The retirements at North weren’t really great clearance players though. Dal was ok, but Boomer hadn’t done much clearance work for years. That's ok, Wilbur forgot himself.
It wasn't just a down year though, a key factor is always the supercoach scoring system.
Many of these Rucks played and scored under different scoring systems, after the change a few years ago
the elite scoring rucks are either HOTA masters or around the ground specialists i.e Nank/Grundy/Martin.
Goldy was always going to drop off because of the retirements at North i thought, it matters who a ruck
is tapping it to, he might bounce back a bit form wise but i have trouble seeing 110 type numbers with North's current outfit.
IMHO North's clearance differential went down the crapper as a result of Goldy's hitouts dropping (44pg in 2015, 30pg in 2017) and not a drop in midfield quality. He’s still hitting down to a bona fide clearance pig in Cunnington, Ziebell's pretty good and even though he couldn’t do anything else, Swallow still got 5 a game this year.
If you look at Goldy's 2017 vs his 2015 on footywire, the thing that stands out apart from the hitouts is meters gained. Bad Goldy is about half Good Goldy’s metreage. It’s been suggested that a foot/ankle problem robbed him of a lot of his athleticism when he fell away, and that would be consistent with a drop in both hitouts and around the ground impact. It’s also been suggested that they’ve got to the bottom of the foot problem and he’s having a good preseason.
Again IMHO, the real reason not to pick him this year is Preuss. Watchlist I guess, and could be a good option if Gawn or NN goes down.
