Team Mgmt. 2018 & 2019 team selections, injuries and availability

The trend i'm seeing is that we're competitive against teams who play a traditional tall spine structure but we get flogged by teams who play small (Dogs, Pies, Tigers).
Teams who play small are generally fitter and outnumber us at contests.
This makes it easy to transition with handballs, slicing through us.
We don't have to copy this game-plan as our list has other strengths which wouldn't suit it anyhow.
You do on the other hand, have to counter it.
McKenna back in will help, but I would love to see someone like Kobe Mutch come in for Green.
We need clean users who are fit and can help us outnumber the opposition on transition.
A more tidy Dylan Clarke would help.
An in form Colyer wouldn't go astray.

But something has to change against these teams.

One thing that we are struggling at is reading the next play. On so many occasions yesterday we would go to the player with the ball but it was so obvious it was about to be handballed to a better user or mid.

Smith was the only play that didn’t get sucked in. Twice in the midfield where cox had the ball we had a few player go to him but it was clear as day he was about to start a handball chain.

Also our tackling is woeful opposition always get the handball off.

There are a lot of emotional comments or angry comments swirling around and being written but in some ways right now it is the result we may have to learn to accept to a degree. Now we all hate losing to the Pies and I hate it even worse and as much as anyone when we do not have real red hot go so here are my current thoughts.

First up we are seeing our main avenue to goal way out of form in all areas of the game. Most of us would have expected Daniher to at least hold ground and be a 3 to 5 goal forward most weeks. It has not gone that way and not only is he not kicking goals he is also been very poor as far as contested marking goes with him not even winning one contested situation on Wednesday. This creates huge issue as currently every time we have to go to Joe in a contested situation it is pretty much a turn over. I have no answers to how he finds form other than saying he just has to lead up at the footy, stop diving and hope his luck turns. Currently he is not always leading at the ball, is easily blocked, has very limited second efforts and is easily knocked over by pretty much anyone in a contested situation.

To say it is hurting us a lot is an under statement. Have heard some whispers he may be playing injured which may go some way to explaining it but to be honest if he is then currently we would get more out of him not playing and having McKernan playing forward.

On top of this Fantasia is yet to fire a shot due to injury. 40 goal forward who was a big part in us winning several games last year. This one is just bad luck but it is really hurting us.

Stringer going forward will help but he is replacing a 40 goal kicker so it may be just even or slightly above Hookers output.

Walla has not looked as sharp so far either.

The biggest issue we have is the midfield which is really a captain obvious thing to say but it is the issue. I started the year thinking we needed two really good midfielders but right now I am thinking the number we need is 3. Now one of the 3 may come from within as we have picked a few genuine midfielders in the last 2 drafts albeit they are later picks and not the early cream. There is still hope Much and Clarke can provide us with something, Guelfi has made a promising start and Mynott is a genuine midfielder with some smarts but will need at least this season.

However right now we are going to have to take our medicine and hope for the best. Devon Smith has been reasonable so far. They had a crack at Stinger being the beat but it is not his go. They had a nibble at Martin but he was out of our price range and never really leaving the Tigers. They also had their hat in the ring for Kelly as well. In the end there were no other midfielders that filled what wanted so we are stuck with what we have.

We have two issues with the midfielders. First up a lot of them are not genuine clearance winning midfielders. Heppell gets in and dirty but he was always a better flanker / winger who could win it at a stoppage but not a crash in guy. Goddard the same. Zaharakis, outside winger. Zack Merritt good clearance winner but not the real animal type. Parish reasonably good clearance player but not big enough or strong enough yet. McGrath can win inside ball but is more of a creative player and outside runner who in time will win inside footy but his best game will be run with / run spread and attack. Devon Smith a good ball winner and fierce at the contest but not a clean inside ball winner.

So far Myers is not proving up to the task mainly because he has just had too many injury periods and Laverde due to injury just hasn’t had a continuous run at it.

So we have no real grunt in the engine room.

There is no quick fix for this other than hope like hell we can get Sloan and find someone else and our young players reach the mark.

To compound the issue our mids play dumb footy. We all dive in on the ball like seagulls after a chip. No one sets up in the secondary or third circles around the contest and we are very poor at hitting targets by hand and the captain can not hit a target by foot.

The we get to work rate both in both directions. The Collingwood and Bulldogs games where very noticeable for our lack of run and spread or just being sucked to far up the ground and being left behind the footy in the back half. Tim Watson put it best , we spread like frozen honey. No work rate just stand around like a sparse forest waving our arms. No positioning no run. No leading.

On the other side of the coin we struggle to defend.

Zaka – no idea.

Parish – ball watcher.

Merrett – ball watcher once he is not involved in the play.

Goddard – has been better but is still a poor defender.

Myers – way out of form.

Smith – needs work.

Heppell – not quick enough to have a real impact.

McGrath – just seems off the pace at the moment.

The Goddard blow up was caused by Zaka using roll over defence and rolling to the outside player. Problem was there was no one inside to roll over and Collingwood proceeded to speed through the middle of the ground. It was a stupid thing to do and a very lazy option. Now this lead me down another path and that is leadership.

