Jayden Short and his booming kick becomes really important here.
He should send SHocking a bunch of roses.

Balta is a booming kick, with the added bonuses of being able to win contests and not being a panicky squib.

Shorty is going to be really busy next year, if we can even get a shepard in for him, so he can get to 30 to 40 metres out Lynch and Jack can just stay on the half forward line taking hangers.

I think you are half right. The only downside is you are now defending the half back / wing area. Much wider. Much harder to defend. It decreases our effectiveness somewhat but if we can nut it out then yep hello open fwd line.
This goes for all teams though. We don't own a monopoly own defending the fwd 50, we are just the best at it.
Jack will push up to defend the kick out as he reads it off boot basically better than anybody. Maybe even Lynch. Vlaus come up. Transition Dusty to 1 out as you started. Booyah.
It will decrease the effectiveness of that part of our game though.....but only from kick ins....keep the ball live in the 50 and nothing changes
It's 5 metres max extra, AFL are actually stupid with this as under the current system getting out the back was easier from a play on situation, under the the new rules getting out the back wont be as easy because of the press setting up 5m back so players are going to be gun shy when attemping a hail mary long bomb. I honestly think people are over thinking this and with the AFL think the game is somehow going to transform into something never before seen, it won't it will remain the same.

Wonder if we will persist with just playing 1 ruck?

Riewoldt will definitely benefit from that hands in the back rule.

Going to be very interesting how this will play on our defence.

Far-out those 50 metre penalties are going to give a huge advantage.

Nah the Ump will still say he pushed his opponent with unnecessary force lol even though his opponent didnt even move.

Opposition players will also delibrate push Rance in the back and it will be called play on everytime.

However the AFL havent taken into account we have Jayden Boom boom Short to take our kick out next season, so Id expect another rule change that abolishes the play on rule after next year lol

Pathetic changes from a pathetic administration running a completely trivial mickey mouse competition. What other professional sport has 8 rule changes in between an off season. It's ridiculous.

As for the dumb rule changes. Hocking said it's a free kick out of the middle if you don't have 6,6,6 starting positions. I hope to god a team who's in front by a goal just stacks their backline and cops the free kick. That way it's no different to now. Teams pretty much concede the clearance when they're in front and flood back so no change. I also hope ruckman start grabbing the ball and creating stoppages in crucial moments to also stick it up channel 7, the gambling sponsors and the administration.

Tall ruckman grab the ball from ruck in centre clearance. Then charge players back for the secondary stoppage.

So, no goal square any more.

Just play on after a point is signalled.

This is gonna lead to a lot more structures that allow teams to work the ball out of the defensive 50.

No one allowed within 20 metres of the kicker, 2 or 3 players to link with the 'play on'.

Plenty of opportunities to run the ball out of the defensive 50.

Will be interesting to see how the coaches react.

So the AFL says the game is broken and needs serious surgery. They will test the rules before implementing them.

So they do minimal changes designed to restrict Richmond’s dominance (locking in forward 50 and playing without a ruck). Oh, and reverse the HITB rule after Richie retires.

And they don’t even test the new rules first.

What a joke. McLaughlin is the worst, most reactive fence-sitter the AFL has ever seen.

So the AFL are trying to engineer a premiership for Melbourne and/or Collingwood by the look of it. The new ruck rule make ruckmen even more influential so we’re going to struggle around stoppages from here on end. Our midfielders will be reactionary against the teams with powerful rucks.

These rule changes will force us to adapt, right when we finally have a dominant game plan. I can’t remember the AFL bringing in a swath of rule changes when Sydney and Freo were top of the table contenders or when Hawthorn used a zone to smash the competition for half a decade. But when Richmond wins a flag and is the team to beat...

I know the coaches will develop a even better plan and our players continue to work together to bully the opposition but seriously AFL - stop being so reactionary and wait a few seasons!

There is no new ruck rule, they can just grab it out of the ruck without getting pinged that's all, a rule that was relaxed for the entire 2017 and 2018 seasons. Instead of relaxing it they are just making it official. People over thinking things and getting all worked up for no reason.

Mmm I disagree. A rule that is slightly relaxed still keeps the players honest. The threat of the rule is still more powerful than no rule at all. Players may push the boundaries but now there aren't any.

Those kick ins will force the defending team to spread more making an easy chip in the pocket an easier option
It's always been an option, again nothing will change with the kick ins because 98% of all kick ins will go to the pocket or to the flanks, AFL want teams to go up the guts from kick ins but that wont happen because you are a sitting duck if you turn it over, up the guts kicks are the easiest to defend.

Ruckman still has to dispose of it correctly, no different to a mid getting it. Most ruckman will still tap it because that is the best way to clear the stoppage, grabbing it will cause more stoppage's. There is no threat of the rule, all it is that ruckman can't get pinged for a feather touch if they grab it out of the ruck.

The rules make it easier for the defender to kick out, but the forwards will still swarm to choke the next disposal.
It looks to me like they wanted to introduce radical changes but got cold feet.
Doesn't bother me in the slightest TBH.
The extended goalsquare looked disgusting and I am glad it is not incorporated.

I just don't understand where they are coming from with it. Is it a desperate attempt to cement the "ruck position" on the field? 2 years ago when players could go third man up the biggest goofs on the field (Rucks) nearly became redundant. I for one was delighted. But now they've come back into fashion so is this an attempt to make them even more prominent?
Otherwise it doesn't make sense at all as it creates more stoppages.

Or do they just want to allow Grundy free pings at goal as he seems to be the only one who seems to grab it off the top of my head?

Just a bizarre ruling.

The only time a ruckman grabs it out of the ruck is at a forward 50 stoppage close to goal, Nank does this so we are advantaged as well, oppo ruckman in their defensive 50 tap it so expect more grappling to occur to prevent your opposing ruck to grab it.

Like i have said before, the AFL and their cronies have painted a picture in their heads about how the game should be played, they are going to be in for one massive reality check when those pretty pictures don't happen.

Edit: i thought i would put in bold this, this was the very thing the AFL wanted to prevent years ago so they brought in the ' if you grab it and are touched its a free kick ' it's look like they are going back to it and are going to put Brian Taylor in hospital with a heart attack because he will be screaming about all these ruck stoppages.

I can't believe how cunning and sly this lot are. They're actually taking credit for the back half of this years games!!! We trialled the rules and it sucked....but....but....the threat of new rules made the coaches change their game plans in anticipation for the new rules. GAGF campaigners!!!!

I actually can't believe the hubris, the delusion, the stubbornness. It's an insult!

What's wrong with the game? High scoring exciting footy!!!

We need change!!!!

Wot.... why?? The back half of this year has been brilliant.

Ummm….fair point....oh...wait wait...Nah that's because of the new rules!!!!!

Mmmm but they haven't been implemented yet so how could it be your doing?

Ahhh...you seen young child...our future rules have impacted the game back in time!! This is how brilliant and all seeing and all powerful we are!!!

Holy ****!! Are you batman? Mind blown!
