Bump. So what numbers for Lavender and Smith?

For Smith, it could depend on what's happening to Francis and Long.

Both wear his old GWS numbers.

Lavender, don't know.

Maybe No. 27 and put Redman in a singular guernsey.

I'd like to see McKenna move up a bit. Most of the other players that have really earned the right to wear a historic number have good reasons for keeping their own.

Stanton was offered 5 by Hird, so he might continue the tradition and offer it to someone else who is already at the club. McKenna, maybe Ambrose might get a number upgrade too. Langford and Laverde should probably get better numbers in the next year or two. It would be better if they'd had a break out season by now, but injury and other shit means they haven't so...

As a rookie I'd expect Lavender to slot in somewhere in the 35+ numbers. Next to Draper in Buddha's 39? For some reason I can't see him in 42. Maybe 45 if McKenna moves, or 46. Would be funny to see him in 46 given the last person I remember wearing that number was Fantasia, who is almost the opposite type of player in some ways.

Smith I have no idea about. If Francis goes home to SA then 10 is an obvious option, otherwise :shrugs:

These are my jumper changes

4. Devon Smith - number from 18s
5. Jake Stringer
24. Dylan Clarke - upgrade
25. Connor McKenna - upgrade
35. Draft pick 48
37. Draft pick 65
39. Rookie pick
40. Luke Lavender
42. Adam Saad - 18s and GC number

Saad wore 1 at Coburg IIRC.

I remember Hirdy personally selected Stants for the number 5. Pretty sure Lloyd did the same thing with Hurley.

Club might do the same thing with Jobe and Stants.

That’s why I reckon Mutch or McGrath are smokies to end up in 5.

Stringer 1, Smith 4, McGrath 5, Saad 42?

#4 Begley
#5 Raz
#13 Walla (Should always be given to an indigenous player imo)
#16 Stringer
#20 Langford
#25 Smith
#30 Saad

24 is low key a pretty prestigious Essendon number. McKenzie, Misiti and Jack Jones all had bloody good careers in it and Stanton played 3 pretty impressive seasons in it in his younger days.

Fully expect to see Dylan Clarke wearing it next year.

If they do change -
Predicting that Stewart moves into #25 (Scott Lucas history etc)
Clarke goes to #24
Saad #42
Smith #4
Stringer #5

McKenna into 17 then, he needs an upgrade

Personally id keep Stewart in 17 I see no reason to change it and have McKenna in 25 which is an upgrade but also similar to his older number.

Numbers available: 4, 5, 24, 25, 35, 39, 40, 47

The retirements of Jobe Watson and Brent Stanton open up two of Essendon's most famous jumper numbers.

The No.4 vacated by Watson was worn by Leon Baker in the 1984-85 premierships and by 1993 Brownlow medallist and premiership star Gavin Wanganeen.

Norm McDonald, one of the club's heroes of its dominant era in the 1940s, also donned No.4.

Stanton took on the No.5 after champion James Hird retired at the end of 2007.

Hird captained the 2000 flag in the number, like Terry Daniher did in the Bombers' back-to-back 1980s triumphs.

A couple of the Bombers' new recruits seem most likely to take over the numbers.

No.25 also has a rich history at Essendon, having been worn by premiership players Scott Lucas and Roger Merrett, and Brownlow winner Graham Moss.

Alex Morgan's departure to North Melbourne will allow someone to take over that jumper, while Craig Bird's delisting leaves No.24 free. Midfielder Joe Misiti wore it in the Bombers' past two flags.

Did you know? Heath Hocking (No.39) Ben Howlett (No.40) have both played more games in the respective numbers than any other player in Essendon history.

Stewart had 36 at GWS. Maybe he'll take 35 or something (assuming 36 meant anything to him).

D_P_S do you have any idea what number Clarke might've worn as a junior?

Clarke wore 12 at Eastern im pretty sure and 18 for Metro
If they put Clarke in 17 then his locker will be between Begley and Hurley, with Mutch on the other side of Hurls, Green on the other side of Begley, and then after Green is 14, which is Ridley? Then Raz. So they'd have most of that draft class in the same section of lockers then, only one that isn't is McGrath I think.

Begs and Clarke were best mates from junior days too, so it would be a 'positive' for him when deciding a new number