I know BJ is a bloke prone to blowing up and losing his cool. I know it is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black for him to be going off about defending but someone has to. The leadership certainly do not. They are all too nice. Heppell , Daniher , Hooker , Hurley , Myers , Merrett and Fantasia. Sure they talk the talk and train hard and do the right things off the field but none are real hard edge players. No Hawthorn , Sydney or Geelong type leaders prepared to lay down the law and say what needs to be said. The fact that Daniher is in that leadership group says it all. Jobs for mates.

Where we go with it who knows. We have too many blokes not prepared to play a role week in and week out. Too many who will not always defend. Key players injured or out of form. Coach will start being under pressure to change things up. Time for talk is fast ending. Time for action fast approaching.

If this how you want to look at it, the high risk high reward bubble has burst. It never has a chace of doing anything in finals anyway.

A good side cannot play from it's half back line which is what we have been doing for the last year.

That's inherently reactive and feeds opponents who are looking to lock the ball forward. We also can't expect the disposal of the half backs to stand up to continued pressure.

I'd go as far as saying that at the current rate against a good side we only win if, for various reasons, they allow us to win. The thing I took from the Port game was that none of the Fox Footy commentators watched us against the Dogs.

The performance against Port was a negligible improvement (except for the extent of horrendous turnovers). They didn't turn up and it gave us a chance.
Oh don't get me wrong, it definitely doesn't stand up in finals. The players on the field yesterday however are more suitable for that style of play.

The best option would be to play the likes of Mutch and Clarke who are more suited to the style of play that actually wins premierships. I've already conceded that we probably won't win a final this year

thanks ant555 - i always love your analysis and insight.

can you expand on the below at all?

Zaka has a long history of not defending or taking a lazy option like zoning off 15 meters away and having a rest. On one of the plays shortly before BJ blew up Zaka could have taken the inside player or the outside guy. He took the outside guy and the inside player pressed up got the ball ran and bounced and pumped it in for a mark which they scored off.
By the look of the conversation BJ was saying find a man , find a man find a ****ing man. Zakas hand notion was he was trying to roll over in defence. Problem was you do not roll over to an outside player and leave the middle player in space.
Now I know BJ is hardly a C grade defensive player let alone an A grade one but someone had to say something.
I remember a game in 2016 where Jake Long was screaming at Zaka to cover and Zaka just wandered off doing his own thing and low and behold the player not covered became the link man.
He just will not do it for some reason.

I'd entertain that idea, except I'm curious who we're dropping for it. Currently we seem to play approximately a 6-1-9-6 set up (6 forward, six back, one ruck, 9 mids that rotate through HB and HF).

The six forwards are something like this:
Joe Daniher
James Stewart
Jake Stringer
Jayden Laverde
Orazio Fantasia
Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti

Then you look at the midfield:

Eight best 22 mids:
Brendon Goddard
David Myers
Dyson Heppell
Darcy Parish
Zach Merrett
David Zaharakis
Andrew McGrath
Devon Smith

Now you have room for one of:
Kyle Langford
Kobe Mutch
Dylan Clarke
Matt Guelfi
Travis Colyer (injured)

This last position is likely an outside mid role, unless you're adding more wing rotations to the best 22 mids above. Likely this last role is one that requires a bit of pace to spread, or we end up as plodders.

So do we drop a winger for Langford? It would mean zero opportunities for Mutch, Clarke, Guelfi. Colyer I imagine will come straight in as soon as he's fit to (probably a couple of VFL games to get him up to full game time), at which point that opportunity likely goes out the window.
This. Except I think we've gone 7-1-9-5 this week and in general.

The frustrating thing is that we're very undersized in the middle with 3 of our top 5 CP winners being >180 cm, same with the clearances. In an ideal world I'd have our 7-1-9-5 set up as:

Def: Ambrose, Hurley, Hooker, Gleeson, Saad, McKenna, McGrath/Goddard

Mid: Langford, Laverde, Goddard/McGrath, Heppell, Smith, Zaharakis, Parish, Merrett, Mutch/Clarke/Guelfi/Myers

Fwd: Daniher, Stewart, Stringer, Walla, Fantasia

Who plays back out of Goddard/McGrath is dependent on who we're playing.

Yeah in the 'from the coach' email message video thing last week they were saying Smith was playing as a forward, and he certainly seemed to for at least part of that game. Seems to be a rotation thing to cover the last spot in the forward line.

There's been something funny going on with how we're fitting in the actual structure though, as you say it seems to be short on defenders at the very least with Gleeson and Dea out, and the next best being either Baguley (who go the gig) or a first/second year.

Check the 'by role' tab in the OP, I've got McNiece marked as a midfielder atm :tearsofjoy: He and McGrath have pushed so far up the ground that they're both practically playing as wingers, at least based on their heat maps :eyes: Definitely not sure that's right though, could be that both played defence and just got sucked up the ground.

Love to see disposal efficiency included in those stats. Good chance we’d have lost that most weeks I reckon.

