How come we year after year trade away next years pics, then are left having to trade back into the draft/trade period? Dont these idiots who are responsible know what they are doing?
Because if we want to trade players in you need to give up something.

The only way we'd get back into the first round would be to do the same trade that Carlton did last year. Grab a pick around 18 and swap future firsts. Gamble on a side you think will fall. Unfortunately it's unlikely sides will gamble on us staying down.

I would definitely be happy with trading our 2020 first for a top 8 pick this year. If we get 10 next year come our pick it will be 15 (guess). Plus, if next year any good player wants to come, we have
2021 First, Second and so on. Trade into the draft by trading out of next years. Win for me.

I wonder if GWS would trade us back 6 for next years first rounder. They will probably have to pay for Greene with it anyway, he's a top 4 talent. If they don't have it they can't use it. They could then use all their late picks to still get a top 4 talent and wouldn't have to use shit picks.

I know there’s an exception to this but a team can’t trade for a pick they’ve already traded. Also, we can’t trade our future first round pick because we’ve already traded out later rounds.

Glass half empty
If we trade our next years, the person trading with us will assume worst case that we end up near the top of the laddder. So we lose in the trade.

Think of it this way, the Academy guys are off limits, but we will get a prime choice from the non-acadmemy players. Those with academy picks won't be able to get them
If we take a kid next year the age profile will be uneven imo. Just really think Ash or Flanders is what we need. I heard that next years draft ain’t as good. It’s worth the risk.

Both look very good and are what we need. If we struck out on Hill I would’ve been happy to take pick 6 to the draft but we wouldn’t have got Howard either I suppose. Pick 12 might still get a good player if we still did the split.

Players chosen at pick 6 from 2010-2018:

Reece Conca
Chad Wingard
Jack Macrae
Matthew Scharenberg
Caleb Marchbank
Aaron Francis
Sam Petrevski-Seton
Jaidyn Stephenson
Ben King

Definitely a bunch of good picks but also a few who wouldn’t be close to the quality of Brad Hill. Let’s be fair, Hill is a known product who we’ll get 6-7 years of service from. It was definitely the right choice to forfeit this years draft for Hill and Howard alone in my opinion.

That's a sweet pick. Some guns there. I would have taken Ash and if he went earlier Flanders.

Who ever gets taken at six will a star.

Not worth stressing over....

1) whoever freo pick may not be who we would have picked

2) how they develop in that environment is not necessarily how they would in ours (games played, position played, work/life balance etc)

3) hill is a gun and will have more immediate impact than pretty much any 18 year old ever will. I accept the 18 year old will likely still be around well after Hill has retired but we are filling a hole now.

4) if he's good he will come to the destination club in 2 years anyway ;)

Don't lose your mind stressing over what might have might have been. Enjoy what really is.

Any chance we pick up Lewy Pierce again as a back up?
I think we're better off with a state leaguer, worth remembering that's where we found Roma

Too early to call these guys but the last 2 tracking very well, first 2 possibly busts.

2 possibly 4/9.

Hill/Howard/Ryder all day.

If we had of given Pick 6 to Freo , I would have been reminding them of James Walker to shut them up.

Might get a good player at 6 might get 1 at 51 you just don’t know these days
Look at worpel from hawthorn went late and Is a star

The stats are pretty clear on draft ranges for games played and quality. In the pick 3-5 range the chances are 1/3 to get an AA. In the pick 6-10 range the chances are 1/6. In the pick 11-20 range the average games played is 118.

It’s well known but the top 10 of the draft is where you get elite players. Those picks are worth their weight in gold and I think they’re undervalued. Of course there are very good players found in later rounds and we happen to be pretty good with finding handy players but the stats are clear that generally the top end of the draft is where you find elite players.

We have delisted him twice, and after 8 years on a AFL list he has only played 1 game of passable AFL footy. He also cant get a touch at VFL level, and hasn't played in almost a year due to concussion issues. Quite possibly the worst footballer to wear a St.Kilda jumper in my lifetime.

Why on earth would we pick him up again?

This is an unfair characterisation

I’d rather Longer, he is a par number 1 ruckman. He is an average number 2. He’s a good number 3.

Say we just top up with mature agers, any chance we would have a look at ex Frankston player Alex Smout?
Had a couple of very good seasons in the NEAFL culminating in being selected in the team of the year.

Looking at his highlights, reminds me of that bloke we gave to Fremantle. 😉

**** P.S. even if you don’t like the highlights the background song makes up for it. 😏
