Fine, he has brought in one. That’s still an indictment, particularly when you consider Betts’ age and how non-existent he was in a lot of games this season.

Been unlucky so far. We're coming to what should be the last two years of our rebuild and we came to a period where we get the ideal players we need chosing us and wanting to come to us and due to forces beyonde our control things fall over.

I don't get why people are complaining that we have no small forwards, it's obvious, our rebuild is ongoing, we haven't had enough time to finish the rebuild and we got very close to getting very close to finishing it. We're supposed to have holes at this stage, just a matter of filling them and I still think we will.

Move on and try again. It's a bit of a hurdle but I am still confident that come 2021 when our list is coming to it's prime, when it counts, we will have who we need.

Small forwards mature quick so if we draft one or two with our picks this year we won't have to wait long. One of the main reason every club that wins flags leaves them until last.

Having Betts around is going to be a good thing, think he will be around in a coaching role for a while. Who better.

I wouldn't get upset over missing Butler. He would have been handy and filled a role but Gibbons is pretty much doing the same thing already. End of the day he was being played in the VFL and there weren't a heap of clubs chasing him. He'll be good for the Saints and would have been handy for us be he's theirs now. Not the end of the world.

If we manage to get Martin through in the PSD, draft some good youngsters in the draft then this recruiting period will turn out to be pretty good.

Not our fault things fell over. Just bloody bad luck. Players were convinced, we were convinced, other clubs backflipped and played games. Can't help that.

You can guarantee Papley and Martin aren't happy right now. They will be getting out of there as soon as they can.

As for Papley and his manager, what are you doing signing a contract like that? Come on.

Would not suprise me to see Papley end up on our list at some stage and I get the feeling we will find a way to get Martin via the PSD, most likely with salary.

Get Martin via the PSD and draft a good one and this trade period is a win. Just not the win we expected.

Of course I wanted him ... hes got talent ... and he’s obviously unhappy up there so given all this why wouldn’t GC trade him for the picks we allegedly offered in order to facillitate the trade ? ... so now they’re left with a guy who doesn’t want them and they play him in the twos ... and then threaten to take him in the psd ... it’s laughable ...

because when you commit to a player you need to make it happen

it's harder to commit to a player from gc not easier

because they have to deal hard to make sure that everybody doesn't walk away and that interstate clubs can't poach easily

which is why they won't let him go

Is SOS paid overs for Martin like the Gold Coast wanted than we would be all on here complaining about that. I'm hopeful we can get Martin in the pre season draft.

Bulter or Gray is not the answer.

I would like to see us trade pick 9 and 43 with Brisbane 16 and 21, Geelong 17 and 24, GC 15 and 20 or Port 12 and 18. There are some talent small forwards in this draft ranked between 15 and 25 and by splitting pick 9 we could add 2 player that could turn out better than Papley.

I agree but I think SOS’s reputation as honouring his commitments and giving the Papley deal every chance is more important in the long run. Had he pursued Wines and left Papley stranded the long term damage would be significant To SOS and us.

We will get Papley next year for less.

Martin might be better at Carlton than he’s been at GC, so it’d be great if we can get him in the PSD, but on the evidence to date not paying overs for him in the trade period is the right call.

Using pick 9 effectively (swapping out for 2 lower picks) to pick up two small forward prospects via the draft is a good plan B, especially when we have Eddie coming - mentoring young small forwards is his long term role at CFC imo.

For what he would have cost butler should never have been dependent on papely. When I saw we cooled off our interest in butler i assumed it was because papely was 100%. no other explanation other than poor trading strategy from SOS...

Especially considering Liddle came out mid season saying the club would address its small forward issues during the upcoming trade period.

Papely was never going to be traded unless they got Daniher. What part of that is SOS fault?

I think gold coast are hoping that Martin doesn't want to risk going through the PSD and waiting for a while to find out his club so he just re signs
