to me the biggest mistake SOS has made was not taking higgins last year with 10. i think o'brien will turn out to be a fine player, but pickett is a brad hill style winger who we're playing forward because we have no small forwards. the sooner we get a small forward and release pickett up the field the better.

Who else is there? Who should or will we target? IMO we need 5-6 players who can step straight in and make us better

Eddie Betts
Will Setterfield
Kade Kolodjashnij

If several of these players can step up and surprise some in 2019 like Polson Cuningham Schumacher LeBois Garlett Macreadie Pickett Lang TDK Phillips Kerr then we are in a good spot.

I have no doubt that Murphy Kruezer Cripps Curnow Docherty Simpson are our core next year

Charlie SPS Weitering Marchbank Plowman Dow O'Brien Kennedy McKay Fisher Silvagni Williamson are improving and look long term players

It's the next level that will really make us. Adding 5-6 good ready made players will help tremendously especially at reserves level. IMO that will help our development drastically.

2019 is something to look forward to
I dont think we end up with 5-6 ready made players Soap. Im keen for 2 and maybe 2 that had a couple of preseasons and are still relatively new.

Gaff would be gold! I also think Lloyd the other. Gaff speaks for itself but Lloyd added to Doc and williamson next year would make a huge difference.

Setterfield and brodie are the other 2 im keen for. Think setterfield when fit will make an immediate impact. And Brodie would add immensely to an already strong contested possession midfield.

Our kids will be another year older and id take walsh with pick 1 or pick 3 (if we traded pick 1 to gcs for 3 and brodie (and a swap of picks in gcs' favour)).

I don't feel the need for McGovern, Shiel etc. Id prefer we hold a top 3 pick and take 1 or a few of palmer, nelson and collins to top up with mature bodies.

I am with you. Elite comes next year when we are ready to explode. Bring back our injured this year, add gaff, lloyd, setterfield, brodie, palmer, nelson and collins. Along with Walsh and we are miles ahead of this year.

Lol it was more that footy doesn't last forever. Isnt the average career span 5 years? I don't subscribe to the theory that you need to finish year 12. Far from it. But look, I get the blowback and so long as he uses his opportunity in the bigtime to sure up his future then good luck to him. I just don't agree with using football as an excuse to sacrifice at least completing year 12 when countless footballers before him have been able to do both

History says not too many 177cm players get drafted. I can understand him putting all his eggs in the get drafted basket.
He might even carve out a Doug Hawkins style media career post football.

I think our defence just needs to be fit and get some cohesion. Weitering Marchbank Jones Macreadie Plowman Docherty Williamson Cuningham Garlett Byrne Jack as options look good to me. A Sam Collins would be a handy addition
I don't actually think we need him, really.

Bolster our midfield, and draft more midfielders, and those who don't come on to the extent we would like or who are capable of it can get sent out to the flanks later and to become rebounders/defenders.

When you've got natural ball-winners on every line - and the basis for a midfielder is ball-winning, where being a flanker/pocket in the back half of the ground is system based, and can be taught - then you've got the basis for a premiership team. How well they can work together, support each other, will determine how far they can go.

I don't think we need Collins either, but then again, as a replacement for Rowe, he is a better shutdown defender

I'd prefer to draft and develop someone, really.

We don't need the mature depth down back any more, or at least we shouldn't after this year. Next year will be Weitering's third, Marchbank's fourth, Plowman's fourth, Doc's fifth (coming back from an ACL is hard, but it isn't as though he's spent all of that time sitting on his laurels) and Macreadie's second/third. I don't see the point in delisting both of Rowe and Silvagni in the one year, especially if you're also getting rid of KGM in the same season. Draft one or two project players, retain Rowe, and let the youngsters take over properly. Sure they'll get exposed, but that's kind of the point right now.

If Rowe & ASOS go Collins as a rookie would be very handy IMO

Absolutely, but I don't see why Rowe would choose to retire. He's onto a good thing, he's not going to get traded and he's got plenty to provide at VFL level and as ruck/KPP depth. He's not as poor a ruckman as some would have it, and he's as durable as they come; it's actually a testament to how badly we've been struck by injury that not even he has been immune to it.

He's also a damn inspiration, every time he walks out there.

I don't see why he'd be delisted, and while others at VFL level could be better defenders - as in, straight 'blanket the gorillas' defense - they don't provide the cover across the field that Rowe can. His utility is a component of his value.

Went to the Northern game on Saturday. God I hope we rookie Fisher, he's very good.
Hey mate, could you pass on some thoughts of what you noticed how the 18 metre rectangle kick outs effected a team not being locked into their defensive 50 after a behind by opposition?

Maybe outside of this thread and copy and paste this to a thread for it. Would have loved to get there to see myself but was unable to on weekend.

I agree about Fisher, btw.

There are plenty who could come in and play a role straight away.

Comes down to how many we want to bring in, as well as the costs associated with doing so.

He will not last to rookie draft.
I be surprised if he even lasted beyond pick 50 in National Draft.

As good a year as he may be having, not sure anyone is taking a 24 year old key defender within the first 3 rounds of the draft.

Beware chasing Setterfield, after major injury he's vulnerable. Week end, Swans Johnson tragedy is a glaring reminder, our pick 19 is valuable in strong draft, I’d rather Will Brodie more meat and potatoes but less risk.
On Johnson's knee he had never injured before shows it can happen to anyone

Why not just draft RCD with pick 19
