Great recruiting. Sparrow would be a steal late in the draft

Reckon I should have grabbed another flanker instead of a key forward? I thought Gown was best available but heavily considered Damon Greaves as a medium defender.

Could someone confirm that if we take all five selections in the draft that our whole list is full (including designated category A and B rookie spots)?

If that is the case, is Coleman a smokey for the last list spot or could the demotion of Allison and Bastinac mean that in all likelihood he’ll miss out given it seemed from what I read that at best he’s a rookie prospect only.

Yes.

There's a couple of options if we want him:
  1. We could match (if someone does bid earlier) or take him with our last pick in the 70s.
  2. We could pass on our last pick and take him as a prelisted academy rookie if he makes it past the remaining picks.
The difference between a "rookie prospect" and a pick in the 50s-70s is pretty negligible. I remember from that previous draft night that Reuben was going to be our last live pick until Mathieson slid and Skinner still made it to our next, and then we ended up getting him as a rookie anyway.

Geez Port spent quite a bit of currency to move up to 5 in a SA friendly draft. I’d be feeling a bit crook in the guts as a Port fan if they then spend it on a Vic Metro player whose twin brother went to a Melbourne club.

I guess live trading allows them options still.

Yes it certainly will be interesting to see if the SA clubs try to move up. Gold Coast must be making all the right noises that they will take Luko and Rankine at 2 and 3. Hopefully that tempts Port or Adelaide into making things interesting for the neutral on draft night.

I still think there is a chance GC want the Kings and might be tempted to let Adelaide and Port take picks 2 and 3 for a bucket load of first rounders. The difficulty, however, will be St Kilda who already have a connection to Max and therefore Gokd Coast might then find themselves having to give up quite a bit to jump back ahead of them. Then again do GC have the patience to wait three or four years before the King boys can make an impact being suck big units. You would imagine Luko and Rankine would play immediately. Going to be interesting either way.

If I were GC I think I would be more inclined to take Lukosius with 2, trade 3 for 5+ and then take Rozee with 5. I know Rankine is a talent but out of all of them he is the one I would fear most likely to head home at first chance.

Thought I'd share a little about the draft night(s) event the club is holding over two consecutive nights and what some of us have to look forward to. For those that don't know, Sam Lord who as far as I know, runs the Lions Victorian office and he does a mountain of work and works tirelessly to conduct some amazing functions / events down here, particularly the draft nights (this will be the fourth year in a row the club has held them and having attended every single one, they really are a great night and you do get the inside word, so for those of us who attend, we should be able to fill you on some interesting tidbits. The below is a summary of what we have to look forward to this year:

The Brisbane Lions are planning on hosting not one, but TWO exclusive events around the AFL National Draft, held over consecutive nights in Melbourne. This came about largely due to the changing nature of the AFL Draft, that will be held over a two-day period.

Here’s what you can expect:

DRAFT NIGHT – Thursday 22 November @ Marvel Stadium
- I have been fortunate to secure ‘The Studio’ inside Marvel Stadium as a private space for Brisbane Lions only
- the room is positioned directly beneath the corporate suite where our recruiting team will be based for the evening
- format will be similar to previous years, with the Draft running LIVE on the four TV screens inside the room, while Club representatives provide their commentary and insight in-between selections
- finger food will be provided, while there will be a bar operating inside the room should you wish to purchase drinks
- guests will also receive a copy of the ‘Draft Night’ handbook
- as the Draft is being held at Marvel Stadium, guests will also get to hear direct from our National Recruiting Manager Stephen Conole, and other recruiters (even the coach) at the completion of the first round
- we may also have our first-round pick and his parents in the room afterwards (this obviously depends on whether he is in attendance at the Draft or not – so certainly not guaranteed)
- there will be free competitions such as the ‘Pick the Order’ on offer again with prizes up for grabs
- space will be limited to around 80 guests

DRAFT REVIEW DINNER – Friday 23 November @ TBC
- venue still TBC, but will be held in a private dining space near Marvel Stadium/Docklands precinct
- guests will get to hear directly from some of our full-time recruitment personnel about the players selected in the National and Rookie Draft (all selection will have been completed by then)
- you will hear straight from the horses’ mouth WHY we picked each player, and the positions that we see them filling
- a presentation will also be screened inside the room with extensive video highlights of each pick-up
- includes a sit-down two-course meal, with drinks available to purchase from the bar should you desire
- space will be limited to strictly 30 guests, meaning you’ll have rare audience with our Club recruiters (who have closely scrutinised these players all year)

THE ULTIMATE DRAFT EXPERIENCE

- we will be offering a discount for those keenest recruiters who may wish to do BOTH
- cost will be $160 (save $20) – but obviously keeping mind that just 30 spots available for the Friday night.

I honestly cannot recommend this event more highly. Definitely a not miss event for those tragics like yours truly.

Chaycee Jones
Liam Stocker
Xavier Duursma
Riley Collier-Dawkins
Jez McClennan

If they're all available at our first pick who do we pick? I'd personally rule out the half backs. Rate Collier Dawkins & Stocker the highest for our needs. A premiership is built on midfield depth. I don't think Collier-Dawkins will be there (reckon pick 15ish) but hoping Stocker is there. Let me know some thoughts out of those 5 or anyone else i may have missed that could be a good shot

Why do you rule out the HBFs?

Sorry add Duursma into the two I hope are available.

Just not a big fan of the HBF available, feel like we are covered ok in that (Cox, Witherden, Cutler, Rich). Jez, had a decent season but just feel like Mids at 15-20 are so much better prepared in the draft then a HBF.

1. Duursma
2. Jones

RCD should be long gone (he's a GWS type of kid), and I doubt Stocker gets passed Richmond as he's exactly who they need.

McLennan is the most likely to be left on board as all the mids should be gone by then. Maybe O'Halloran is still on board with McLennan by our pick.

Not commenting on this draft specifically but past experience is that decent flankers often get taken in the mid-late first round and early second round. Not to say you can't pick up genuine midfield talent there but I don't mind spending a late first rounder on a flanker.

In terms of need, I see it as an area of need if we're projecting out 3-5 years. Witho is a gun and is a lock, assuming he remains a defender. Rich is nearing the end of his career. Cox still has some developing to do and is no sure thing. Cutler has been playing wing. Bailey did alright across half back with limited opportunity but I see him as a mid. Bundy should be played down back in my opinion so that's one other option. If we're drafting for 3 years' time, I see another small/medium defender as being quite useful.

I think you can often manufacture a back flanker so I wouldn't specifically chase one but if we like the looks of the ones on offer with our first pick, then I'd support grabbing one.

Jones for mine.
