Sam McClure is saying that he believes we will get priority selection of two state league players, ahead of the draft.

Then a priority pick, which we may be forced to trade.

The second part of that equation may be why we've been into MM
What if the PP is a first round pick and there are no decent players available?

Imagine trade week if teams know we have a first round pick to trade, as mandated by the AFL, and the best teams offer us is the equivalent of Graham and O’Shea?

Why the **** would we want to give someone else a shot at Cripps or Charlie while we are forced to choose between unwanted discards and fringe players?

So do these state league players take a spot on our list or we are given an allowance to have 2 additional players on our list?

If they make part of our normal list then it's not much of an advantage/help.

I'm hopeful of this. But it all depends on the 'potentials' in Pickett, Macreadie, Cuningham and Williamson. If two or 3 of those 4 come on then we have the best list of the lot. If none of those 4 come on and Le Bois, Kerr and Polson drop out (most likely) then we drop back a little and the Lions list looks pretty good.

Ultimately saving us vs the Lions regardless is that I'm sure they will lose some of their star young players.

Lions are about 2 years ahead and could have a few not develop either.

IMO SPS Charlie McKay Weitering Williamson Dow OBrien Fisher Kennedy Marchbank Macreadie TDK are as good as any individually and collectively

Kerr Cuningham Pickett I’m still very hopeful for then we will get Walsh

All this talk about Polson. I don't recall he ever cut it up at VFL level.
If you can't dominate there, then forget seniors.
At least Cunningham dominated some VFL games and carried some of that form in the seniors.
I think for Polson's size, he needs alot more tricks (big ask). And he's not big enough to lay proper tackles. I'd love to be wrong, but not confident.

Exactly BCP.

Over the years we have been too lovey-dovey with players that don't show threads of being able to cut the mustard.

It's simple - watch the game - see kid do some nice things (only need be here and there) - say gee this kid might be able to play.

We start with a kid that shows bugger all - later on still shows bugger all (but ooh he's still young) and expect him to turn into a reasonable AFL player.......it just doesn't happen! You have to have it to start with......e.g that young Bulldog player that has kicked a few goals of late. He's not a high pick but you know what....he's shown more than the players like Polson and Graham in his day.

You can have all the patience in the world but they need to show flashes of what they might turn into consistently.
If not.............NEXT PLEASE!!!

Interesting take on the whole thing

I'd hope we had the option to refuse trading it too

What previously overlooked state players are killing it as a forward pocket/back pocket/back flanker/midfielder/ruckman this year?

Imagine getting a Hibberd and Tim Kelly type on top of pick 1, Shiel, McGovern and 2 second rounders

Sheesh, potentially unbelievable. You could even talk the vision to a Gaff....getting a bit silly now but you get the point!!

Brisbane go OK and this is them vs us:
Andrews......McCluggage......Rayner.....Witherden.....Hipwood.....Berry.......Bailey...........Cox..............McStay.........Cutler......Gardiner......Mathieson
Weitering....Dow.................Fisher......O'Brien..........McKay.......SPS..........Williamson....Cuningham....Marchbank...Curnow....Macreadie....Kennedy

It's not always a like for like, but you get the idea.
Brisbane have had 2 distinct advantages over Carlton this year; a. Less injuries b. Better crop of mature players.
Another thing that stands out a little is that their picks overall, would be lower than ours. Most of our guys were taken relatively early on.
If you're including Cutler and McStay then you have to include Cripps...we win.

I wonder how much time we’ve spent watching state league games closely? Won’t be much help if we have no idea of the players.

Very good point.

Seems nowadays it’s any 17 year old in the champs.

Actual talent identifying in other competitions has gone down the river.

Our best fullback of the last 10 years came to us as a Crosisca recommendation, mature age, playing Ballarat League.

Certainly talented enough. Does he have the commitment?

I guess he has moved from the WAFL to the SANFL and Marty Mattner is talking him up so he's still working hard enough. Tackling pressure and pace a real attribute but can fly for marks and compete well on the ground. Has a Hall's Creek/Claremont connection with SPS. Some feeling he could be this year's state league hit, but forwards are a little hit and miss.

I'd like to see more of the selection pool before committing to him.
