Well that doesn’t fit the narrativeIf money is tight its more likely we would simply not offer Griffen a new contract rather then trade out a possible future star like Setterfield.

Essendon and Carlton have their eyes on GWS youngster Will Setterfield, despite being contracted for the next two years.
The former fifth pick (in the 2016 draft), has been limited to just two games so far in his career because of injury. It is understood that the Giants may be willing to let him go to help relieve a potential salary cap squeeze.

Knew about the interest from Essendon and Carlton already but apparently WE are the ones that want to let a contracted talented youngster go because of a 'potential' salary cap squeeze. Doubt it. Would see Griffen and Lids retire before that happens. Shaw might be heading for early retirement too if his PCL injury affects his leg speed. If Essendon want him - McGrath for Setterfield end of discussion. If its too ridiculous for them to fathom then too bad, not happening. Will be required for next year once he recovers from the ACL and if he does not want to go, we dont want to trade him.

I dont blame them for being interested, if I barracked for another team I would want my team to enquire as well. However, when VIC clubs keep creating imaginary reasons for our players wanting out (more money, go-home factor, opportunities, salary cap) 2 years from being out of contract, its getting to the realm of stupidity. Setters will be best 22 by next year if he gets a good run with injury and a solid preseason. Touted to be rated as highly as Kelly was when we selected him - glad the club is backing him and telling clubs to get lost. We will not be trading him just as Essendon will not consider trading McGrath. If we even contemplated letting Setterfield leave early whilst in contract it would be the single dumbest move in List Management history, salary cap issues or not. If you think Ahern has shown promise, Setterfield is even better.
The interest from Essendon is real, I can 100% confirm that, as well as them enquiring about Shiel, but they can go and get stuffed. My information is that is what they were told...in a more polite manner.
You show an unfathomable lack of respect to Shaw in this commentEssendon and Carlton have their eyes on GWS youngster Will Setterfield, despite being contracted for the next two years.

My apologies - I agree, it was my poor choice of wording. Love the way Heater plays and didnt mean any disrespect to the guy. It was based on an interview from Shaw in the past where he had an end of season review with Leon and they were contemplating his future. Cameron apparently told Shaw along the lines that he could keep playing at a highly competitive level as long as he could keep maintaining his speed which he has to this point. The MCL injury is significant given his age and the fact he has had a relatively clean bill of health throughout his GIANTS career so I had some reservations regarding this. Of course, would love Heater to keep going, but only if he is physically healthy. He has in many ways shaped the giants backline together with davis and hoping he can leave the game on a high rather than extending his career one year too long. You show an unfathomable lack of respect to Shaw in this comment
More talk about our tight cap and clubs circling Shiel.
If it means we keep players like Taranto (who will require much more money soon) then I’m all for it. Apparently Shiel has said he will return to Melbourne as a free agent. If that’s the case I’d trade him now while we get more value.
If it also meant we got Walsh from this years deaft then that would be a great outcome.
In saying this I’d be more than happy if Shiel stayed.
Our midfield if Shiel is traded:
Ward, Cogs, Hopper, Kelly, Taranto, Scully, Setterfield, Bonar, Walsh*
Whitfield, Greene, Williams, DeBoer rolling through there too
Something I find is really important is to have a good age spread. That midfield has a great age spread.
Is “suspect” another word for hope?If Shiel and or setterfield depart and I mean if, i suspect it will be Essendon.
Whether essendon can satisfy gws in a trade is the other question.
Is “suspect” another word for hope?
I mean when the police have a “suspect” there is usually evidence right? So is there any evidence?
It would be ironic if we ended up with longer as he was considered a big miss during the inaugural draftIf the saints dont offer billy longer a new contract at the end of this year, would we consider him as a cheap ruck option given preuss seems expensive? Not too sure how his career at the saints has been going so far but hasnt seemed to be able to secure the number 1 ruck spot ahead of hickey.
Not a bad ruckman really, and although he may not have fulfilled his potential, he has a good leap (something mummy and simpson didnt have), solid hands and covers the ground quite well. He wouldnt be an A-grade ruck but I feel would be an upgrade from Dawson both in terms of age and skills. He would also be able to take the weight off rory's shoulders and lobb could pinch hit as required. The 2 ruck approach seemed quite effective when Simpson moved into the team, but if Lobb can bulk up more and reliably take the primary ruck role with Patton returning, Longer would move to the 2nds and be able to help the development of Flynn and Briggs (if we take him in the draft). Might see Simpson getting delisted though if we can snag Longer. However, Longer left brisbane due to homesickness so not sure he would consider making the journey back out to sydney. A list should have about 4-5 able players who can ruck in case of injuries so I dont think he would be a bad pickup at all.It would be ironic if we ended up with longer as he was considered a big miss during the inaugural draft
A slightly better ruck as a whole and 4.5 years younger (Longer turning 26 in May next year and Simpson turning 30 in February next year). Longer also a much better leap so would be more intimidating in packs since he can jump at packs and take contested marks like Lobb. Yes, would agree it would mean there isnt a spot for Simpson though.Longer is basically a marginally better Simpson with a similar effectiveness around the ground.

It's not quite that simple tbh, though some sainters would like it to be.In the lead up to our game with the saints a lot of the discussion on their board was around who would ruck for them
Most of the posts about longer were he was shit. Why on earth would we target a bloke who can’t get a gig for a bottom team? Hard pass
