We also got Lynch, McEvoy, Steven, Stanley, Cripps and Hutchings in the same period. The pelican and TFWF got rid of all of them bar one. Good on them. Not their fault. John Peake's even though he was at Geelong at the time. Powerful juju that Peake fella has.

Considering that Lukosius is the likely number one pick and that isn't really what we need seems to make it double stupid. Pick 5 should get a good mid and we can keep what we have. GC should take at least one tall and Carlton would be crazy not to take Luko at 1. Pick one suits Adelaide or someone just outside the good picks with some spare picks up their sleeve.
I can see them offering carlton the 2 firsts and an outside player for 1.

I still think GC would be crazy not to take both twins, and then a top mid would still be available for us.
How can they pass on Walsh or Rankine with 1 of their picks. Their too good to pass. I really doubt theyll take Ben with pick 3 even if they rate him much lower when they have the option to take those mids. Despite the go home factor.

If they pick Rankine, he will leave in two years and if the murmurs about him are true, he isnt the type of character you want at a club with no leadership in a party city.

Walsh is a gun and doesn't have the same go home factor and red flags, but the opportunity to take a set of twins who would be gun key posts for them would be huge. Selecting them together would help eliminate the home sickness a lot of their draftees have suffered and selecting them together would encourage their whole family to move up and feel apart of the club. They have a lot of first round picks this year they can use on mids, or they could package them together to try and get some mature midfielders.

You’d reckon when they actually speak to them and offer them the chance to go to a club together, that they’d absolutely jump at the chance . The two brothers together should eliminate any go home factor compared to some of the other top draft picks . It would set the club up for the next ten years with plenty of picks to trade for midfielders any time . They’d be crazy not to do it .

Especially if they trade out Steven May

Yeah but they might not rate Ben anywhere near that pick. Nor for a needs basis considering the other talls they have. And for those reasons and the fact theyd have to pass on a player of the ilk of Walsh/Rankine despite the go home factor. I cant see them taking Ben. Also a more balanced way to draft.
Totally different if they rate Ben close to that pick anyway but i doubt it.

After listening to Simon Lethleans podcast I wouldnt be surprised if we try to split our first round pick. Will make interesting times if we finish above WB with pick 6.

You really have to wonder what the recruiting team were doing trading out of the 2nd & 3rd rounds this year. Particularly given what we will have to give up to get back into those rounds.

How is it for the past 6 or 7 years we havent been able to pick up any balanced midfielders. Trout always seemed to be taking gops. Dunstan, Acres & Sinclair are ok but none are going to get to the levels required to take us forward.

Gresham & Clark might get there but we have not selected one ready made mid? Makes me feel sick when you watch Crouch & Merrett etc running around - what were they thinking?
erret was not a ready made mid not even close he was a high half forward who could maybe become a mid. In fact very similar to Jack Lonie funny how one is given every opportunity on the ball whilst another has to slog it out as a small forward with chance to play as a mid

No matter the draft, pick 1 isnt worth two of your best players and a pick. Especially considering the kid you pick won't be any good without god players around to support them.

Personally, I dont think pick 1 is worth the hype. The player who goes at pick one is generally not that much better than a player who goes between 2-15.
We should only be trading out players to get Draft picks, unless we get our big fish.

I think Lonie's lack of size works against him no matter where he is played. He simply is not big or strong enough to win contested balls and gets man handled far too easily. He is jockey size...

Merrett is 180cms and 80 kgs, can win contested ball and has the speed to get out of trouble.

Richmond are good right now because they nailed elite players 8-12 years ago.

J Roo
Rance
Cotchin
Martin

Closest we’ve got to nailing an elite jet from around that same period is Stuv, but he’s nowhere near these blokes

They were at the other end of the ladder to us but still we used our high picks on,
Mc Qualter,
Nick Winmar,
Armo,
Matthew Ferguson,
Raph Clarke,
traded for Watts,
Mc Evoy,
Tom Lynch,
traded for Lovett,
Cripps,
traded for Saad and Milera and got Ross as second rounder,
traded for Tom Lee and Hickey,
Billings,
Paddy,
traded for Gresh and Carlisle,
traded out of first round for a future Hawks first,
Clark and Coffield.

As you can see the only player that looks close to possibly being elite is Gresh.

Tom Lynch and Mc Evoy the only others close to elite and we let them go. Armo had one really good year before breaking down. The other problems the only player even outside first rounds close to elite is Jack Steven who taken years ago.

We are seriously the worst drafters in the league as far as elite talent goes. The law of averages of dropping a pin on names would be better.

I don't think both, a player and a pick or two firsts maybe. Adelaide would have a couple of mid career players that Carlton say they want. One of the Crouchs to back up Cripps maybe.

Walsh would appeal because he has said he'll be loyal to who ever drafts him.

Hmm. Started with that big word.... IF

It’s not really... He’s playing hurt for the 1st time in his career. It’s not like Hanners is another Freezer or is coming off an ACL.

Sore groins? Easily fixable.

No reason why he couldn’t give 2-3 seasons of elite midfield work then go forward for a year or two.

I like this. Creative and bold.

Not sure Sydney would accept little in the way of a trade pick for Hannebery, but if they did it is a no brainer.

In another thread on the trading and drafting board a Carlton supporter put up the following trade scenario for consideration:

Carlton: Trades picks 1 & 25
St Kilda: Trades 2019 1st RDP, Ross & Billings.

Now I want to make it clear that I wouldn’t do that trade, but it stops and makes you think. We end up with 2 young guns this year and gets us back into the early 2nd round this year.

On the flip side we lose the 2017 B&F winner and a precocious but unfulfilled talent in Billings. In addition our 2019 1st RDP could be an early one and it leaves us vulnerable for the 2019 draft.

But it’s bold stuff like this that maybe we should be considering.

I absolutely hate that carlton deal..

Carlton will take Walsh IMO..

Luko to Lions, hopefully King twins to GC then maybe adelaide come knocking with picks + players..

Tbh I'd take Rank in a heartbeat, definitely don't want to trade out first pick to move up

not knocking your theory Dewah, as like you, atm i'm thinking they can all ship off...however, imo, you rate Billings too low and Ross too high

How does getting rid of Seb and Billings fix any of our issues?
All it would do it make us worse.