Would take a lot of transcription to get a team DE average so I've added the disposal numbers and the top 3 for disposals (and the DE for the TOP 3), and a Metres Gained per Disposal stat.

It's interesting when the top 3 are getting less than 30 touches at less than 65% DE and we're still winning the disposal count (okay that's conflating it a little but still). Metres gained per disposal gets shorter and shorter with each passing week too, which tends to indicate that our disposals are becoming less effective as time goes by. Seems to match the reality.

ANZAC day game is interesting actually. Some of them played out of their skins that day, and still came off with the most disappointing loss for a long time.

So we actually won most of the stats, improved our disposal efficiency... and lost the game by 2.1 goals, rather than 3, or 6 or 8 as the last few weeks have gone. Probably says more about the quality of the opposition though.

We’ve essentially got an extra defender (7, with 4 talls) from sending Hooker back and lost a big mid in the process of pushing Stringer forward into Hooker’s spot. Meanwhile Goddard is playing in defence the last five weeks when really he needs to be rotated into Stringer’s midfield spot for the sake of balancing the structure- but I’m not sure if that’s his best position in truth and relying on the old dog in the midfield is not a long term solution anyway.

Basically our smalls are all injured and our talls are all out of position and we STILL don’t have a big clearance mid :drunk: No wonder the team itself has gone backwards. Then the coaches box has too many cooks in the kitchen so they can’t even undo the mess they’ve made of that structure. In some ways their hands are tied and Clarke is only listed as 186cm, but he and Langford dropped into the side has got to be worth a look if Jake is gonna hang out up forward. Even just drop Jake and put Hooker back up forward, see if we can get some semblance of functioning forward and defensive lines before experimenting with the midfield again.

After Ridley's performance last night, we pretty much have three players of the same type in Gleeson, Ridley and Francis. How do we potentially fit all three in the same team?
We tend to play a 7 man defense most weeks. I think it can work. As the modern game calls for players who read the play well and can intercept mark.

Gleeson Hooker Ridley
McKenna Hurley Saad

Bench: Francis

We always play 7 defenders, or at least 6 defenders + Goddard. It's become a bit of an embarrassment of riches really, outside of the team that played yesterday Hurley obviously walks back in at CHB, McGrath can potentially flex his role a little bit but obviously comes back in as does Gleeson, who I suspect may get eased back through the 2's given how long he's been out, and Francis and Redman are both pushing. I think we've got a very switchy and versatile group of guys that could all function in various roles, the least of which being McKenna, which may mean he gets released a little further a field onto a wing.

It will be interesting to see what we do with Goddard going forward, Francis seems like a natural successor

I've heard a few people suggest Goddard be moved to half forward because his kicks inside 50 are so good and with the experience of Hooker, Ambrose and Hurley his leadership isn't as critical in defense anymore. That would free up a spot for Francis or Redman in defense

The problem with that is the lack of defensive pressure he would need to play forward in modern footy. It would be wing or nothing

Wing is ideal. Good target out of defence as a lead up mark.
good kick into the 50.
And it means his kick is generally going into our forward line, rather than risking an intercept from an under pressure kick out of defence.
Stick him on a wing and tell Parish that is his spot to take.

After Ridley's performance last night, we pretty much have three players of the same type in Gleeson, Ridley and Francis. How do we potentially fit all three in the same team?

We can't, not really. Especially not when Ambrose is playing well and Hooker is in defence.

The simple reality is that we're going to need to reposition someone, it will otherwise be a waste of the available talent on the list. Zerk-Thatcher is also part of this conversation because he's excellent above head but also quick and agile enough to play as a flanker/third tall. His form over the whole VFL year to date has hardly been below Francis and Ridley.

Ridley is probably the best suited to playing in the middle or on the wing. I doubt that Ridley's form is going to go backwards, the only real surprise has been that it hasn't taken him any real time to work his way into the season, even with another interrupted pre-season.

Ridley's game has given me real confidence that the respective games of Francis and Redman will stand up well.

I'd say that Redman also complicates things for Gleeson because Ridley and Francis both have Marty covered as talls and Redman would have him covered as a 'small'. If Gleeson is best 22 it's primarily on the back of a really good second half of 2017. His timing is abysmal because I don't see why we'd have any preference to play him ahead of the newer guys if they finish 2018 and strongly as he finished 2017 (which is a real possibility). They've all got Gleeson covered physically in their respective positions so it's not like maturity will be a factor.

At this current rate, Francis is only two weeks away (based on Worsfold's press conference) and he could well be selected before the bye. There will be a selection dilemma sooner rather than later.

At this point in time, and in a Hurley-less side, my ideal back six to seven would be:

Saad Ambrose Francis
McKenna Hooker Redman Ridley

Redman and Ridley would be who I want rotating as the seventh defender/sixth midfielder position. Gleeson could become Ridley.

In reality Goddard should not play on beyond this year. His best footy is being played at half back and I doubt that we'll reach the end of 2018 thinking that he is capable of playing at a level beyond Ridley and Francis, that's the nature of what he's doing. That sucks for Goddard but it's the only really responsible list management decision (assuming that he wont hang around to be depth which is certainly no way for a player like him to end his career).
