Yep same reason we got rid of Fev, we regard strong leadership as getting rid of a problem that has festered.

Where as Hawks, Sydney have a culture that strong leadership fixes the problem before it festers.
Never heard of Hawthorn's own Garlett?

Pretty sure the Lions used their pick to trade up or improve their draft position, could be wrong though.

The AFL could however give one on the proviso that its traded for a player.

Or better yet, apply for a PP and in the application state that we will use it in a trade with GC
They berry at 17 and witherden at 22 (from memory) so it was probably witherden after the compo picks etc slid 19 out to 22.

Even just watching the Richmond vs Crows highlights from last night, a few important things which stand out:
- Having a strong core, or a quick side step to be able to knock away a would-be tacklers arms or wriggle out of a tackle to give you that extra time to make your decision. One on one, you should be able to not get wrapped up and at the very least dispose of the ball to a teammate.
- Stamina, gut-running, providing an option, running into space.
- 2nd, 3rd efforts. You never give up.

All these things come in time with player development and years in the footy system.

OK my two cents on list management. Long post (for me) warning.

It seems to me that almost every week, at team selection, there is an outcry about playing too many talls which prompted me to have a look at the balance of our list and compare it to the top 5 teams.

Following are the results and exclude rookies (apart from PA whose numbers are somewhat skewed as they don't appear to have any rookies at all).

Carlton Rich Coll WC Swans PA

195cms + 11 7 5 8 7 9

190-195 7 8 11 8 6 7

185-190 5 7 8 10 11 12

<185 17 18 17 14 14 17

Also worth noting that the Richmond and Swans numbers over 195cms are overstated as they still carry Hampson and Tippet on their books (I think both have retired).

The two standouts for me are that we have very high numbers over 195cms and quite low numbers between 185-190.

Using the top 5 teams as a template I would consider our list to be somewhat unbalanced but I'm not surprised as I think we have pursued a "best available" strategy over the last 3 years rather than a "best fit". I also believe that is probably the best strategy when rebuilding from the ground up as we have.

The question is when do we start to address this imbalance?

If we finish bottom this year (and I wouldn't be brave enough to back us not to) the consensus here seems to be that Lukosis is the best player in the draft and most agree that we will take BSOS. It would seem to me that we should be looking at trading at least 2 of our 195cms players or our list will be further unbalanced.

Possible that we will encourage Rowe to retire but I thought both Lobbe and Casboult are contracted til next year.

So who would we trade if we're going to change our list balance?

My first thought is perhaps Phillips as we have Lobbe and TDK as ruck backups and I think he could be a sought after commodity. The other two that spring to mind are Kerr and Mckay if we are able to conjure good trades for them.

I know that the mention of Mckay (in particular) will be met with howls of derision but I will not be surprised if that were to happen. The only thing I would say, if we are considering that is that, it is imperative that we play him for the rest of the year to either drive his trade value up or at least prove that he should be part of our ongoing plans. I don't care much either way.

I have not configured any FA's or thoughts of trading pick one for Shiel, picks or anything else into this which may shed a different light on our list.

Would like to know posters thoughts.

Are we unbalanced and, if so, when should we address it and, if we start now, what are our potential options?

Edit: Sorry but when I post this the figures look like a dogs dinner. I don't know how to fix this, hope some sense can be made of it.

Good idea not to add any FAs why would anyone choose us. Yep, Shiel is a pipe dream.

SOS has a big job at the end of the year.

First thing we do is accept the AFLs offer of a PP. We don't ask for it, but we gratefully accept.

Exchange pick 1 for a top 3 pick, plus another first round pick plus a quality player.

Pick the best on baller in the draft with our first pick.
Pick the best available on baller with our PP (end of first rounder).
Trade our 2 x 2nd rounders for established on ballers in the 23-26 year old range.
Throw the proverbial at Shiel.

Add Simmo, Doc, Willo, Plowman, to the backline.
Add Harry, Garlett, Cunners, to the forward line.
Add Shiel, Dow, 2 x established players traded in, 2 x draft selections to the midfield.

Wright, Phillips, Cas, Lamb, Byrne, Lang, Polson, Kerridge, Macreadie become depth players. If Jones doesn't improve his clangers, he becomes depth.

Thanks but see you later O'Shea, ASOS, Shaw, Rowe, Graham, JGM, Lebois, Mullett.

Will be a much stronger line up - should only lose to the second bottom team by four goals.

Shane Nelson with another 44 disposal performance for west Perth today .

I didn't see the game but I suspect it was on the back of another enormous running effort.

You can argue about him as a premiership player or whatever but he would have been just what we needed out there today.

The guy is the epitome of effort.

I'm sure there's some state league players on SOS' radar.

Tim Kelly would've been nice this year...

Just gut every aspect of the club and start again.

We won't be anywhere near it for another decade anyway.
