Personally still think Stuv will go "home". Also think it's time for a change of scenery for Paddy.

Possible 3 way trade with Stk/Geel/Freo involving Kelly, Acres, Langdon, Stuv, Paddy + picks

I like the sound of Tom Green. No-nonsense contested pig, racks up big numbers, over 60% of them contested, and sends it forward with a big kick. Has done it consistently all year as well. Sounds like either of the Crouch brothers. Would be stoked with someone like him. And think of all the jokes we could make with his name.

Scratch that, he's Giants academy.

I don't really buy that Steven being out should affect Steele's contested numbers. It's not like he's getting tagged and if anything not having Steven in there should mean he should win more in tight. And as I said Dunstan has really increased in that area.

I can understand Ross, as he gets a lot more attention and rely's on the footy being dished out to him.

If teams try to mind Stuv by blocking his path it means two players are teaming him, leaving Ross or Steele free to do as they please. If they realise that Steele is taking their best player out while taking contested possession they can target him instead, blocking his run and playing a free man on ball.

He is GWS academy though.

I like your thinking, although I doubt Paddy ever plays football again unfortunately

He should give it one more go...with a fresh start and some new ideas.

We have to get one if we keep trying and improving. Sound rubbish but it might happen. We are St Kilda lets have some optimism.

Ha! I am generally a pretty optimistic, resilient person.

What following the Saints has done is forced me to temper it with a good healthy dose of realism, a teaspoon of scepticism and a pinch of resignation!

Our problem isn’t that we need midfielders. Our problem is that we need *high quality* midfielders. We’re already stacked with a number of solid or solid-good midfielders, with no real standouts (could argue Gresham and Steven count, but the former is still young and the latter is up in the air).

The priority should absolutely be to obtain an elite midfielder via FA. Not only because we get an elite midfielder, but also because it “unlocks” trade value in existing players.

For example, imagine an off-season where we snag a Coniglio-type via FA, and Steven requests a trade. We lost a midfield rotation, filled it with Coniglio (an upgrade; sorry Jack) and then have our 1st pick, the Steven pick (which should be decent enough) with no midfield rotation spots left. This then means we can look to bundle one/both of those picks with a Ross type in order to get another elite midfielder alongside the FA.

Highly unlikely to happen, but it’s that kind of chain of events which could really turn things around (especially once Carlisle and Lonie are back, the possible impacts of Hannebery, Bytel, and King, etc).
Of course - that’s why any free agent gun to another club is one step further back for us . Maybe reducing the min salary cap spend and allowing teams to keep banking it is the only fair way . Then we eventually end up with s star

Paddy is worth nothing because of injuries. Still think he never plays again. Sounds to bad after such a soft knock.

Steven May leave. I’d have it right at 50|50 at the moment.

The way I see it , we have a solid team, in need of just a bit of top end talent. Depth is remarkable after what we've had in the past. ( much to White's disgust ).

Backline. I'm happy with it. Especially with Carlisle back in.
Midfield. I'd have said we are short a gun. With Steven gone, make that 2. Hannebery coming in will help.
Forward Line.. Bringing in King alongside Bruce and Membrey should transform it. (i'm far more optimistic than i ever was with Paddy. )
Plenty of room for improvement with the likes of Lonie, Young, Long, and Parker.
Ruck : Crap depth, but happy with Marshall's progress.

Developing.
We've got one of the youngest playing groups, so IN GENERAL, we should expect some improvement.

Clark - I view him not so much as a midfield Bull, more a Dal Santo type player. He'll get there.
Paton - Is a defender, but is he limited to that?
Bytel - I hope to hell his back problems are over.
Langlands - was a rookie pick, but those who see him in the VFL say he has plenty of potential.
Coffield - will probably be good, but meanwhile we have the odd HBF , so he'll need to demand a spot.

Not overly excited about the trade/free agents this year. We need to nail our first round pick for a gun mid.

Yeah i've mentally moved on. If he somehow comes back and has a great career, i'll call it a miracle .

WCE and Tigers didn't look like premiers before making huge strides so there is hope, definitely need depth and top end though. It would be great to get a Coniglio and a gun kid in the draft. It would fast track where we are at.

I reckon we have as much hope of getting coniglio as getting kelly. I reckon we chase the next best now. Second level players and he we get the elite in the draft.

agree with this. we are in money ball territory until the wheel turns.

eDPS has his first mock draft out. Plenty of water to go under the bridge, but at this stage Stephen's looks like a great fit for us
