I hate the way modern sides pick a guy that can play 7 positions at an adequate level instead of a gun in one position. To me he's always been mostly a loose defender who runs around on a flank, that one position we really don't have too many holes.
I agree Gring. Not really sure what Tomlinson brings to our side that someone can’t do, or we can’t develop someone to do. For me he’s a very meh player and we’ve got enough of them.

A future second is about right I think. When you think of the player we have secured with end of first round and early seconds (Dunstan, acres,Dmac,Goddard, long) it would be a good outcome for the club.
Papley would be better than all those you listed i would say at a guess ,

The substance abuse in here today is out of control

Not sure if you have watched him this year but would nearly be leading their B and F. Forget this future second stuff. Means nothing. He is much close to 19 than 36. We still need mids and anyway his whole family are swans and he seems happy there. Maybe we chase blokes he aren't happy. Certainly we chase mids who can play elsewhere not players who can have a turn as a mid.

There has been plenty of talk about him coming to Melbourne next year. That's the point, I've watched him specifically because we were mentioned as being in to him. Against WC (27 possessions and 5 goals 2) he looked like a superstar, but he still has 8 possession no goal games. He's all over the shop. https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/T/Tom_Papley.html

Last year we selected Bytel close to the end of second round.
Jury out on Clavarino , but Paton a good 3rd rounder 2018.
Battle at the end of round 2 the previous year.

I think its been pretty much agreed upon by most that our drafting was rubbish back in the Dunstan, Acres, Goddard days.
The draft is a lottery. You can save your money and buy a house, but then you'll never win the Mansion.
Not saying don't do it, but you can't just selectively pick spuds and say that draft picks never win.

People said the same thing about Blake. In the end he was integral to those back to back grand final sides. A superstar team is better than a team of superstars.

But we really have no need for him. Blake was a good battler but if we'd had a superstar player instead we probably would have won. Just don't see the point in Thomlinson as far as needing anything but defenders.

Papley is an interesting one both his granddads played for south Melbourne so there is an emotional attachment there.

He does have very close and still holds those ties to his local club bunyip his family are royalty there. If he were to move home I believe the clubs would be st.kilda, hawthorn and Melbourne as they have ties to the eastern suburbs. Is he really the kind of player we desperately covert though.

I think he's worth more than a future second. He's a quality footballer amd hes only just hitting his straps.

Would you pay a first for him? I wouldn't, he's potentially a gun but he's very uneven in his output. a pick in the early to mid 20s seems about right to get him, anything over that and he could just end up adding to our pool of GOPs.

Havent heard about him coming to Melbourne. His family are all mad Sydney. His grandfather was a very good player. Was it from a site like this or actually in the media? And he is a small forward so obviously he has bad games. Anyway my point stands. We need to stop saying second or first round pick. That could be one position difference or 35 positions difference.

Exactly he is the kind of person that the legacy of playing where his family did means a lot to him

He's like a slightly better Jack Lonie, I'd rather persist with Lones and get mids.

Sier is the player we should be going after.

Depends on cost. The Pies and Essendon are dicks when it comes to trades. If they want a first round pick then I'd rather take it to the draft.

Coniglio is under rated, he's more of a hard worker than the others, Kelly and Whitfield are elite runners but are more outside, most of our mids are very outside already. Coniglio wins his own ball and suits us more, Taranto won't be going anywhere, his young enough to want to make a name and expect less money. Cogs is also older and more experienced, has more leadership qualities and is a free agent, he's the first I'd be looking at.
He's the first you'd be looking at because he's the only one available with a (very minuscule) chance of coming to the Saints

If Kelly or Taranto were available anyone with half a brain would take them over cogs 10 times out of 10

Good mates with paps being a local boy. I'll get in his ear

Yeah, it's a bit of not wasting our time but he also suits needs best too. Guys like Kelly and Whitfield would need a ball winner to feed them, they'd look a lot worse at the Saints where they were minded as our best player. Cogs is a good replacement for Stuv, he gets his own ball but spreads well too. He's coal face but can run and carry. He's tough enough to take the pounding he'd get as our best player too.
Taranto is just one of those guys that hasn't even hit his straps yet, he's going to be something special, he will get locked away.

I somewhat agree

Kelly doesn't need anything though. He'd just be an all round jet in any team. With a in and under player or not. He can do it all.

I think he's a fair way ahead of Lonie to be honest. Yes he's an inconsistent 22 year old, but he's a proven match winner.

I wouldn't give up our first rounder no, but our first round pick will likely end up being between 6-10.

Our club has finally got there act together , brought in coaches , players and management to improve the club and now going after a true class midfielder that we need is part of the jigsaw we need to get to a flag , Cogs being a Free agent would be the dream recruit allowing us to keep our first round draft pick to secure another topline midfielder (Sier , Langdon , Jones etc)

There is a lot of water to go under the bridge before we get his signature but we are now in a position to grab a star like Coniglio and the guy can take heart in how the club has taken care of Hannebery not attempting to rush him back into the team before being ready and not putting pressure on Steven to get back to the club and not leaking why he can't play or not writing off McCartin where many clubs would of cast him off already , which is just class.
The same goes with Roberton.

Also knowing we have one of the youngest squads in the AFL all goes well for us going forward.
With improvement in our squad and getting back our injury riddled players we will be a top 4 side.
Just getting Hannebery , Carlisle , Coniglio , Steven back into this side is huge with Marshall , Billings , Gresham , Ross , Membery , Battle , King who are or will be A graders.

And Jack Lonie is an inconsistent 22 year old, with low quality forward line entries.
