I would if there was a question.
No doubt we need mongrel, not sure if potting a player who only just arrived is the way to go.

So we've recruited a guy who's reportedly more in love with basketball than football.

We'll see soon enough if he's a "real competitor".

My question was actually very clear.

Why would Bolton make such a big deal of Stocker being a real competitor?

Instead of being a smart arse an answer would be appreciated.

42 list changes in three years? Wow it's like a new team build from scratch without the draft concessions. What a truly remarkable effort. SOS is a legend.
We had 42 list changes after last years trade/draft period. We are now up to 53 changes in 4 seasons (11 this year?).

Funk - I reckon your interpretation of Bolts' comments is a bit alarmist to begin with.

He picked out one of the key aspects of Stocker's play that they really liked, and used it to give the kid a compliment after he was drafted. If he'd said to Walsh "You're a professional, and that's what we love about you" would you be concerned that, by omission, none of the other players on our list are professionals?

Reading far too much into it, there's nothing to worry about. Stocker is a dual-sided, burst midfielder who does his best work around the stoppages. But you can't excel at that role without embracing the physical nature of it, which is something that Stocker appears to do naturally. So yeah - the recruiters really liked how much of a competitor he is, and Bolts let the kid know exactly why he stood out enough for the club to make a bold play just to bring him on board.

Thanks for the response.

Time will tell like it always does.

We've certainly recruited some talented guys who haven't made it at other clubs for various reasons.

I've never ever heard a coach say this to new recruit and it struck me as very strange - unscripted Freudian slip etc etc.

So we give up next year's R1 pick for a player whose key attribute is "you're a real competitor"?

FWIW - That tells me Bolts thinks we are lacking in that area.

That'll be putting all our eggs in the TDK basket with Kreuzer and Lobbe both 30 and Phillips 28 and injury prone.
How many ruckman do we need on our list? Four to me seems about right.

I think you are reading way too much into a simple compliment. I’ve heard many players say this kind of thing when speaking of their recruitment, the coach outlining a key attribute they like.

Humourise

I would be interested in his track record, rating McAdam, that high after not being drafted 5 odd years in a row, makes me curious
A
Hey Arrow, how would you compare him to Kelly in terms of output vs the rest of the state league they played in at the time and how would you compare SANFL and WAFL, I only watch the odd VFL game.

I know they are very different players but my understanding was that Kelly was dominant in his last year before drafted.

The following episode of Cal Twomey and Nat Edwards' 'Road to the Draft' podcast contains an interview with Stock after he won the Morrish Medal.

While both Nat and Cal were impressed with his demeanor, their post-interview discussion of him suggests that Cal didn't rate him in top 20 calculations. Considering he went at 19 I guess it shows he was close to the money.

Cal is a journo ,wtf would he really know about spotting football talent? He just speaks to recruiters and talent spotters, reads other crap from other scribes and regurgitates.

I see Twomey at the Nationals and he does get around.
Does pick up the pulse of what is happening but not really the best of talent spotters....which begs the question...who is?

Who is the journo/poster one listens to more than others?
I liked Irel, Quigley and the Bishop as they took chances but not without explanation and reasoning.
Those guys just felt to me as though they took another layer off the drafting caper and had some interesting things to add.

Yep he's a journo - and he's mentioned a few times that he bases a lot of his rankings on speaking with recruiters/club folk in the lead up to the draft. Which, to me, seems like how a journo should operate - gather data, interpret and report.

People on this board need to relax a bit and not take the negative/neutral opinions as personal insults. As a supporter group, we become so thin skinned this time of year.

I'll be interested to see what Russell does with Setterfield and his recovery. He held O'Meara back and didn't let Burgoyne play until he was 100% when he came over from Port. He has made it clear to the players what needs to happen to be ready to play
Something that we have been crying out for years. Hard to believe how bad our medical team were last year.

If he doesn’t want the criticism then he shouldn’t rank the players.

In fairness though, he's up to the criticism. Try him out. I have and he'll always reply in kind.

He's doing his best and even though I've had shots at him, he isn't operating from an ego platform.
He really is doing his best and guess what; He gets things wrong.

I don’t have anything against him myself and I don’t pay attention to him or anyone else for that matter, i prefer to watch the kids myself and make up my own mind.

You're clearly looking for something to criticise, so I'll leave you to it.

The way we are going it is going to be weird when the players vote for a captain in a few years. Everyone will nominate themselves and it will be a tie.

First club to have 22 co-captains on gameday.

Quale was usually pretty good value when it came to the under 18s. Also rate all of GWSes picks this year (which quale would have had some influence in)
