Sloane "disappointed" by Crows' contract comments, says Vince

Melbourne defender and former Adelaide player Bernie Vince revealed Rory Sloane wasn’t happy with the Crows’ comments about his contract situation earlier in the season.

Sloane is out of contract at the end of the season and is weighing up whether to return to Victoria. The Crows said the situation was close to resolved in the first month of the season, but according to Vince, that comment was incorrect.

“There’s been a bit of talk and I think he was a little disappointed when Adelaide came out and said at once stage the deal was nearly done because it was a fair way off from being done,” Vince told SEN’s KB and the Doc. Vince believes the longer into the season this goes, the higher the likelihood his good friend leaves the Crows.

“The longer it goes, you tend to see players move clubs so I think first and foremost he’s got to get his body right for the rest of the season,” he said. Sloane has missed most of the season with a foot injury and Vince said the 28-year-old will need to get back to his best to reassure clubs his issues won’t linger. “He’s got to get back in and prove to himself and to club suitors his body’s up to it,” he said. “I reckon there’ll be a few clubs sitting back to see how his second half of the season goes before making any calls.”

Adelaide captain Taylor Walker is Vince’s best friend and the Melbourne defender said if Sloane joins the Demons, he might cop a talking to from Tex. “I might just turn the phone off for a few years!” he said.

I think someones going to get a bit of a bargain with him.

He's probably only going to get $650-700k a year as apposed to looking like a $900K+ target to pry out of Adelaide and because of his foot injury this year.

I'd be very interested at that price.

I'd be very interested at that price

We were offering Dusty $1.5m.
We were offering Kelly $1m

Should we offer Sloane & Gaff the Dusty money?

It'd be a fair get to have both I'd have thought.

We'd also likely lose a quality young mid to accommodate it.

If you could get both for 1.5-1.6 million it'd be a no brainer in my opinion.

Not sure about Sloane now. Very good player but reminds of Kane Johnson at a similar career stage albeit more injury prone.

If our year continues on its current trajectory would probably direct our attention elsewhere. Was initially interested in what he'd bring to our group but our immediate needs may have changed.

Am I missing anything from our next premiership team?

Kelly is at GWS, Wines is in SA and the Vee Dub is out for the rest of the season. #whatlid?

‘IT'S JUST THAT I DON'T WANT TO SIGN YET’

By Jesper Fjeldstad

The Ollie Wines free agency saga continues to bubble over with the Port Adelaide midfielder this morning playing down suggestions he has gone cold in his negotiation for another contract at the Power.

Wines, a Victorian, has attracted interest from Melbourne clubs and is yet to commit to the Power for next season but says he is happy at Alberton - but just not ready to put pen to paper.

"In no means am I rushing to sign; I've still got plenty of time," Wines said on Adelaide radio station FIVEaa on Thursday morning.

"I'm comfortable with where the club is at and what they are offering.

"It's just that I don't want to sign yet.

"For people to not understand that... it's difficult to me because I'm the only one who can control that decision.

"It's progressing nicely."

Wines told Melbourne station SEN on Tuesday he was still weighing up his decision after speaking to "various parties".

This prompted the station to suggest Wines had "backflipped" on comments he made earlier in the year pledging "long-term allegiance" to Port and reports in The Advertiser that he would make his decision during the Power's bye week.

What's with that all caps headline... (I don't mean you of course)

Let’s assume for a minute that we need to cut 5 guys from the list come the end of the year (big assumption I know). Who do you think are most likely at this stage? It’s bloody hard but I’ve gone

1: hibberd

2: Williams

3: Neilson or Watson

4: Hrovat

5: Morgan or Mountford

Either way given we probably won’t have any retirements there might be some very unlucky players.

Why does Vince and Walker being best friends not surprise me.

Interesting, but I'd doubt Hibberd (BFNAAK) or Williams will be moved out, the others are more probable…

Hibberd has a combination of tank, height, strength and reasonable reading of the play that I think will see him kept a bit longer as the coaches look for his best fit.

Josh Williams agree, has one main trick, hard to assess how the club rate him outside of that. Interesting he's still on his initial contract as the club usually go early to extend contracts on young players in their future plans eg Simpkin, Larkey, Preuss. The fact he got senior action last year is in his favour.

Nielson and Watson both present as undersized KPDs with different strengths - ferocious competitiveness and smart play reading respectively. Can't strongly agree or disagree on them.

I liked Hrovat but he has a bit of competition for a spot. That said if Garner just doesn't get on the park in the next couple of seasons he might still be next cab off the rank for Turner or Simpkin.

Morgan isn't doing much wrong but would want an opportunity soon.

Unfortunately Mountford seems at the back of the queue despite how I rate him.

Williams is the one that needs to do something.

If Thommo & Waite finish hard then there is going to be some hard decisions made.

The bloke should have ended up with 45 off a HBF last week. He's safe and will make the side in time.

Think you mentioned somewhere you see his best position might be wing?

Wing, half back, whatever opens up.

He's no speed blitz demon. He's more your Sam Gibson endurance machine, only a much better mark and a slightly better kick.

Would people place a 21 year old better version of Sam Gibson at the head of their delist list? Only the silly ones.

Agree with that. He's got the size to effectively add a more physical edge to his game too, at a Thompson/Tarrant level at least - if not a Firrito level if he really committed.
