Also, the AFL owns all the intellectual property associated with the Clubs.

Breaking away is absurdly impractical.

The way to change is to pressure the AFL Commission. However, that's the ultimate boys club, so far easier said than done.

Wembley is a neutral ground.
Spurs play there, not that it helps them

Thing is, I would have even less of an issue with the MCG GF if 100K footy fans were able to go. Instead we have 60K with 40K corporates, comp winners and neutrals.

Being in Melbourne during GF week is incredible, it's something we simply couldn't match. As good as Clipsal 500 week is it's just not the same. No other stadium can handle the heat like the G can, hell Adelaide Oval struggles to cater for half that.

Very true. However, there will come a point where the non-victorian teams hold the balance of power. Once they do, and they are smart enough to use it, the VFL and all the Victorian cronies can GFTS. We really need Sydney and GWS to be strong financially. If they could be popular and financially sound, along with us and WC etc... we would have a LOT of strength.

Do NOT talk about ****ing Wembley Stadium.

Wembley is in ENGLAND, which you can drive across in a few hours.

We live on a continent approximately the size of the USA.

The American model is our go. It is as simple as that.

Being converted to a dedicated league stadium....to retain exclusive rights to the NRL GF.

I wouldn't have a problem with the MCG being like Wembley if:
1. Half the tickets (AFL members and MCC) weren't taken up by Victorians who are 99% likely to support a Vic club or sell their rights to others who do (the AFL membership in front of my standing room area was full of Richmond supporters...neutral lol)
2. It wasn't the home ground of several teams.
Changing this I feel would make a massive impact, as it would make the MCG more neutral, which if was the case I wouldn't be too bothered about every GF being played there.

Most the crowds their getting would struggle to fill the suburban grounds anyway.

We will never hold the balance of power. Majority of clubs, fans and money are in Melbourne.

It's not that simple.

The USA has a population of 330mil, sure there's some states with larger populations but there's a better spread than here.

The issue is our sport is so small.

It is not even the most popular sport in our biggest city.

Oh my God.

Use your brain.

Cycle Grand Final between three or four venues, instead of 10+ as in the NFL.

The only thing that drives the AFL is money, so the only thing we can do is vote with our wallet.
It's not just money though. It's also to keep Vic footy strong while also expanding the game into more populated areas.

If it was purely about money then all the unsupported, broke Vic clubs would be booted - Kangas, Saints, Dogs, Dees. They'd also give up on GWS and GC, but I can at least see that those are very costly investments. There's absolutely no potential for growth with the 4 crappy Melbourne teams though outside of temporary membership boosts in good seasons.

And have even less of a chance to get to one ??

Yeah I'll use my brain ****head

Not just a reply to you but to everyone..... why SHOULDN'T the GF be played at the MCG.

I would love us to have played last year' at home but it's never going to happen and for some reason I'm ok with that.
Me too. Yes, the league is Vic-centric but it's not hard to see why. The VFL was the strongest league in the country with the biggest crowds and the most money. There is no other state that could support the number of teams that Victoria still does. So that's where the power lies. There are many frustrating consequences of that but playing the Grand Final at one of the world's great sports stadiums is not one of them for me.

This whole home ground advantage is being overstated with regards to the MCG. You'd have to think MCG is less of an advantage to the Vic teams on GF day than AO would be to us, or Perth would be for the WA teams. Arguably it hasn't shown to be any advantage. Since 1990 there's been 16 Vic vs non-Vic grand finals. That 'fundamental home ground advantage' as someone called it has resulted in 8 wins apiece.

Moreover, with all the GF day corporate stuff (which isn't going away no matter how much we want it to) the MCG's capacity means more regular supporters get to see the game. How many tickets will the clubs get allocated at an AO Grand Final?

Gil quoted as saying our GF is very complex to coordinate so it's hard to move each year...

And here was me thinking the Super Bowl was a more complex event.

You learn something everyday
Umm... does the Superbowl have a 100m sprint?

Didn't think so!

If at the same time they announced the MCG GF extension they also said these 4 clubs have until the end of the current schedule to get their houses in order or die, I could live with the extension

I think its the combined ( with everything else) self interest that annoys me

These things, piece by piece kill my passion for this game.

Every instance that shows how we are viewed as an inconvenience to the VFL rather than one of 18 equal clubs just pushes me further toward the point where I eventually say "**** it, I'm spending too much of my life on a sport that doesn't want me" and walk away.

Yeah, we can be good enough to overcome the disadvantage of playing the GF at the MCG.
Yeah, we can hold onto some players despite there being a lot more opportunities to make extra money in Victoria.
Yeah, we can draft and recruit well despite other clubs having academies and reserving top-end talent regardless of where they finish.
But really if we win another flag it will be because the VFL decided to let us. If their attitude is that we should be thankful to be a part of their league then we're getting to a point where I say OK, bye.

So you're happy for us to have a distinct disadvantage on field because theres a cool vibe around the town?

Vic clubs dying will only worsen it for us.

We all have the same salary cap, but non-footy opportunities will always be more plentiful in Victoria and players will go there for them.

Fewer vic teams just concentrate the good players more.

I went to the AFLW Grand Final in 2017.

Hosted at Metricon, not even the Gabba, it drew nearly 16k. That is a tick below the current Lions men's team average.

The crowd in the Bay I sat in was packed with rugby people who had never attended an AFL game.

Curious punters who had been enticed because a grand final was being held in their town.

There was an energy that day. People were discovering a game on a marquee day at a marquee event. You could see a roadmap to something actually happening in these territories.

That day it crystallised for me that the AFL's expansion plans will not gain legitimate traction unless they bring the show to town.

Existing football supporters will travel anywhere in the country to see the Grand Final.

It is just so bizarre that people think keeping the show in Victoria is good for the game.

I'm happy to play at the ground that gives me the best chance to see my team play, which is the MCG. The infrastructure of Melbourne is such that it can handle the pressure of GF week, we can't.

I cant agree. The Draft is still in place, List sizes dont change and the money is the same. You will see more go back for money but the reverse is also true.

So we have it in Sydney and Brisbane where no one gives a stuff ?? Nah thanks.

What a croc of shit. National competition, my ass. Corrupt bullshit. The non victorian clubs need to form their own competition, simple as that.

The point is that it isn't.

The salary cap is the same, but the AFL world is centred around Melbourne and with that comes more opportunity to earn other money.
