just doesn't give any indication of the makeup of the draft, failing to illustrate how much top-end talent there is, how many players will likely be taken, anything like that. Would rather an assessment on the staggered drop-offs in bands of talent, which is something we can't know at all fully yet. Furthermore what does this mean for our trade? If we want to call next year a 'deep draft' then doesn't that mean we've made the right choice in downgrading next year rather than this? This way of thinking means we are more likely to grab someone who has a shot at it in next year's 4th round (oh do deep!!!!) than this year's, right?

To me it likely speaks to our identification of a couple of players who we are very interested in, who are fitting for a third-round pick this year. Obviously the club understands this bearing better than us. Anyhow sorry for the lil rant it's just agitating to have banner titles for drafts which aren't used critically This isn't tailored for you, you'll hear Matthew Lloyd or someone say the same things and you'll read it all over the place and it just becomes senseless.

Bless you.

Starcavich is a reach in the early to mid second round as is Ryan and Kelly IMO. They are very late seconds to third round picks.

Spargo, OBrien, Worples are better second round options......Oscar Allen may still be around at 25.

I'd be astounded and gratified if we could take O'Brien with a pick in the 20s. Worpel has been mentioned a lot as a possibility, but I'm more enthused by Spargo and Petruccelle, because we need pace.
