What if the PP is a first round pick and there are no decent players available?

Imagine trade week if teams know we have a first round pick to trade, as mandated by the AFL, and the best teams offer us is the equivalent of Graham and O’Shea?

Why the **** would we want to give someone else a shot at Cripps or Charlie while we are forced to choose between unwanted discards and fringe players?

Worst comes to worse we trade it down to the next team below us in the order. So if we get 19 from the AFL we just downgrade to GC for their PP(lol)/2nd rounder.

I don’t think that’ll happen, clubs will be falling over each other to get more selections in the top 20 this year.

I don't get this forcing state league players upon someone.
Surely it's just the opportunity and not the necessity

I really like the option and it opens up a lot of possibilities for us going forward. Some of the mature players picked from the lower leagues the last few seasons has been really good and its possible that we really liked some but wouldn't pick them over a kid due to our need to bring in young talent. This effectively allows us to do both.

I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but the possibility to add Kelly and Giles-Langdon ahead of all clubs last year would have made us a lot better side.

There are a lot of guys out there who would make the next step and hopefully our club has there eyes on a few.

So do these state league players take a spot on our list or we are given an allowance to have 2 additional players on our list?

If they make part of our normal list then it's not much of an advantage/help.

Allowing our club 1-2 free hits at state league players is a HUGE leg up on the competition. If it was 2 picks last year we could have picked Kelly and Ryan, both have had great debut seasons with Kelly possibly going home to WA rated as a late 1st rounder.

Both guys were taken in the 2nd round last year, so it would be the equivalent of us having 4 second round selections this draft (if who we draft are rated as 2nd rounders)

Have you any idea the knock on Cavarra? He is spoken of every year yet gets overlooked each time. TAC cup best player and to be at the top in the VFL shows he has a lot but whats the issue?

Not a clue.

My first instinct on both he and Mick Gibbons is height. 175cm tall footballers get overlooked for 190cm athletes.

Fisher, Higgins, Gresham may be changing that.

There is some recent footage of Gibbons but let's go back to his draft year and see what the problem was:

I don't see anything that says he was undraftable. He's certainly been working hard and dreaming the dream every draft since.

I am not disagreeing with you, I just wouldn't target that type of player at this point given what our list looks like
Not with an early pick. Its the type you have a speculative pick as a rookie or 4th rounder (ish). Like we did with LeBois. Just didnt come off. For every Butler or Ronke that come off there are probably half a dozen that dont, they just get forgotten quickly.

You'd go for a gun small forward (trade/draft/1st round) as a cherry on top when the rest of the list is pretty bedded down.

All this talk about Polson. I don't recall he ever cut it up at VFL level.
If you can't dominate there, then forget seniors.
At least Cunningham dominated some VFL games and carried some of that form in the seniors.
I think for Polson's size, he needs alot more tricks (big ask). And he's not big enough to lay proper tackles. I'd love to be wrong, but not confident.
I agree with you upto a point. Though at this stage with the season going the way it has, we really lose nothing by playing him.

He is improving incrementally week to week. Butbits baby steps.

Re: Sam Collins:

I can't help but wonder if he is fool's gold. Rookied by Freo as a mature ager from the VFL, delisted and again starring in the VFL. Is that his level?

There was something on one of the threads saying that he was told to put on weight to play the gorrila role, did, and was subsequently delisted for being too slow.

Not sure how true this. And even if it is, does it stink a little of sour grapes from the player? Or is it bad management by Freo.

I guess Brad Lloyd will be able to give SOS better insight.

Ha - just trade picks with Gold Coast!

As a west aussie, I thought he was ok at freo and surprised by his delisting. So did my freo supporting mate. I could be missing something though

You learn the most by playing with people better than you.

In simulation and training yes, in real games it's not a given.

I've coached in various sports and levels over many years and simply throwing a player in at the deep end isn't always beneficial to their learning curve.

From a sports psychological point it can have a negative impact on their growth especially if it leads to a player doubting their own ability.
