Big difference between $500k and $750k per year. You know that we roll with a public service increment system. Keath hasn’t been around long enough to have worked through the structure.
750K for a 3rd tall defender is ridiculous coin. Talia isn't on that and he's been a premier KPD for years.

To be fair, this was Keaths last chance to set himself up after sport ....I certainly don't begrudge him

I don’t begrudge any of them. I do begrudge the posters that get emotionally involved or call the plodders without better options, “loyal” just because we’ve overvalued them and they’ve stayed.

I suspect a strategy to turn free hits (Cat B rookies) into draft picks.

The age they were when they came to us, Keath and Greenwood were going to be useful top ups for a few years during a premiership window. If they stay with us to retirement they become dead assets. Get something for them while they still have value and their value rolls on in our future list.

Given where we are at, it's good business sense.

I don't think you're too far off.

Pick up a couple talented players who AFL lost for whatever reason, if they make it, hey great we've supplemented the back end of a squad we're hopeful will contend without much outlay on our end at all. If we're not in a phase to compete for a premiership, then these types tend to be good options to move on and refresh with draft picks.

If we finished 4th to 6th, odds are we resign both Keath and Greenwood.

500K is also ridiculous coin for the type of player Keath is.

Doubts on Stengle and Shane at this stage, and Neddy is no small forward. Murphy still a ?? For mine.

Fanta would come with a huge price tag though.

And it's Tom Browne....

Shane looks the goods to my eye. Stengle looks a stock standard crumber. McAdam to me has a very high ceiling, hope he gets his fitness up to scratch so we can see him at the highest level.

That's a Benny - between TC and Choo-choo - he's a naive, goody-goody.

Benny - my fave.

Point is that Talia should have been on that at his peak and if we weren’t overpaying the middle of our list he would have. Still, I’d be surprised if he hasn’t been close to that. Keath can break lines, Talia cannot. Keath also still has more to go in terms of development, his next preseason will be his 4th or 5th. An explosion is a distinct possibility.

Is that what Keath has been offered? ....Clubs do have to overpay to extract players frrom clubs ....great for Keath

Probably.

Look, it's ridiculous, but if you think this is the piece that catapults you into premiership contention, then you can live with a ridiculous contract, especially as in the grand scheme of things, it isn't high end midfielder wages.

For a club rebuilding. It's ridiculous with no purpose that could make you overlook the fact it is ridiculous.

You'd find Talia would have been on 600k for close to a decade at this point in time. Otherwise, he'd have left in 2012-2013.

We don't tend to underpay star players. We just overpay our mid tier which ruins our ability to attract more. The idea of trying to develop good depth/a good supporting cast is right, the method is flawed as the goal of this is to have it as cheap as absolutely possible.

Unfortunately, one of the side effects of the Lever debacle is this notion we have underpaid stars seemingly has stuck, despite how bad even the initial demand Lever had was for us. The fact there was a chance that we got stuck with him at 650k a year truly horrifies me.

Guess we will see how bad they want him ?
No doubt that’s completely true. What’s not said though is, “but he’s got 5 x $850k on the table from that rabble and we’re a fair way back with 3 x $750k with triggers for 4 and 5”. Of course we want to keep him and of course he wants to stay, but that means jack if the numbers are too different.
geez just looking at those numbers on paper, personally I’d be off

Which is why I still expect him to go.

I don't think he does have that development left. That doesn't mean he won't be a gun still, but I don't see him getting too much better at this age.

He can break lines, but he can't play full time KPD.

That said, I was more inclined to keep him as our defensive depth is horrid rather than Greenwood.

But 750K is madness.

Fitness and strength are extremely important. He’s got plenty of improvement there.

Not sure if we’ll get that.
We won't, simply because at his age and with his checkered injury history he's not worth a 1st round pick. Mid 2nd round, maybe a pick or two or three either way is around where he sits IMO.

Why would we do that?

We need:
- premier midfielders
- tall backs

We do not need:
- small forwards

I'm pretty sure after Eddie goes, we'll only have Murphy and Stengle and McAdam and McHenry as small forwards. Panic stations for sure.
Kornes was saying this afternoon we have no small forwards and couldn't understand why we werent trading Orazio in. I've only just recovered from the head knock from falling off my chair in laughter.

I'd take pick 2 for brouch fight now if we could, As he's only going to suffer in other pre-season soft tissue injury rendering him useless for another year. Get rid of every assistant coach and the entire administration while their at it, f.ckin bunch of cooked c.nts they are.
