IF we got a player like Coniglo as a free agent, we'd get nothing at all for compo if Newnes left.

I'd rather keep him but I'd be too excited to remember him.

Your going to blow a valve the way your going Premo , I hope your right but personally i see us as a million to one of him coming to us atm , yes its a lot of money supposedly being offered but why would he want to leave a team thats going to be in the finals for the next god knows how many years and come to a team that may not even make finals in the next two years let alone contend for a flag . I just cant see it happening

I'd be all up in Bonar and Sier..

Two moneyballers who would ins instantly improve our side
We’d probably be able to sier your bonar from a mile away [emoji6]

Why give a first for two players that have done literally nothing? Sounds SOS-like.
Cos the young talent won’t be that great at pick 18.

Because I liked Caldwell in his draft year and because I don’t follow how they are progressing and I’ve got no clue about this coming draft and I’ve zero experience in list management. I’ve got a lot in common with SOS actually..... so yeah. I see you’re point

EDIT: Maybe a second back?

500k to play at sandy just in case we get an injury. That’s no good for us or him. There are clubs who need a first ruck. I don’t think we are one of them.

If we get Goldy, he will spend the year at Sandy.

If we Don't get him (or another decent backup), Marshall will pop an ACL in JLT1.

Fact.

That's like saying why use a first rounder on an 18 year old draftee that has done nothing.

Caldwell isn't even half way through his first year. He was most likely playing round one if not for injury.

Bonar is another first rounder that just can't quite break into a gun midfield.

My only concern would he their fitness. Especially Caldwell's.

I actually rate Webster that highly and think coff and white could easily play his role. He is a good competitor and decent kick but I would not say he often sets up great attacking moves off half back. 90% of his kicks are the switch kick.
Anyway just my opinion
IMO opinion Newnes is the type of player that could benefit from a change of scenery. I actually rate him as a player, but for me he is too comfortable. With a change of voice and training standards (or coach) IMO he likely goes back to being a very good player. But I am honestly not sure what happens if he stays with us. Assuming the compo we are offered is inside the top 25ish (and assuming he actually wants to go), I have no problem with letting him walk.

JWebb: F**K NOOOOOOOOOO. Not under any circumstances. With Robbo out, he is the only backman we have that can actually hit a target. Solid defensively too. Can we please not confuse having 10 mid / small backmen on the list, with having 10 good HBF options? Webb is a very very reliable AFL defender and is the length of Flemington straight in front of any of the other options we have …

Goes both ways. Im not Convinced he can do what he did on the weekend consistently. Also against quality opposition. Hes done it a handful of times in his career if that. So lets not overpaying another player whos done nothing to deserve it.

I’m not sure that your being convinced is relevant to his signing one way or another, however it’s more than likely he will just sign up until he becomes eligible for free agency.

Our club has finally got there act together , brought in coaches , players and management to improve the club and now going after a true class midfielder that we need is part of the jigsaw we need to get to a flag , Cogs being a Free agent would be the dream recruit allowing us to keep our first round draft pick to secure another topline midfielder (Sier , Langdon , Jones etc)

There is a lot of water to go under the bridge before we get his signature but we are now in a position to grab a star like Coniglio and the guy can take heart in how the club has taken care of Hannebery not attempting to rush him back into the team before being ready and not putting pressure on Steven to get back to the club and not leaking why he can't play or not writing off McCartin where many clubs would of cast him off already , which is just class.
The same goes with Roberton.

Also knowing we have one of the youngest squads in the AFL all goes well for us going forward.
With improvement in our squad and getting back our injury riddled players we will be a top 4 side.
Just getting Hannebery , Carlisle , Coniglio , Steven back into this side is huge with Marshall , Billings , Gresham , Ross , Membery , Battle , King who are or will be A graders.

To be any hope at all to pick up a star free agent we can not afford to crash and burn this season.
We have to show that we’re on an upward trajectory.

If Cogs signs with GWS, we will be in Whitfield’s ear about coming home a year early. Haven’t heard anything, but there’s a good reason Gubby is here.
Great another Half Back Flanker [emoji12]

IF we got a player like Coniglo as a free agent, we'd get nothing at all for compo if Newnes left.

The only reason newnes would have for leaving would be to go play for a ~ top 4 side contending for a flag.

If he were to do that, he'd need to take a big pay cut and be constantly 1 bad game away from playing state league footy.

Can't see him going anywhere- he's on a good wicket with us.

Which I'm fine with to be honest.

If our midfield consisted next year of fit hannebury, steele, steven and cogniglio (i know, long shot)... guys like newnes, ross etc would suddenly look fantastic because they'd be up against the oppositions B & C graders.

At the moment newnes and co get slaughtered each week up against the oppositions A graders.

Agree entirely. Could be a miss, might be a massive hit.

Not sure he wants to spend several years down the bottom half of the ladder either playing in front of small crowds

I’ve been skimming through this thread and everyone is mentioning us going after Goldstein.. why not Ryder? Also out of contract at seasons end, is the better player (imo), can play forward, and most importantly, isn’t a flog.
He was mentioned in the AFL.com article this morning about us showing interest. Problem is he isn't a FA. Definitely makes more sense than Goldstein though as you can play him predominantly forward.
