Listening to The Age podcast this morning, just a few bits
> Jake Nial seems to think that the discussion around the start of the first Rd priority picks was purely softening up the other clubs for the at best a mid first rounder or a end of first round.
>He also mentioned that the Blues should thank the suns as AFL HQ are really keen to assist the suns but can't do so without helping out the blues who will finish last.
> Priority pick may not be a certainty as AFl HQ looking at alternate ways to give clubs assistance ie: mature age recruits outside of the draft
> Caro said Lions have every right to feel peeved if suns and blues get generous assistance considering our past result and only receiving an end of First Rd PP
> Lynch going to Tigers will set in motion a review of Free agency rules, however, Caro did say how can you shut the gate? The horse has bolted well an truly.
King and Maher on SEN saying virtually word for word all this.

Oh those guys.... original thinking, fantastic insight

If Kingy tried really hard he may have found a way to link Witherden into the conversation and bash him a little more...actually wasn't he our PP from 2016?!? Perfect segue!!

The PP was traded to Port Adelaide as part of the Hanley>Gold Coast move, and later on-traded to Sydney. As a result of the Hanley trade we acquired pick 22.

However, once academy bids were accounted for this turned into pick 24 (Cox). Witherden was taken with 23.

Jackpot.

And Sydney drafted Will Hayward with, what was originally our Priority Pick.

So in a three way trade, Hanley & our PP netted us Cedric Cox and Charlie Cameron once the dust settled.

If you want to look at it separately, Hanley was traded for pick 22, which was shuffled back to pick 24 after GWS matched two seperate academy bids, and we drafted Cedric Cox. And our PP was traded to Port Adelaide for their 2017 first round pick (Pick 12), which we traded to Adelaide for Charlie Cameron.

Looking back at the draft, some real nice players drafted in the later stages of Rd 1 and early 2nd. All of Berry, SPP, English, Hayward and Witho you'd be very happy with the value you got on the selection

Parfitt recruited soon after as well

That 2016 draft was fantastic for us and overall at this early stage is looking like an exceptionally good draft crop, the top 30 or so have virtually all shown something enticing for the future.

IMO 2016 in future years will be looked on very favorably when compared to the often stated 2001 super draft. The top 3 Mmmm! will be interesting to look back-

2001- Luke Hodge, Luke Ball, Chris Judd. (all priority picks)
2016- Andrew McGrath, Tim Taranto, Hugh McCluggage.

How many years ago? I mean it’s easy in hindsight but he did take us to a GF in 2013 and minor premiers in 2015.

So 2016? I mean that wouldn’t have made sense. 2017? Well all of a sudden that’s not years ago. That’s last year.

He may be past his use by date and his style not suited but your comment is easy in hindsight.

He f**ked St. Kilda, and now he has ****ed the Dockers. Sure, its hard getting quality coaches out West, but jeez...Lyon would struggle to get a gig at most East Coast clubs.

Probably. But we got to the GF didn’t we? I mean that’s 16 other teams we surpassed and lost to quite possibly the best team of the modern era in the middle of their run.

Look I get the hate for Lyon and his boring style but he was/ is the best at that style.

To simply say we lost because Lyon was coach? Sorry that’s a dumb comment. I find it comical the number of posters that say ‘Lyon won’t ever win a flag’ forgetting the fact there’s a bucket load of other coaches past and present that have never got close.

I should preface this by saying I am originally a Perth boy (left in '08) and have a vehement dislike for the Eagles and a soft spot for the Dockers. Lyon has not done the club proud. You have a good list. Lyon is not the coach you want moving forward. Sure, he took the Dockers to the GF...he also took the Dockers to some AFL/VFL historical lows, and quite close to the spoon. I really don't think he is the guy to take you forward. Just my two cents (and yes, I want a strong Dockers).

I live in Perth and like both the Eagles and Dockers and l also think Lyon is a bad coach for the Dockers. I don't think he can rebuild and l was very suprised when he was allowed to re-sign for 5 years. Don't know how many years are left but l wouldn't be surprised if they just payed him out at the end of the season.

Cool.
Think you’ll find I initially came here to talk about draft scenarios involving Rankine, but thanks for your input about Lyon.
But to place in perspective again. Freo has been around for 30 years give or take. Countless coaches. Got us to a GF. Our first. We nearly won the spoon with him? (prob worth noting we’ve won many of these without Lyon) so we judge him on that??
I mean we’ve won 16 games in 2 years of a rebuild but there’s pressure on Lyon? How does Fagan get a free pass? What’s he done?? Has he had longer???

Interesting how people look at things.

Just saying. I don’t understand how I come to this thread and I get ripped about Lyon? Read my initial post. Read the replies? I never mentioned Lyon. Bizarre responses.
I mean if we really wanted to look at it, Lyon is copping it for what? Winning 8 games in each of the last 2 years.
Brisbane by comparison have only beaten that once in the last 9 years with 3 different coaches?

You have been dragged unfairly into an argument you weren't looking for.

You have my sympathies.

Sometimes I think good manners are too often sacrificed on the alter of club loyalties....

.......and that's all I've got to say about that

Yeah I saw your post & the replies. Just taking the piss in general, not having a go at you. But in a snapshot, here's where things went south.

And for the record, I'd take Rankine in a heartbeat and back us to keep him.

Interested in your comments regarding trading pick 4 if Rankine was still on the table and trying to shaft Adelaide. Freo have had similar discussions on our board, but the reality is he is highly unlikely to be there at our pick.

Anyway, I think Rankine would be superb with your style of play. Why would you give that up? Unless you think Rankine is a massive flight risk.

It'd be nice to hold Adelaide over a barrel for a large ransom, but yes I agree, we'd be better off picking Rankine. His championships performance was superb, he could be the next Andrew McLeod, just needs to improve his passing sense and goalkicking, which will come in time.

Some have said that we have many similar players, but the reality is at least one of them, possibly several, will end up moving to the midfield instead of playing as a small/medium forward. There'll be space for them all. I don't believe the flight risk rumours, could simply be the local media making mischief like it was with Rayner.

Thanks for dropping by and contributing, I enjoy hearing about other clubs and what people think of ours - thanks. (not everyone does but I do)

Can't see Adelaide wanting to trade unless for Ranking or Lukocious.

The flight risk concerns stem directly from Rankine's media interviews in both print and on tv. And people reading interpreting his responses and body/facial language.

In his early interviews he mentioned multiple times he would prefer to stay in Adelaide and play for Adelaide. In his more recent interviews he's more circumspect with his responses, but often leaves a large pause before answering questions about the draft.

He doesn't know what he's missing. If we drafted him, he'd never want to go back to that boring city.

Didn't Rayner say that he would prefer to stay in Melbourne, before saying that he doesn't mind travelling?

Rankine has also spoken about how he'd find it difficult moving away from his family and community. Probably a bigger issue given he's indigenous
